MIKE KENEALLY BAND: GUITAR THERAPY LIVE

  • mike keneally band: guitar therapy live
        (2006, cd + dvd, usa, exowax 2408-1)
    • Every now and then, you listen an album and you immediately know that you'll be playing it over and over again. "Guitar Therapy Live" is such a gem.
Not just great, but freakin' fantastic.
And the best part of it is that the limited, or deluxe - or whatever you call it - version includes a DVD as well. Recorded live at the 'Baked Patato' in North Hollywood somewhere in 2005, the disc shows what the Mike Keneally Band is all about.
The guitar is mixed louder than the voice, and that's an excellent choice. You notice it right away and it gives the album a rougher sound, making it a real 'guitar album'.
      Right up my alley.

      Highly recommended !!

THE KENEALLIST 2006 06 27

THE KENEALLIST, June 27, 2006: GUITAR THERAPY LIVE & FREE STUFF!

Hi, Scott here, typing to you as Mike relaxes at an outdoor San Diego venue, preparing to enjoy his final Radiohead concert before jetting off to Holland for a gig this weekend with Peter Tiehuis and the Metropole Orchestra. (A tale of free tickets for that show appears below.)

GUITAR THERAPY LIVE RELEASED TODAY

Today's the day the single-CD edition of Mike Keneally Band's Guitar Therapy Live hits the streets. You'll now find it in stores, at <http://www.MooseMart.com>, other online outlets and on iTunes. The CD/DVD Special Edition is moving briskly, but still available at MooseMart as well. Check out <http://www.keneally.com> for more info, as well as links to the great reviews this live monster is getting.

By the way, thank you for making the following fact true: every limited Special Edition Keneally album released by Exowax in the past (Nonkertompf, Dancing, Wooden Smoke) has sold out, except for a few dozen Dog Special Editions still remaining. And, of course the new Guitar Therapy Live Special Editions. You guys are cool!

FREE BLUE DOGSHIRT WITH $30 MOOSEMART PURCHASE

We've added a neato incentive to purchase your Keneally stuff at <http://www.MooseMart.com>: for every $30 you spend there, you'll get a free blue DogShirt while supplies last. (Postage for the shirts will be added to your order.) There's no limit until we run out of blue DogShirts. So theoretically, you could buy $30,000 worth of Keneally stuff and end up with 1000 shirts! But make sure you specify size and quantity when you place your order (it doesn't enter your bonus shirt automatically), otherwise no shirts'll come...

FREE TICKETS TO SEE MIKE PLAY IN HOLLAND THIS SATURDAY

(The first 10 people who email us at <dutchtix@keneally.com> will win a free pair of tickets for this concert! Put "FREE TICKETS" in the subject line.)

Peter Tiehuis & The Metropole Orchestra
Featuring Special Guest Mike Keneally
Conductor: Jörg Achim Keller
Saturday, July 1, 2006, 8:30 p.m.
The concert features new compositions written especially for our friend guitarist Tiehuis by Steve Vai, George Duke, Mike Keneally, John Scofield, Mike Stern and Michiel Borstlap.

OLD STUFF

Depending on what you call "old", here's some old stuff:

Massimo Bassoli's book, "Zappa (e' piu' duro di tuo marito)", got published in 1982.
It's mainly a songtextbook (Zappa's lyrics translated into italian), but it does include a couple of written chapters as well.

JOE JACKSON PERFORMS ZAPPA'S 'DIRTY LOVE'

from shrike on affz:

Costello and Jackson shine in new ways
By Jim Harrington, STAFF WRITER
http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_3975717

[snipples]

Joe Jackson

Out of the two shows, I was definitely looking forward to Jackson's gig more. That's probably just due to supply and demand: While Costello seems to come through town at least once a year, seemingly always with something new worth reviewing, it's been several years since I've had the pleasure of seeing Jackson in concert.
And what a pleasure it was.
From the moment he sat at his piano, to play and sing solo versions of "Home Town" and the classic "Steppin' Out," Jackson absolutely charmed the capacity crowd at the lovely Montalvo Arts Center. Compared to Costello's Bourbon Street bash, Jackson delivered a relatively tame, though nearly as enjoyable, evening of tunes. The vocalist-pianist performed as part of a trio, with bassist Graham Maby and drummer Dave Houghton, and hit the crowd with jazzy renditions of both old and new songs.
After performing a sweet, slowed-down "It's Different for Girls"
from Jackson's best album, "I'm the Man" the vocalist showcased two new compositions, "Too Tough" and "Citizen Sane," the latter of which sounded like classic Jackson. His voice wasn't quite as strong as Costello's, faltering at times during some of the more trying notes on songs such as "Home Town," but it was still enjoyable. The fans would probably liked to have heard a few more oldies, but they were still happy with new tunes such as "Drunk Song" and fairly recent tracks like the hilariously touching "Love at First Light."
During the encore, the fans, of course, got the favorite "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"
which turned into a fun sing-along. But they also got a strong jolt when the singer hit Frank Zappa's "Dirty Love."
It just goes to show that Jackson
like Costello can always be counted on for a good surprise or two.

ANOTHER NEW CAPTAIN BEEFHEART RELEASE

  • captain beefheart and the magic band: the captain's last live concert plus...
        (2006, 2cd, uk, ozitcd 9004)
    • About a month ago, we had "Amsterdam '80", a very fine concert in excellent quality. An impressive release to say the least.

And now, there's "The Captain's Last Live Concert Plus..." (how's that for a stupid title...). Sure, I love listening to the Captain's concerts, although i expect better quality for an official release.
Out on Ozit Morpheus. Bet this isn't their last Beefheart release...
And someone should tell them that the noise reduction thing just didn't work.

JEFF HOLLIE

In 1998, Phil Horneman founded WickedJazzsounds.

WickedJazzsounds is a collaboration of musicians who “in turn ” take the stage to perform improvisational jazz sessions guided by the beats of DJ Phil Horneman and companions. True inspirational experiments that always lead to a unique soundtrack of the night.

Jeff Hollie, who played the saxophone on Zappa's "Joe's Garage" album, is one of the featured musicians at these parties.

WickedJazzsounds has a number of albums out. I don't know if Jeff Hollie performs on these...

BOB HARRIS

info from Charles Ulrich:

Bob Harris played piano on the Turtles' "Lady-O", which is currently available on Solid Zinc: The Turtles Anthology (2002, 2cd, USA, Rhino).

SUL DIVANO

A Tony Moliterni & Sul Divano concert was broadcast on Argentina television. I found this picture in my mailbox of the band in action.

CHILL TOWN

Paul B. adds an interesting item to the "Others Of Invention", artists performing or toying around with the music of Frank Zappa.

Chill Town was a DJ label, presenting special mixes and maxis for DJs. These sort of DJ releases were often illegal (as this one was).

  • various artists: chill town presents - heavyweight breaks, beats & grooves
(1999, lp, uk, chill town frd11)

You can read the track-list on the right.

THE RESIDENTS

The Residents have two new releases. The first one is called "River Of Crime" (picture on the right), the second one is the "Cube E Box Set".

"River Of Crime" is a 2cdr album. Blank album. The material that has to be on it, can be downloaded the next couple of weeks from the internet.
ROC will also be released as a 'regular' CD album, but this one has some extras like ringtones, wallpapers, and other downloadable stuff...

"Cube E Box Set" is a 3 disc album: 2 CDs and 1 DVD. The audio discs are a complete, unedited Cube E concert. The DVD contains all the existing footage  of the Cube E show. It's a 7" package and contains a 40-page booklet.

Check Ralphamerica or Euroralph for more info.

DOCTOR DARK

Bill Saunders sent in a nice picture of the band.

Doctor Dark's line-up looks like this:

  • Bill Saunders: vocals

  • Joe Nolan: guitar

  • Travis Moody: guitar

  • Warren Brelsford: bass

  • Eric Slick: drums

Former Paul Green School Of Rock student Eric Slick will be touring with Adrian Belew in the near future.

DOCTOR DARK: METAL MEN

  • doctor dark: metal men
        (2006, cdr, usa, private release)
    • October 16, 2005, Doctor Dark presented their new line-up, opening for Project/Object at 'Toad's Place' in New Haven, CT. For those of us, who couldn't be there, the Doctor Dark performance has been made available.
I really enjoyed listening to this. The band is in great shape, and 'new guys' Warren Brelsford (bass) and Eric Slick (drums) fit in perfectly. There's a couple of Zappa tunes on there ('Metal Man' and 'The Torture Never Stops' (with Steve Aseta on sax !), but the real highlights are the powerful versions of the Beefheart compositions. 'Plastic Factory', 'Moonlight On Vermont', 'Electricity', 'Sun Zoom Spark'... they're all there.

As always, Bill Saunders' vocal energy is astounding, and both Joe Nolan and Travis Moody play a mean guitar.

      Recommended.

CORRIE EN DE BROKKEN

Every month, Stichting Brokken (stichting = a non-profit organisation) will be celebrating "Old and New": old projects combined with new experiments.

For June 28, 2006, the program looks like this:

  • "Shut up; I wasn't talking!"
by Corrie van Binsbergen (guitar) and Rachel de Boer (video)
  • Tatiana Koleva & Hans Hasebos - marimba & vibrafoon
  • Dionys Breukers Carte Blanche
Dionys Breukers, Nico Brandsen -toetsen, Kim Weemhoff -percussie
  • a compilation / movie of the first Corrie en de Grote Brokken shows (1997)

JIMMY WEBB

  • jimmy webb: archive + live
        (2005, 2cd, australia, wea records 8122731652)
    • Jimmy Webb's "Archive + Live" double album combines a sort of compilation with a live recording. The live recording makes up disc two and is taken from his Royal Albert Hall concert, April 8, 1972. For this first European appearance, Jimmy Webb performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. The tracklist includes a couple of familiar tunes, including Frank Zappa's 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama'.
I'm not convinced of the extra value of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, they make it all sound a bit mellow, but the Zappa composition doesn't suffer from it.
Nice piano part and an angry guitar. I like it.

THE RETURN OF TRUBEE

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
INSPIRED BY THE SPIRIT OF DICK CHENEY

I pledge allegiance
To the flag
Of the liars and hypocrites
Of America
And to the MONEY
For which they lie, cheat, murder, steal, grovel, pimp, and whore,
Damn nation
Swimming in shit
With unwarranted surveillance, infantile entertainment,
Christian Nazis cramming rules down our throats,
Family values, torture chambers,
Stupidity, and injustice
For all
Forevermore.

SPECIAL OPPS Video Preview on YouTube

On May 22nd, I went back into the studio at Universal Music Publishing Group to cut the first round of piano overdubs for the Special Opps studio album.  Mike Fennel engineered the session, which was really fun for me, and my friend Sean Kinney videotaped the proceedings.  Over Memorial Day weekend, my friend Johnny D. and I put together a video for those of you who would like a preview of the music to come:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhkzVGNlgKg

Tonight I'll be headed back to The Mothership Studios with Neil Citron who will be plugging the piano parts in with the rest of the main tracks.  On July 3rd, I'll be hitting UMPG again for the second round of piano overdubs as well as performing "Haasis," which is the absurdly difficult solo piano piece that begins the album.  At that point, the album will be over 50% complete!

"The Porpentine" Edging Towards Completion

Speaking of completing things, I am about 85% finished with the composition phase of "The Porpentine" which is the composition that will end the studio album.  The first 5 movements are all complete and orchestrated, and the ending is complete and orchestrated.  There are a couple movements that I've been having to wrestle with, but I have given myself the beginning of October as a deadline for completion, which would be about 1 year after I began work on the piece.  Although we've been performing sections of it live as a 6 piece, the composition is for full orchestra plus rock ensemble and has 12 distinct movements, which are:

  1. Behind a World of Curtains

  2. Journey Through the Snow and the Early Twilight

  3. Thessaly Calls Down the Moon

  4. Breakfast in the Forest of Tweeners

  5. My Little Judas/The Black Guard

  6. The Citadel of the Cuckoo

  7. Playing the Game of You

  8. The Brightly Shining Sea

  9. Waiting for the Moon to Rise

  10. The Breaking of the Heirogram

  11. Morpheus Unmakes the Land

  12. Flight of the Cuckoo/The Dorothy Option

The piece will be about 20 minutes long when finished and will no doubt be the greatest thing I have ever written in my life, mostly because I've been working so hard on it for so long.  Recording it is going to be quite the adventure!

"The Universe Will Provide" and "Freak Out! 40th Anniversary Celebration" on NPS Radio Holland

There are two specials coming up on NPS Radio Holland you should look out for!  The first is a broadcast of a live performance of "The Universe Will Provide," composed by Mike Keneally and orchestrated by Mike Keneally and myself, from earlier in the year.  That will take place on Monday, June 26th @ 3 pm Pacific Time and 6 pm Eastern Time, and you can listen live on WebRadio @ http://omroep.nl/nps/output/4fm.html.  The second one is a special radio documentary that Co de Kloet is putting together to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the "Freak Out!" album, which was the first release by Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, and is widely accepted as the first true "alternative rock" album.  It was also the first double-LP in the world of rock as well as the first "concept album."  In fact, this was one of the albums that inspired Sir Paul McCartney to do "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."  I have been working with Co to interview some of the people who worked on the album and who were around at the time, including Carl Franzoni and Roy Estrada.  Some info (in Dutch) is below:

VEERTIG JAAR FREAK OUT!

It can happen here, op Radio 4FM!

Een programma van Co de Kloet, met medewerking van Chris Opperman, Marc Broer en Menno Kalmann.

Hosting "Don't Call Us Tori"

As if all of that weren't enough, I have been hosting the "Don't Call Us Tori" showcases @ Karma Coffeehouse (1644 N.
