NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK & BOGUS POMP

2007 10 24
Zappaween news

Hi gang,

Sorry to tell you but Napoleon is suffering from a flu bug and won't be able to perform at this year's Zappaween on Saturday. But the show will go on and Bogus Pomp will put on their typical great Zappaween performance.

Joining BP will be Pat Buffo who has been a guest singer for BP a number of times over the years.

Ticket prices will be reduced from $25 to $20.

Feel better Napi!

Fred

from: Napoleon Murphy Brock

Dear Jerry Outlaw, Fred Hemmer, Bogus Pomp, Bogus Pomp fans & Zappaween fans,

It is with great regret that I must withdraw from this year's planned Zappaween event.  I have been stricken with a virus, and it is not possible for me to perform at this time.

I was honored to have Bogus Pomp invite me to be a part of this year's show, and, in my opinion, Bogus Pomp is one of the best bands that I have had the privilege to perform with over the past seven years.

Please accept my deepest apology.  And I promise that, as soon as I am healthy again, I will return to Florida and do a show with Bogus Pomp that will knock your socks off.

Please enjoy your Zappaween celebration, and the music of Frank Zappa, performed by Bogus Pomp, some of the finest musicians that it is my honor to know and call my friends.

Respectfully,

Napoleon Murphy Brock

JOS STEEN AT ULTRA ECZEMA

Jos Steen's new album (vinyl !!)  on the Antwerp based Ultra Eczema label should be out.

JOS STEEN; music for tape and turntable lp
ultra eczema 48

"jos steen is a remarkable outsider in the purest possible sense of the word ! telling stories about the dude always sounds like they're untrue or seriously exaggerated, the way he lives sounds like a fairytale and the way he acts would resemble the heaviest mix of bukkowski and bobby colombo. jos lives in a tiny house underneath a radiotower of the national tv and radiostation "vrt", where he works as an audio librarian, the house is built on the highest point of the area in a forest, u can see it from miles and miles away, it's tiny but can be called a museum! it is full of selfmade instruments and broken piano's, amazing wooden string instruments made of garbage and all kinds of foreign instruments noone remembers the name off.
since around 1964 jos has been making poems, stories, paintings, collages, drawings and music/sound to kill the demons in his head or jam along to their forceful blues! some call him "the belgian beefheart" and the people that already forgot about beefheart talk about a local little howling wolf.
jos always made selfreleased zines, tapes and more recently mountains of cdr's of homemade blues, broken bottle experiments and heavy free music folk. this lp is a selection of tracks of a recent cdr of tape and recordplayer experiments spiced with vacummcleaners, rotting voices, undefinable strings, piano's etc.. it's absolutely unthinkable his work could be potentially lost in time and space, for fuck's sake, the dude is a genius!!!!!!
in the past jos played with free jazz greats like peter jacquemin, andré goudbeek, yvo van der borght, with poetry psychos like roland topor and freddy de vree, and with zappa's own jimmy carl black who begged on his bare knees to play with jos, well maybe thats exaggerated as well.."

2007/10/24, Zappa Plays Zappa performed at L.A.'s "Rockline" radio show. The broadcast included:
  1. Pygmy Twylyte
  2. Dupree's Paradise
  3. City Of Tiny Lites
  4. Willie The Pimp
  5. Dog Meat
  6. G-Spot Tornado

THE WRONG OBJECT IN CONCERT

I saw The Wrong Object in concert last Saturday. They played at "De Singer" in Rijkevorsel (Belgium), and had brought two special guests along: Alex Maguire (a British jazz pianist who has performed with Evan Parker & Elton Dean, a.o.), and Robin Verheyen (belgian jazz sax player who is one of the revelations of the European jazz scene).

The concert was great, and you should have been there.
Lucky for you (and for the rest of us), the concert got recorded by VPRO radio, and it will be broadcast on midnight, November 8, on Dutch Radio. More details will follow.

The set-list did not include any Zappa compositions. The band did perform a couple of new pieces, however, plus a fantastic version of Elton Dean's 'Seven For Lee'.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON BOOTZ ANYMORE

Dieter Jakob's vinyl bootleg bible has been delayed a little bit. The book was originally scheduled for release somewhere in October. It looks like it will be out somewhere in December, or maybe in January.

Remember, the book will be the most comprehensive work about the unofficial records of Frank Zappa. And as I told Dieter: "We Zappa fans are patient. We have to be...."

  • 100 handnumbered copies

  • 500 pages A4 (large format, about 8.2 by 11.7 inches), almost all pages full coloured.

  • Hardcover with thread sewing

  • Digitally printed on special high quality paper (paper used for illustrated books)

  • More than 3600 (!) photos from covers, label, vinyl (LPs and singles), booklets, other details, etc. about more than 300 different titles (vinyl only!)

  • 100 handnumbered copies

MUSIKFABRIK

I had mentioned this project earlier, but as new info has become available (like the band's name), I thought I'd add it once again:

A special event of Zappa music happened in Montreux on September 1st (2006 !!). It's the composer/arranger Ali N. Askin who had gathered a band to perform some of Frank's music. The band included special guests keyboardist Mats Öberg and drummer Morgan Ågren. Mats told that the band will perform Revised Music For Guitar And Low Budget Orchestra, Village Of The Sun, Echidna's Arf (Of You) and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?, plus stuff from Zappa In New York.

Gustaf Hielm, former member of Meshuggah played the bass.

The event included music by Zappa and Varèse, including some arrangements and transcriptions of Zappa's music by Ali N. Askin. In the early 1990's Askin was Zappa's assistant for the project The Yellow Shark with Ensemble Modern.

The Ensemble that performed along with the guest musicians, was called the "MusikFabrik".

2006/09/01 - 20:00 h concert Montreux, Salle del Castillo

MusikFabrik, feat. Morgan Ågren, Mats Öberg, David Lindvall

  • Edgard Varèse - Poème Electronique

  • Edgard Varèse - Dance for Burgess

  • Edgard Varèse - Ionisation

  • Edgard Varèse - Intégrales

  • Edgard Varèse - Densité

  • Frank Zappa - Beltway Bandits

  • Frank Zappa - None Of The Above

  • Frank Zappa - T'Mershi Duween

  • Frank Zappa - The Black Page

  • Frank Zappa - RDNZL

  • Frank Zappa - Big Swifty

  • Frank Zappa - Revised Music

-- thanks (again) to HH for the newsflash & the extra info --

Has anyone seen or heard a recording of this project? I'd sure like to hear it, and I'm not the only one...

AND....ALSO....BUT....

Hey kids, are ya like me? Do ya love the Project/Object? I have put together a 9-CD compilation of the 2002 tours to make available for trade. This was arguably the greatest unit I have had the pleasure to share the stage with. Since I'm the arguing type, I continually strive to put forth a better argument. :^) The band included Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock with guests Mike Keneally, Bunk Gardner, Chris Opperman, Candy Zappa, Arthur Barrow, Bob & Thana Harris, Ed Palermo, Chuck Garvey to name a few. Andre Cholmondeley, Jordan Shapiro, Seahag, Dave Johnsen & yours truly rounded out the back-up. Drop me a line at gleonard9 at earthlink dot net if you'd like to trade for them.

A MAGAZINE FROM 25 YEARS AGO

Here's another magazine cover from almost 25 years ago. It has been added to the Frank Zappa Magazines section:

hotwacks quarterly no°13
    (1983, magazine, usa)

  • Issue number 13 of Hotwacks Quarterly included the second part of R.C.'s article on the Mud Shark label
    • "The Mudshark Anthology - part two" by R.C. - 5 pages

ZAPPA BOOK FROM 1994

Here's another addition to the Frank Zappa Books section:

die frank zappa story

by michael gray

(1994, book, ger, vgs)

    hardback

= german translation of "mother! the frank zappa story", originally published in 1993.

NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK

  • napoleon murphy brock featuring gregarious movement: after frank - 1st movement
        (2007, cd, usa, crossfire publications)
    • In 1976, after his time with Zappa, Napoleon Murphy Brock teamed up with some of his old friends. Together with keyboard player Cliffor Coulter and drummer Billy Ingram he formed Gregarious Movement. In 1977 they were joined by Thomas Reed on guitar.
"After Frank - 1st Movement" catches the band in 1977, live in concert at the 'C'est Bonne" club in Santa Cruz. The album presents five tracks. All of the songs are coverversions: three from the Ohio Players, one from Al Green, and the last one from The Five Stairsteps.

Now, this will be hard to believe, but Napoleon only sings lead on one track (Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together'). The majority of the songs have Billy Ingram on lead vocals, and he sure has a great voice. Even more suprising is that the three voices sound quite alike and that they blend together perfectly. This does mean that we have a lot of Napoleon's sax during the show, and his playing is fluent as ever. With a voice like that, one might tend to forget that Napoleon Murphy Brock is a superb saxophone player as well.

Gregarious Movement knows its classics and puts down a hell of a performance. This is top-shelf soul/funk/jazz or whatever you would like to call it.

"After Frank - 1st Movement" is a must-have for every Napoleon Murphy Brock fan.
    • Higly recommended !!

ZAPPAWEEN XII

ZAPPAWEEN XII

  • 2007/10/27 Bogus Pomp - concert "Zappaween 12", 'The State Theater, St.Petersburg, FL, usa

There is no BP USF conflict on Zappaween

Several have written whether the South Florida game will be on TV at the State Theater 10/27. The game that day is on ABC at 3:30 so no worry about missing it. Hopefully, we will all be at Zappaween celebrating a SF victory.

While not confirmed, it has been reported that the USF game was moved to accommodate the Bogus Pomp fans.

DOOT! 2007 09 14 (2)

2007 09 14

[DOOT] DOOT!Tales, Told to an Idiot, Full of Sound and Fury...

We bring you this extra-special All-Idiot UP!DOOT:
Earlier this year DOOT! agreed to participate in Andrew Greenaway's "20 Extraordinary Renditions" project, a compilation of interpretations of the Zappa composition "The Idiot Bastard Son".
You might know Andrew as "The Idiot Bastard", or maybe you don't... but you should. DOOT! teamed up with our good friend, Annemarieke Blondel-Schoonderwaldt (aka Ke), a very talented viola player from Saxony, and put together a decidedly un-rock rendition of this classic composition. DOOT! will be releasing a bonus track soon, but
you will have to wait for the actual release to hear our contribution to this critically important and socially redeeming document. See the details here: http://idiotbastard.bravehost.com/20xIBS.htm and see his whole website here: http://idiotbastard.bravehost.com/

But Wait! There's More!

Andrew dug up the audio from our lengthy IBS interview at Zappanale 17 in 2006. Andrew, Canadian John, and Uncle Ian set forth to interview the DOOTs: Pete Brunelli, Stephen Chillemi, and Andre Cholmondeley, after our performance on Sunday morning at Zappanale 17. As hard as we tried to forget the whole incident, Andrew has found the audio and put it up on his website for all to hear. Yep, it kinda rambles, and you can hear us move locations twice: once for noise; and once because we set the recorder down on a underground wasp's nest! Yes, really. We ramble on about many topics including some historical background on DOOT!, various Zappa-opinioneering, and some tales of our musical background. See the page and hear the audio here: http://www.davemcmann.com/ibsdoot.html We especially love the output of the voice-to-text program... I think that really gets to the core of what we were trying to say.

Andrew has been a great friend of DOOT! and we owe him Nothing! NOTHING! Well.. we owe him thanks for taking the time to cover our merry little band of space-music weirdos in any way at all when he could be spending his time in a myriad of other ways. He could be playing far out jazz with Blood, Sweat, and Tears... He could be reinventing the Buffalo Chicken Wing with canadian John and getting rich in the process... He could be finding a cure for Kraut Rock! it is a DOOT! burden that we have sidetracked him from more important work.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled de-programming.

[DOOT] DOOT!NOOTS from the Krypt!

Heya Dootarinos!

It has been a while since we dropped any email on ya, so grab a tasty beverage and check this one out.

Zappanale!

In August, DOOT! made the pilgrimage to Zappanale 18 in Bad Doberan, Germany. Pete was able to bunk with a big bunch of Zappateers http://zappateers.com/ at their top secret bungalow. The highlights included having to get some German/Austrian muscle down there to hash out the cash and toilet paper situation with the fiercely alcoholic landlady, late night exposure to Jenever and smoked reindeer, a merciful delivery of Brugge Tripel, English morning tea (no crumpets, sorry to say) and relatively easy access to the festival grounds.
Stephen and MaryJayne took one for the team, working the Arf-shop merchandise concession for the whole three days. But it didn't stop there. Stephen made Zappanale go bonkers when he performed "Electricity" with our local buddies Kimono Draggin. It was great to see so many familiar faces and watch our hometown band Kimono Draggin, featuring Joey "Delicious" Nolan (our bandmate in Doctor Dark) just rocking the balls off of the Zappanale crowd. As hard as it is to win over a festival crowd with original material, KD succeeded in getting them rocking. Way to go Draggins!

See the DOOT!BLOG for a day by day rundown, photos, and links - http://chollyhoss.blogspot.com/
Check out some vids on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/brooonelly and if you search YouYube for "zappanale" there are some other great Zappanale 18 videos. I have a few linked in my YouTube favorites.

DOOT! Website Update:

DOOT! has added a Merch/Downloads page with info on getting your very own DOOT! T-Shirt, and downloads of free-as-in-beer DOOT! recordings.

http://chollyhoss.com/doot/merch.html

We plan to be adding several full length DOOT! performances to the page in the near future, and there should be additional merch options in the upcoming weeks. We will be setting up a PayPal button for purchasing T-Shirts, but until then just drop us an email and we will hook you up with the particulars. The deal is T-Shirt and a CD (a surprise pick from our vaults), shipped, for $20 in the USA, and E20 shipped to Yurrip.

Speaking of merch: A big shout-out to French DOOT!FAN Emmanuel Girard, who snagged a DOOT! T-shirt/CD/BonusCD combo pack! Thanks for the support, Big-E!

While we will have a newly minted DOOT! recording available on the website soon (More free downloads! Yipeeeeee!!!), we do not have any live performances planned at this time. Be sure that this will change and w are hoping to have at least one gig on the calendar before the end of the year.

The show will always go on!! Frank asked for fans to PLAY HIS MUSIC and ...we will do our small part.

Oh - and I can't resist a Politics Minute:
(to those of you in the USA)....The US Congress just wasted your TIME and TAX DOLLARS when they VOTED ON AN AD!!!.
Whatever your thoughts on moveon.org - doesn't matter. I'm certain you don't want the congress -- in these times - officially condemning FREE AMERICAN SPEECH.

Here's how these fools wasted (y)our time:
Both branches of Congress approved a resolution to condemn moveon.org's newspaper ad that was titled "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"
the House of Representatives voted 341-79 (420 voted, braah, out of 435)
the Senate voted 72-25. (97 voted out of 100)
These JERKS miss votes, stay home or whatever for REALLY IMPORTANT votes.....and for this nonsense they show up!! What a farce.

Here's the cover of the Sting "The Art Of The Heart" bootleg. It includes Sting's version of Zappa's "The Idiot Bastard Son".

THE KENEALLIST 2007 10 10

A message from Mike:

Euro-gigs, Dëthkløk tour and downloads debut!

Oh hey! I thought that was you, but I wasn't sure at first, but now in this light it's a lot easier to tell. You look good. Hi, you. Whaddup?

Flying to Budapest in the morning, I've never been there before. I'm going to get down on my knees in the dirt and kiss it like it's Lester Bangs' sister. Hello, Budapest! I'm going to play with Ed Mann for the first time in almost 20 years, which is stunningly delightful to me, and with a large ensemble of ingenious Hungarian musicians called the Modern Art Orchestra, playing a bunch of new Tom Trapp arrangements of Frank Zappa music. We're doing a lot of material from Burnt Weeny Sandwich which makes me freakin' happy because that album doesn't get the spotlight like it ought to. And hey, a couple of weeks ago I heard Weasels Ripped My Flesh again and possibly enjoyed it more than I ever have before. It's so utterly shameless and snotty. I love it. Listening to "Eric Dolphy's Memorial Barbecue" I noticed (at 2:13 on the CD version) the drums do a little (sounds improvised) rhythmic figure that is identical to the opening phrase of "Black Page #1." Maybe that little nanosecond of percussion adlib lodged in an occult section of Frank's memory bank gestating for years later to be aborned as the opening salvo in his percussion meisterwork. Or maybe not but it's fun to imagine. Hey, did you also notice that at 3:47 of "Cruisin' For Burgers" on the CD version of Zappa In New York, during the guitar solo, that Frank messes around for awhile with what would later become the opening phrase of "Mo and Herb's Vacation"? You did know that? You knew about the "Eric Dolphy" thing too? You don't have to be so smug about it! Stop laughing at me!

Then, I'm going to Sweden for the IB Expo '07, a remarkable festival hosted every year by a brilliant musical group called Isildurs Bane, wherein they invite musicians they enjoy from around the globe (the big one, not the one on the desk in your den) to collaborate on music for a few days of rehearsal and then present the fruits of their labor in concert. (Microsoft Word thinks that last sentence was too long. Eat it, Microsoft Word!) I'm bringing some pieces from The Universe Will Provide to use as fodder (thank you Chris Opperman for, ahem, providing many necessary materials to allow this to occur!) and will write some new stuff with the gang as well. I mean, damn! They've invited a thereminist to perform! You think I DON'T to hear my guitar and a theremin do something in unison? How wrong can you be? Sure makes you look silly after all your gloating about the "Eric Dolphy" and "Mo and Herb's Vacation" action doesn't it! Well, life is for learning.

Still, you look really good in this light.

Then I get to go home for ONE DAY and see my girlfriend (who restrung my guitar today!) and daughter (who identified "Numbered Days" from Half Zaftig's Life Like Luster album is being in 7/4 a couple of days ago!) before going to LA for four days of DETHKLOK rehearsals before the tour. (The episode of Metalocalypse which premiered last night has me doing a couple of voices again-- the guy who gets his head crushed in the opening scene, and the kid who gets kidnapped for illegally downloading DETHKLOK mp3s. I think I was funnier in this episode than in the first one I did voices for. In the first one I thought my voices were Komedy Killer, baby, and not in the good way. Brendon was kind though. Too kind. He was over here for nine hours yesterday teaching me DETHKLOK songs. The sh*t is not easy. Oh, there have been some people talking sh*t about me on some metal message boards in connection with the DETHKLOK tour. Hey, bite me, haters, nice to meet you!) Anyway, you can find the itinerary of the tour elsewhere in this beautiful thing you're looking at.

Me and Sarah ordered us the full-on discbox of Radiohead's new album tout suite, baby. Hell yeah we did.

But if you love downloads, like I love downloads, check out the exciting premiere of these downloads at keneally.com: the three bonus CDs (Wooden Smoke Asleep, Dancing With Myself and Nonkertalk), from Exowax's three out-of-print Special Editions, are now ready to be fed to your computer, and then to your ears, like nobody's business. All available as zip files of non-DRM hi-res (256k+) mp3s, compatible with all mp3 players. $10 each. This makes me pretty wiggly with happiness, especially in the case of Wooden Smoke Asleep which I think is a really, really nice record. But hey, they're all really nice! Don't let me stop you from buying all three! In any case I'm glad we're finally making some downloads available for you and I'm sure we'll be using the technology in all kinds of evilly fascinating ways as time continues, inexorably, on.

This is all I have to say!

I love you.

Mike

ANDRE CHOLMONDELEY 2007 10 10

hello one more time today folks....

Just wanted to alert you -- the various Zappa alumni remain VERY busy -- BTW -- in the middle of the DON PRESTON tour, we took him to see STEVE VAI... what an amazing show, amazing night, and special time as Don and Steve spoke for a while after the show.

Well - here is info on some great new CDs --from publisher/independent CD producer/engineer --GREG RUSSO -- author of the great Zappa book COSMIK DEBRIS. He aLso has done excellent books on Jethro Tull, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds and more!

PS - the first CD he mentions NEONFIRE, is a power-pop project --features Candy Zappa, Napoleon Murphy Brock and yours truly Andre' Cholmondeley on all guitars.......also not listed is the new NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK cd..which we will have for sale on this tour.

...

Hi, I’m Greg Russo, owner of Crossfire Publications.  In addition to the FZ book that I wrote and published, “Cosmik Debris,” my company has recently released CDs by many former members of Zappa’s bands as well as artists that worked with Frank in the studio.  There are lots more on the way.  Here is a list of what we have available so far, along with links to CD Baby and iTunes for people that would like to listen and/or download tracks:

NEONFIRE – Neonfire
http://cdbaby.com/cd/neonfire

THE TORNADOES – Now And Then
http://cdbaby.com/cd/tornadoesmusic

THE TORNADOES – Charge Of The Tornadoes
http://cdbaby.com/cd/tornadoesmusic2

JIMMY CARL BLACK – When Do We Get Paid?
http://cdbaby.com/cd/jimmycarlblack

DON PRESTON – Vile Foamy Ectoplasm
http://cdbaby.com/cd/prestondon

BUNK GARDNER – It’s All Bunk!
http://cdbaby.com/cd/bunkgardner

DON PRESTON – Works
http://cdbaby.com/cd/prestondon2

JIMMY CARL BLACK – Where’s The $%&§#@' Beer?
http://cdbaby.com/cd/jimmycarlblack2

All of our CDs and books are also available on Project/Object’s tour, and at http://www.crossfirepublications.com, http://www.tarniusmusic.com and http://www.amazon.com.

All of these CDs can be heard on Rhapsody, Napster and dozens of other sites.
A few more CDs are in progress right now:

  • a reissue of Bob Harris’ 1986 album “The Great Nostalgia” with lots of bonus tracks,
  • Napoleon Murphy Brock’s “After Frank – 1st Movement” (a 1977 live show with his group Gregarious Movement)
  • and two different Grandmothers compilations – one with older recordings, and one with recordings by the current lineup.

Currently, I’m finalizing the publishing and master agreements to release the recordings made at PAL Studios – the studio that owner Paul Buff sold to Frank Zappa in 1964.  Once Zappa bought the studio, it became known as Studio Z.  There will be a series of at least 7 CDs of PAL recordings taken from master tapes and acetates, and there are over a half dozen UNRELEASED tracks with Zappa.  I expect to release the first volume in the series in time for the holidays.  These CDs reveal how Paul Buff, and a little later on, Frank Zappa, created their earliest works.  All of these recordings are very rare and expensive if you can find them, but they will all be made available through this series at a fraction of the cost.
In the next few months and into early 2008, we also plan to release Don Preston’s “Retrospective,” Napoleon Murphy Brock’s “Before Frank” and “After Frank – 2nd Movement,” Jimmy Carl Black’s “Brown, Black & Blue” (with Arthur Brown), “Can I Borrow A Couple Of Bucks Until The End Of The Week?” and “If We’d Only Been Living In California…,” Candy Zappa’s “My Brother Was A Mother” and both of Nolan Porter’s albums: “No Apologies” and “Nolan.” Thanks for supporting REAL music played by REAL people! GR

ZAPPATEERS FESTIVAL IN MARCH 2008

and now, the newsflash from a little while ago, but this time with the extra bonus flyer...

Zappa(teers) festival in Holland!!!

Following on from the success of the Zappateer weekend in England earlier this year,
the Zappateers are following up with the third Zappateer weekend for of the 14th and 15th March 2008, in a tranquil forest location near the historic Dutch city of Nijmegen close to the German border.

Promising to be bigger and even better than last time, Audrey one of the festival organisers said;
Everyone had such a great time at Bradford we just couldn't resist doing another one. This time we're holding it in mainland Europe to make it as accessible as possible for Zappateers and Zappa fans from all over Europe to attend. We've even managed to select a venue which includes accommodation so people don't have the expense or struggle to find accommodation themselves and which also means the partying can continue all weekend”.

Audrey was even more excited when talking about the line-up for the weekend.
We're really excited about this year's acts, we've so far confirmed 5 great bands, have another amazing band in the process of confirming and have possibly 2 or even 3 more bands in the pipeline, I really think people are going to be in for a dynamite show”.

The bands confirmed so far are:

    Wrong Object,
those accomplished purveyors of psychedelic jazz with modern rock sensibilities and downright great musicians are a real coup for the festival and promise to be a real highlight of the weekend.

    Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo,
Known as the Dutch masters, veterans of Zappanale, and all round great guys, Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo are doing their best to keep the music of Zappa alive by lovingly recreating his fabulous work live. Do not miss.

    The Foolz,
veterans of the Zappa scene and great friends of the Zappateers always entertain whenever they're let loose on their instruments and on their native soil will excel themselves.

    Monty and the Butchers,
those young English dudes fresh from their fabulous début performance at Zappanale and their brilliant show at Bradford on Avon offer a high octane mix of Zappa and their own funky compositions.

    Blurp,
a Dutch band will Freak everyone out with some early Zappa complete with zany and crazy stage antics reminiscent of Zappa's Garrick theatre days.
As for the previous Zappateer Festivals, a small scale intimate weekend is the aim, meaning tickets will be limited to a maximum of 150, which if the success of the Bradford on Avon weekend is repeated are expected to sell quickly.
The tickets are priced at 80 EUR which includes indoor festival accommodation meaning you can leave your tents at home, just bring a sleeping bag, pillow case, sheet and dancing shoes.

THE RESIDENTS' THE VOICE OF MIDNIGHT

  • the residents: the voice of midnight
        (2007, cd, uk, mute)
    • SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE November 6, 2007
    • The Residents have a long history of story-based music projects, starting with 1974's Not Available, continuing with God in 3 Persons in 1988, and more recently The River of Crime in 2006. With The Voice of Midnight, The Residents have now taken a bold step, crossing a line into the world of music theater. They have adapted a short story, Der Sandmann, by Prussian writer E.T.A. Hoffman, first published 190 years ago.

  • On the surface, Der Sandmann is a simple story of madness. However, it has been recognized as addressing the conflict between the age of reason and the romantic era by scholars who have studied the tale.

The protagonist of the story, Nathaniel, carries a deeply-seated fear that the childhood fable character, the sandman, is stalking him. The character of Nate is superbly performed by Corey Rosen who first worked with The Residents on River of Crime in 2006. Nate's fiance, Clair, a steadfast realist, is performed by Gerri Lawler who also worked on River of Crime as well as Tweedles. Long time Residents collaborator Carla Fabrizio performs the role of the other "woman," Olympia. The Residents embody the other characters, and perform the music, assisted by soloist Nolan Cook, whose guitar work for the band over the last eight years is legendary.

QUI

  • qui: love's miracle
(2007, cd, usa, ipecac ipc 93)
    • Qui (pronounced Qwee) was founded in 2000 by drummer/vocalist Paul Christensen and guitarist/vocalist Matt Cronk in Los Angeles, CA.
They debuted in LA in early 2001 and released their first full-length CD, “Baby Kisses,” (Heart of a Champion) in 2003. The band's music is described as "an idiosyncratic blend of punk, noise, metal and experimental genres, coupled with advanced musical prowess".

In late 2006, Qui was joined by vocalist David Yow of The Jesus Lizard / Scratch Acid fame. The band released an album called "Love's Miracle" in 2007, that included their version of Frank Zappa's 'Willie The Pimp'.

THE WRONG OBJECT

Word just reached us that the Lol Coxhill / Alex Maguire / The Wrong Object project that was scheduled to take place later this month at the Singer Jazzclub in Rijkevorsel (Belgium), won't be happening.

Lol is too ill to participate.

The good news is that the concert will go through, and that Robin Verheyen will be teaming up with The Wrong Object.

  • 2007/10/27  - concert 'De Singer', Rijkevorsel, Belgium

STEVE VAI

  • steve vai: visual sound theories: live with the holland metropole orkest
        (2007, dvd, usa, epic / red ink 88697 06155 9)
    • Steve Vai performed his pieces with the dutch Metropole Orkest in 2005. It was a fabulous performance: beautiful arrangements, a top band, and Steve Vai in great shape.

If I'm not mistaken, this recording got broadcast on dutch TV on 2005. Anyway, now it's available on DVD in all its splendor.

A must-have for any guitar freak.

CHRIS SPEDDING

  • chris spedding: click clack
(2005, cd, ger, spv recordings spv 78052 cd)
    • English guitarist Chris Spedding has worked with a lot of great names in rock history. In 2005, he not only recorded Captain Beefheart's 'Click Clack', he also used it for the album's title.
It's a very clean version, and he does a great job on one of my favourite Van Vliet compositions.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA

  • zappa plays zappa: zappa plays zappa
        (2007, 2dvd, eu, strobosonic strobo-d-100)
    • Yes, it's finally out !!!

      The Zappa plays Zappa DVD.

Dweezil Zappa, Joe Travers, Pete Griffin, Jamie W.Kime, Aaron Arntz, Scheila Gonzales and Billy Hulting, plus Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and the incredible Napoleon Murphy Brock.

If you saw the band last year, you'll probably buy this, as you know that it's good. If you weren't able to catch the band in 2006, here's the opportunity to find out what Zappa plays Zappa sounded like with Napoleon, Steve and Terry in their ranks.

      Love it.

BUNK GARDNER

I added info for two essential albums in the Bunk Gardner discography. Both are from 1972. Number one is the famous Domenic Troiano album. This LP also features Buzz Gardner and Tjay Contrelli. The second one is the very rare "Cold Cuts" album by Nicholas Greenwood (of Crazy World of Arthur Brown fame). Fortunately, the Greenwood album got reissued a couple of years ago, both on vinyl and on CD.

AMOUGIES

"Just mention the word Amougies, and fans of Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa will immediately know what you are talking about. This was going to be the first ever rock festival in France. Europe's answer to Woodstock. It was originally going to take place in or near Paris, but French authorities forbid it and the marquee was eventually set up a few miles outside the French border, on Belgian soil and held at Mont de I'Enclus in Amougies in the Tournai municipality. The Actuel festival was organized by the publication of the same name in collaboration with the BYG record label. It took place over 5 nights, entertaining an audience of 15-20,000 to a unique mixture of progressive pop, free jazz and contemporary music including Pink Floyd, Ten Years After, Colosseum, Aynsley Dunbar, Freedom, Keith Relf's Renaissance, Alexis Korner, Don Cherry, Nice, Caravan, Blossom Toes, Archie Shepp, Yes, Pretty Things, Chicken Shack, Sam Apple Pie, Pharoah Sanders, Soft Machine, Captain Beefheart, East Of Eden, Fat Mattress, and many more. Frank Zappa was present at the festival in a twofold capacity. First, as Captain Beefheart's road manager; secondly, as M.C., assisting Pierre Lattes, a famous radio/TV presenter at the time (and the pop music editor for Actuel magazine). The latter task proved problematic given Zappa's limited French, the prevailing language among the audience, who themselves didn't seem to understand much English. Instead, Zappa relinquished his M.C. job for one of occasional guest guitarist. He plays with almost everybody, especially with Pink Floyd, Blossom Toes, Archie Shepp and Aynsley Dunbar, a fabulous drummer he will hire shortly thereafter. He introduces his friend Captain Beefheart and provides a powerful stimulant to all the other musicians. Most legendary, of course, is Frank Zappa's jam with Pink Floyd on a very extended "Interstellar Overdrive". The festival was filmed by Jerome Laperrousaz, and the film was to be called MUSIC POWER. Due to objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn't been properly secured, the film was never officially released."

BOGUS POMP UPDATE

2007 08 06, Fred wrote:

We can finally confirm Napoleon will perform with Bogus Pomp on October 27 at Zappaween. As those of you who have seen Napi with BP in the past will agree, he is an outstanding performer and is perfect for the Zappaween style show. The show will be at The State Theater and I will do my best to try to secure priority seating for those who sign up for the sponsorship offer in connection with the Gulfport show.

I saw the Zappa Plays Zappa show 4 times last year and Napoleon was the clear star of that tour. We are lucky to have him back with Bogus Pomp again.

More details to come.

Project/Object With Napoleon Murphy Brock Performing
The Music of Frank Zappa Announces Fall Tour 2007

Hot Off 2006 ZPZ Tour Legendary Zappa Frontman Napoleon Murphy Brock Prepares to Amaze Audiences Once Again

2007/09/08 (New York, NY) Project/Object, the acclaimed and internationally known Frank Zappa repertoire band, is back with its "Fall Surge for Zappa Music" tour, October 10 thru 24, 2007. With former Zappa vocalist/saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock as the focal point of this particular installment of Project/Object, longtime fans can expect a unique and fresh lineup from the seasoned touring band - highlighting not only material from Brock's albums and tours with Zappa that started in 1974 - but also many tracks people have not heard him sing before. Napoleon's soulful vocals, and "exotic dancing" as Frank used to call it -- will help make Project/Object's fall tour a phenomenon. Brock is fresh off his lengthy stint as lead vocalist for Dweezil Zappa's ZPZ tour, and with Project/Object he just played the highlight set to record attendance at the annual Zappanale festival in Germany in August 2007.

Project/Object has reached a whole new generation of critical music fans, helping to promote, publicize and keep the spirit of Frank Zappa's music alive through their concerts. Best of all, the band has played with well over a dozen of Zappa's most important alumni in at least 28 states, as well as Canada and Germany. Project/Object continually seeks to celebrate this successful insurgency into the minds of so many brand new young fans, as well as seasoned Zappa listeners.

Featuring!!!

  • Napoleon Murphy Brock - sax, vocals

  • Andre' Cholmondeley - guitar, vocals

  • Dave Johnsen - bass, vocals

  • Eric Slick - drums, vocals, electronics

  • Eric Svalgard - keys, vocals

  • and special guests!

Project/Object formed in the early '90s in New Jersey. After building a fan base in the tri-state area, Project/Object decided to take their show on the road, performing Zappa's music in more cities and larger venues, with a growing set list from every era of Zappa's 30-year recording career. The band strives to stay true to Frank's vision of constantly challenging the musicians and the audiences.

Since 1998, when the band first took their act on the road, the following Zappa/Mothers alumni have performed with the band: Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ike Willis, Jimmy Carl Black, Ray White, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Denny Walley, Mike Keneally, Arthur Barrow, Ed Mann, Roy Estrada, Billy Mundi and even Al Malkin. Other notable artists they've collaborated with include Phish's Jon Fishman, Capt. Beefheart/Jeff Buckley guitarist Gary Lucas, Chuck Garvey, Al Schnier and Jim Loughlin of moe, New York City big band leader and "Zappologist" Ed Palermo, and Dweezil Zappa drummer Jerry Cucurullo.

Frank Zappa was extremely influential to many musicians and bands, from The Beatles, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper and Yes to many 'jam bands', including Phish, moe and Umphrey's McGee. While many jam band fans are aware that Frank Zappa was influential, they are largely unfamiliar with his music. Of those who are familiar, many were too young to have seen him in concert. Project/Object, with the inclusion of former Zappa frontman Napoleon Murphy Brock, is the closest they will get to the live Zappa experience, and the band has been enjoying increasing support from this growing scene.

DZ & ZPZ

Dweezil Zappa says:

Hello Everyone,

I've noticed that there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the lineup of this year's tour. I would love to clarify things for all of you.

First of all it is important to keep in mind that Frank's music is the only reason this tour exists. We all love it and want to see and hear more of it. It is the true focus and Star of the Show. It's a nice bonus for the fans to have the chance to see musicians who've had previous experience in Frank's band playing his music once again. By no means should their presence on stage be over-emphasized. The mission of everyone on the stage is to present the Music!

As you all know Frank has a vast catalog of multifarious compositions. Over the years he led numerous incarnations of band lineups. Some people stayed for a while, some people left and came back etc. This is not a new concept when it comes to executing Frank's music. In our continuing efforts to provide you with a thrilling concert experience we have embraced some changes in material and in personnel. The ZPZ core band has not changed but we do have a new addition as well as a few probable surprises.

I am extremely excited to be able to present some new songs to you in our setlist this year, aided by the talents of our special guest vocalist, Ray White. I have personally always been a huge fan of the sound of his voice. Hearing him sing "Illinois Enema Bandit" and "Doreen" at rehearsals has been a lot of fun. But hearing him on other songs I've never heard him sing has been even more fun. I'm sure you all will agree when you get your chance to hear him for yourself.

Our special video footage with performances from Frank is also going to be quite provocative.

Later in the year we may even have an international reunion with Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio but that has yet to be confirmed. I'll keep you posted on the status of that as well as any other additions to our lineup.

I have also noticed a few of our European friends requesting ZPZ to come to your hometowns. I would personally love to do more of an extended European tour and visit places like Finland and return to places like Manchester. I have already made my own inquiries into the possibilities of increasing the number of European dates. If it can be done it will done.

I would also like to remind those of you who might be feeling left out for missing last year's tour that the DVD of that tour will be available at the upcoming shows. You can see all 3 + hours of your favorite songs with last years special guests right in your own living room. take a look at the DVD trailer link below. I'm very happy that we were able to capture some of those performances in such fine style for all of you.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing all of you out there this year.

Regards,

Dweezil

SPECIAL GUEST:

Ray White

Guitar and Vocals

Ray White is a rock and blues guitarist most well-known as a member of Frank Zappa's touring ensembles. He was drafted into Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals. He participated on such albums as Zappa in New York (featuring a powerful lead vocal on "The Illinois Enema Bandit"), Tinsel Town Rebellion, and You Are What You Is amongst others in Zappa's voluminous catalogue.

Ray has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW, Don't Push the Clown and Umphrey's McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and has more recently worked with a variety of Michigan artists, including former Rare Earth Drummer Bob Weaver, as well as members of the funk/fusion combo Generic Produce.
