corrie van binsbergen

Dutch guitar player and composer Corrie van Binsbergen's influences range from jazz to Zappa. She has a quite a number of musical outlets, depending on the kind of music she wants to make:

February 2003, Corrie van Binsbergen started the "Schrijvers in Concert" project. Corrie did concerts with various writers, including Toon Tellegen, Josse de Pauw, Remco Campert, Kees van Kooten and Renate Dorrestein. Five albums have been released in this series so far.

2005/04/27, the Loeki Stardust Quartet together with the Mondriaan Kwartet performed a number of pieces by contemporary composers. The concert was called "Blow!" and included a piece by Corrie van Binsbergen, entitled 'Elementaire Deeltjes'. This concert got broadcast on the Dutch Concertzender (FM Radio) on 2005/09/25.

2006/07/14 Corrie van Binsbergen performed solo at the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan, Germany. She performed 'More stories from the girl who wasn't talking' and 'I wasn't talking'.

2008/01, Corrie initiated the Brokken Leerorkest. Once a week, the Brokken Leerokest rehearses in Amsterdam. The last Wednesday of the month, the band will perform at "Zaal 100" in Amsterdam, NL. Conductors for 2008: Corrie van Binsbergen, Arend Niks, Joost Buis, Hans Hasebos and Albert van Veenendaal.

this lady really can play a mean guitar and knows how to arrange the stuff she wrote or borrowed. some zappa quotes can be heard, indeed: sexual harrassment and king kong (eindfinalepotpourri), some rhythmic patterns from andy (closed curtains), a flavour of inca roads (een opening is een gat), let's make the water turn black (pantoffelhelden II), and here and there some you call this music? and although she's got munchkin tits (as some xxx wrote in the affz ng) her guitarplaying has a lot of a balls . . . .

in the 50's there was a popular female singer in the netherlands. her name was corrie brokken. brokken means lumps and grote brokken means big lumps. so far for the linguistics. this double cd (studio takes on disc one and disc two live) does again have that zappa style figuration and contains zoot-suit I - V.

corrie writes:
'zoot-suit' is dedicated to frank zappa. at first part IV & I were two separate compositions. part iv - with the 'catchy' title 'tribute to zappa' - featuring the percussion guys. part i was originally written as a guitarduet. while working on this project the idea came up to combine these pieces into a real 'hommage' ....:"
zoot-suit can be used as a sort of zappa music quiz, cause it's loaded with fz music quotes. still have to check them all out . . .
once asked why she didn't recorded a *real* fz cover, she said fz could do his own covers better than she would ever do.

the "4FM in concert" radio show broadcasted the "electric guitar now" concert from 2003/06/20 incl. corrie van binsbergen's 'movements for electric guitar and orchestra', performed by the radio symphonie orkest, cond. gil rose.

De vijftig natuurleukste korte verhalen uit de Angelsaksische wereldliteratuur verzameld, vertaald en van commentaar voorzien door Kees van Kooten.

Op 26, 27 en 28 mei nodigde hij Corrie van Binsbergen uit om de voorstelling muzikaal te ondersteunen.

Hun samenwerking begon in 2003 en resulteerde in de prachtige CD ‘Live gelezen en gespeeld’.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a recording of the 2002/11/19 dutch radio 4 broadcast: "is dit nog wel jazz?", featuring the second part of the 2002/08/31 concert of CVB4, the Corrie van Binsbergen Quartet.

This is great stuff. If you don't know what Corrie sounds like, buy one of her albums. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
