random notes
denny has covered a couple of zappa tunes on a title called spare parts.
(uae,uae disc 5)
denny walley performed on the last night of zappa's universe performing the
blues version of "bamboozled by love" (nov. 10,1991). he and his wife
"janet the planet" (yes from baby snakes movie) were seen at the night
of zappa music at lincoln center in feb. 1993 (i saw them, they were 3 seats
over from me). (source: my eyes & ears)
apparently denny runs a recording studio in the atlanta,
ga area - chamblee i think. a
neighbor of mine is moses mo of mothers finest and is in contact with denny once
in a while.
currently (april '95) denny is over in sweden on some captain beefheart reunion
tour or something.
i saw him live on stage at the fasching in stockholm, sweden on the 4th
of april 1995. he was playing slide guitar in a beefheart cover band (with the
swedish singer freddie wadling as beefheart). the two swedish zappa's universe
players, morgan agren and mats oberg, were also in the band. i know the band
rehearsed for one week and played two shows. it was an unbelievably good band,
and very, very popular.
denny is running mgm scenery works shop. not a recording studio. the
performance in sweden was a "tribute" that started up on the 1st of
april 1995 in umea combined with art-exhibition with a dozen of his paintings.
second concert was on april 2nd and third in stockholm april 4th. also in the
band were jimmy aagren on guitar and rolf hedqvist on bass. morgan will probably
release some of the stuff on a cd later this year.
check the mats & morgan homepage for more info.
peter öberg
(peterobe@vbtn.sr.se) sez:
guitarist denny walley played a show at the ume_ jazz festival in sweden on the
26th of october (1996). ex. zappa sideman walley had put together a band that
included drummer morgan +gren and keyboardist mats +berg (both ex. zappa's
universe) plus three other young musicians.
they performed rhythm&blues classics as mannish boy, i can't be satisfied,
diddy wah diddy...the last songs in the regular set were suicide chumpand
bamboozled by love, two zappa songs that denny used to sing when he was touring
with frank in the fall of '78.
the only encore was china pig performed by denny alone. (the original version of
this captain beefheart song appears on the trout mask replica album).
