Lots and lots and lots of news...

SHEIK YERBOUTI

  • sheik yerbouti: unverschämtheit - volume 1
(2004, cd, ger, goodlife records sycd0401)

    • Three years.  Three long years, since "Confetti Music". But it was worth the wait.

Sheik Yerbouti is a German band that plays the music of Frank Zappa. "Unverschämtheit - Volume 1" presents a collection of recordings from various concerts. The band plays incredible tight and you can tell by ear that they're having fun. Great keyboards, great guitar work, and excellent (!!) vocals by Harry Sebel.

A must-have for any Zappa fan.

STEVE VAI

  • The September issue of Dutch Gitarist magazine has Steve Vai and Joe Satriani on the cover.
It has a very nice 5-page article about their G3-tour.

  • steve vai: live in london
(2004, cd, usa, epic el 92790)

    • Yes, I know, you already have the DVD, "Live In London" recorded live at 'The Astoria' on December 6th & 7th, 2001. And now they made this little CD album out of it...

But just in case that you don't have the DVD yet, this little dittie might give you a nice impression of what Steve Vai is all about.
      I like it.

QUAUDIOPHILIAC

  • frank zappa: quaudiophiliac (74)
(2004, dvda, usa, dts entertainment 69286-01125-9-9)

    • This is absolutely superb. And you have to understand that I don't even have a surround dolby quadro 5.1 whatever system. Nope. Just a DVD-player that I linked to my oldfashioned stereo, blasting 'Rollo', 'Chunga Basement' or 'Waka/Jawaka'.

      Thank you.

DEKE DICKERSON

Last august, the UM newsletter read:

***
"Patrick Neve says:
I just got a Deke Dickerson CD called "Mr. Entertainment" which includes:
'World's Greatest Sinner - Demo, previously unreleased'

It's great!  Not just the Sinner, the whole thang.

-- Patrick
***

And Patrick was very right. It is indeed a very nice album.

FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEGS

People have been asking me to show some more pictures of Zappa Bootleg albums. Not just the latest releases, but some of the older ones as well.

Here we go.

If you need the exact data like where, when, who and maybe even why, be sure to check out the essential Zappa Patio website!!

  • frank zappa: guitar player
        (????, cd-bootleg, ??, fire power fp-0055)

    • Great cover. Taken from a 1978 issue of Guitar Player Magazine. Cut and Paste job.
The album presents the first part of the 1978/09/21 Poughkeepsie concert.

  • frank zappa: caress me
        (????, cd-bootleg, japan, black panther bp072)

    • This album has a rather psychedelic cover, showing some sort of butterfly...
The recording is a rip off of the "electric aunt jemima" bootleg. Comes from Japan. Tough one to find.

  • frank zappa: a vegetable by any other name
        (1999, cd-bootleg, japan, trystar tr006)

    • This one's from a couple of years ago, at the time introducing an 'uncirculated show' (1971/11/21-E concert copenhagen, denmark) among collectors.
Nice concert, nice album (but very hard to find...)

  • frank zappa: z - all you need is glove
        (1986, 2lp-bootleg, usa, ingsoc hr2911)

has the same cover as the cd-reissue:

  • z - all you need is glove
        (????, cd-bootleg, ??,
    raven records rr013)

but the cd does not include side 4 of the vinyl version.

    • "Z - All You Need Is Glove" presents some superb moments from the 1981 & 1984 tour.

  • frank zappa: 20 years of frank zappa
        (1981, 12lp-box, usa, mud shark)

    • Nick-named Bogus Box # 2, "20 Years Of Frank Zappa" was released in 1981. Originally, there were 1.000 box sets pressed, but 565 were seized in one raid & other legal problems netted an additional 100.
The box was re-released later (label says: fz 4801-12).
(info: the "On Tour With The Evil Prince" book)
Copies of this magnificent set still pop up from time to time...

  • frank zappa: uncle frankie's prime porc cuts volume one

    • "Uncle Frankie's Prime Porc Cuts, subtitled "Volume One", is a beautiful black and white picture disc. I've never heard of a volume two, but one never knows...
The album presents material from 1968 to 1984. Excellent quality.

  • frank zappa: scherade part 1
        (1989, 2lp-bootleg, ??, barking pumpkin / pax records)

    • "Scherade pt.1" has a beautiful full color cover. It presents material from the 1988 band, all audience recordings from German shows.

  • frank zappa: scherade part 2
        (1989, 2lp-bootleg, ??, barking pumpkin records)

    • Part two, and another double album. Again, a nice full color picture on the cover, and again, presenting material from the 1988 tour.

  • frank zappa: scandinavian nights part 1
        (1984, lp-bootleg, ??, wizardo)

    • The "Scandinavian Nights" bootlegs are a bit older. This one is on blue vinyl.
Presenting material from Copenhagen, Denmark, recorded in 1976 and 1979.

A MESSAGE FROM BROTHER AWEST

a message from Brother Awest:

Hello Sinners and Winners-

Members from the Eagle’s Nest Prayer Group saw your website concerning our dear friend who has crossed over, Brother Frank Zappa, as it relates to me, Brother Awest.

Please, Please revise the mention under the “Brother Awest” category…regarding “my official website” …because the party listed (Psycho Comedy…) is in no way affiliated with me, my mission, “comedy” or anything else related to me. Unfortunately this misguided person is using 19 year old photos and copy he apparently created in order to link the unwitting to his adult sites , pop-ups and galleries of other porn sites.

I would sincerely appreciate your efforts to disconnect this cyber parasite.

Our official “Brother Awest World Salivation Ministry” website is under construction…and I assure you that I will contact you as soon as it is up.

Thank you for keeping Frank’s flame bright!

Be Good-

Brother Awest

4) MK AND FRIENDS ON DUTCH RADIO

5) SCOTT FAKES A MIKE POEM

Hi, Scott here with the latest Keneally poop while Mike grooves through Germany for the next ten days or so. As you may have noticed, there's plenty of action afoot here at Exowax and we're having a ball, thank you. We sincerely hope you are, too.

RADIO KENEALLY GOES LOW-FI!

If you surf to http://www.radiokeneally.com, you'll notice a new page when you hit the "Listen Now!" button-it gives you a choice of applications to listen with and now you can listen to RK with your dialup internet connection at 24k in addition to our semi-hi-fi 56k stream. Hopefully, this improvement will solve most of the connection difficulties some of you have been experiencing since we launched this puppy.

A day or so after Mike and the band's September 5 concert at Lestat's in San Diego, Radio Keneally aired the show in its entirety. Songs from the show are still being featured, and we plan to do a lot more special stuff like that. As you may have noticed, we're also adding more cool songs, live versions, demos and nonsense all the time. Man, it's fun!

LOTS OF KENEALLY CONCERTS

* Steve Vai's "The Aching Hunger" Broadcasting TOMORROW (9/8)!

The first part of Steve Vai's "The Aching Hunger" (composed by Steve Vai for the Metropole Orkest including myself on piano and Bryan Beller on bass guitar) makes it's broadcast debut tomorrow, Sept. 8th, on 4fm Radio, The Netherlands.  You can listen to a webcast of the concert by going here: http://portal.omroep.nl/radio/mplayer4.  All broadcasts are 22:30 - 24:00 Dutch time, which translates to 4:30 - 6:00 pm EST, 1:30 - 3:00 pm PST.  This will be the first in a series of radio specials that will also feature specials on Mike Keneally, Terry Bozzio, and myself.  All shows are included in the calendar below.

* Special Opps: Live @ Level One DVD

To make a long story short: The Level One show last Tuesday rocked so hard and the video came out looking and sounding so great that Johnny D. has successfully talked me into just releasing the entire hour-long concert on DVD, so that is what we'll be working on next.  Pre-ordering information will be available in the next e-mail update (price will likely be $20 plus shipping), but here is the set list:

1.  Johannah (C. Opperman/A. LaFosse/J. Kuhn/I. Slape/K. Dooley)
2.  Haasis (C. Opperman)
3.  Beware of the Random Factor (C. Opperman)
4.  Miles Behind (C. Opperman)
5.  Electric Jihad (A. LaFosse/C. Opperman/K. Dooley/I. Slape)
6.  Sophia's Dream (C. Opperman)
7.  Kamp Keneally (C. Opperman/M. Keneally)
8.  Tanya's Song (C. Opperman)
9.  Someone to Watch Over Me (G. & I. Gershwin)/To Return to You (K. Parsons)

The band that night was myself on piano, Andre LaFosse on electric guitar, Jen Kuhn on electric cello, Isaac Slape on bass guitar, and Kevin Dooley on drums with special guest Kat Parsons on vocals.  Bonus tracks will include uncompressed versions of the three videos Johnny D. and I made from the 7/16 show for No Drinks for Libbie, an alternate version of To Return to You featuring Kat Parsons, and White Willow featuring Mike Keneally

This will be my first official live release and I'm pretty excited that it's going to be something I can be proud of.  MAJOR props to Johnny D. and Steve Laub (the latter of which drove up from San Diego just to videotape the show) without whom this would not be possible, everyone in Special Opps esp. Andre who came and played the gig without even the benefit of a rehearsal.  Thanks also to Kat Parsons, Sebastian A. Bach, Nikki Katt, Libbie Schrader, The Astra Heights, Tanya & Brian Smith, Gabi Kochlani, Mike Grey & everyone at Level One.  What a happy surprise.

We're aiming for a Thanksgiving release.  This release will (probably) replace the "Made-up Songs" live compilation, at least in the short term.

* oppymusic.com 4.0!

We just finished the 4th major upgrade of http://www.oppymusic.com/!  Why not go check it out for yourself?  It still needs some tweaking on my part, but it's up there.

* Shankar & Gingger World Tour

Over the past summer, I've been rehearsing with world music superstars Shankar & Gingger to be their right hand music man on their upcoming world tour beginning with some U.S. dates this fall (including a performance at the World Peace Music Awards in San Francisco with such legendary musicians as Lionel Ritchie, Gloria Gaynor, Hootie & The Blowfish, Jon Secada, Peter Yarrow & more. All proceeds will go to Orphans of War and Terrorism

Their latest album, "Celestial Body" on Mondo Melodia has been added to the playlists of over 1,000 U.S. radio stations in its 6th week of release.  S&G were prominently featured on the soundtrack to "The Passion of the Christ" (coincidentally, Shankar also appears on Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for "The Last Temptation of Christ").  Their last album, "One in a Million," featured special guests Phil Collins, Steve & Mike Porcaro (Toto), David Paich, Guy Allison, Tony Levin, Mike Porcaro, Steve Vai, and Steve Lukather.

Shankar himself boasts an impressive list of credits, having invented the 10-string stereophonic double violin, a unique instrument that features the entire range of the string orchestra.  He has also worked as a composer, arranger, producer, singer, violinist and performer with artists and bands like Frank Zappa (which is how I became aware of him), Peter Gabriel, Shakti, Phil Collins, Trilok Gurtu, Talking Heads, Van Morrison, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, The Pretenders, and many others.

We've been having a lot of fun in rehearsal and the shows are going to be amazing.

DAVID BAKER

David Baker, 58, Prolific Recording Engineer

By STEPHEN MILLER Staff Reporter of the Sun

David Baker, who died of an apparent heart attack July 14, was a recording engineer who participated in more than 2,000 recording sessions and remastered the entire Vanguard catalog for release on CD.

Renowned within the recording industry for his devotion to naturalistic sound, he worked with a broad range of musicians after getting his start with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention at Apostolic Studios in New York in the 1960s. He also released a collection of field recordings he made of songs and voices of the civil rights movement, collected in the Mississippi Delta in 1965.

Among those whom he recorded were Al Di Meola, Shirley Horn, Astor Piazzolla, John Zorn, Larry Coryell, Sun Ra,
George Clinton, Parliament and Funkadelic, and the Moody Blues. In a biographical essay, the musician Eugene Chadbourne wrote, "The obvious question is whether David Baker still has time left to exist outside the recording studio."

Baker grew up in Atlanta and became fascinated with recording technology as a boy. Baker's grandfather was a salesman for Columbia Records in the late 1920s, and his father ran a large stereo dealership in Atlanta. Baker Audio also housed an AM/FM radio station and became known as "The House that Music Built." Baker at age 6 began accompanying his father on jobs installing large stereos.

According to Baker's sister, Karen Hartrampf, Baker made his first serious recording when he was 10 or 11, of Elvis Presley singing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1956. The recording was made with a handheld microphone on an antiquated wire recorder. "We played it and played it and played it, and it broke, but it was a pretty good recording for those days," Ms. Hartrampf recalled.

Later that year, Baker's parents were killed in an automobile accident, and Baker and his four sisters were raised by relatives.

While still in his teens, Baker began making amateur recordings of orchestras and jazz bands, and coordinated sound engineering for the annual Atlanta Arts Festival. In 1965, he headed to Mississippi, where he made recordings of demonstrations, meetings, and sermons. The recording, "Movement Soul," was re-issued earlier this month on CD by the Library of Congress.

"People are getting beat up, and they can't vote," Baker said on NPR on July 2. "The church became the place to talk about it."

Baker studied recording at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music and at the Institute of Audio Research in New York. In the early 1970s, he became closely associated with the avant-garde "loft jazz" movement. In 1975, he was hired as the chief engineer at Vanguard.

Over the years, Baker worked with most of the important jazz labels, including ECM, Blue Note, Atlantic, Black Saint, Soul Note, and Amulet. In 1998, he won a Grammy award for his work on the Shirley Horn recording "I Remember Miles."

In recent years, he had become interested in world music, and traveled to Indonesia to record "Pitamaha: Music from Bali." At the time of his death, he was in Rochester, N.Y., recording the Paul Smoker and Damon Short Quintet.

"It's going to be a great recording," Mr. Smoker said. "It sounds great."

David Baker

Born October 12, 1945, in Mount Vernon; died July 14 in Rochester of an apparent heart attack; survived by his wife, Kyoka, and four sisters.

MONSTER ROAD (BRUCE BICKFORD)

From Brett Ingram & Jim Haverkamp
September 8, 2004
Fw: Monster Road update: Bickford on NPR today!

Hello everyone,

An urgent update from your friends at the film "Monster Road"--an interview with underground animator Bruce Bickford and the director of "Monster Road," Brett Ingram, will be airing today, Wednesday, September 8th, on the national NPR radio show "Day to Day."

For the overseas folks on the list, or those whose local NPR station does not air "Day to Day," you can listen to a live stream from our hometown station, WUNC, from 1 to 2 pm Eastern time (5 to 6 pm GMT) here:
<http://www.wunc.org/about/listen.html>

Alex Chadwick, host of the show and a longtime Bickford fan, interviewed Bruce and Brett this summer while they were attending the Los Angeles Film Festival. We just heard from Day to Day's producer that the piece will run about 7 minutes.  If there's breaking news, the piece might get bumped back a day or two, but if you miss it, you'll also be able to hear it archived at Day to Day's web site:
<http://www.npr.org/programs/day>

To find out more about the film and check out our new trailer, please visit our web site:
<http://www.brighteyepictures.com>

Also, the band that did the amazing score for the film, Shark Quest, has just released their new CD on Merge Records, "Gods and Devils", which features several songs inspired by the film (as well as several equally amazing new tracks). You owe it to yourself to check it out!
<http://www.mergerecords.com/catalog.php?item_id=283&method=item>

We also have quite a few screenings coming up over the next several months, so with any luck you or your peeps will be able to see the film at one of these fine venues--please spread the word if you can! (And for the NYC folks on the list, we've got a Big Apple screening brewing for early December--more details soon!)

JOHN TRUBEE

From John Trubee, September 8, 2004

I cannot see or recognize that oft-cited grand hallucination
known as "society". I only perceive and interrelate with
individual human beings.

When I see a human being unhappy because he or she
feels compelled to conform to the conventions of "society"
I tell him or her "Make yourself happy first. Why ought you
torture yourself over the implied rules of an imaginary entity?"

What kind of world would we live in if it was filled with unhappy
human beings? Probably the kind of world in which we
currently reside.

I prefer to live in a world of happy individuals. I first start by
making myself happy; then, if I see someone making himself
miserable over the conventions of "society" I attempt to make
him or her aware that  they are torturing themselves over a
collective hallucination.

If "society" does exist and if its welfare is so important to us,
and if "society" is composed of individual human beings, then
wouldn't the happiness of those individual human beings lead to
and ensure a happy "society"?

Also--why do so many people value the welfare of the grand,
collective hallucination "society" over the happiness of specific,
individual human beings with whom they daily interrelate?

The cause of "society" is often merely a facade behind which
the bully hides.

MASSEY FERGUSSON

I already told you that belgian band Massey Fergusson performed Frank Zappa's 'Love Of My Life' on August 7, 2004, at Greet & Ive's wedding, and that, later, at the wedding party, they did Zappa's 'Bobby Brown'.

Thanks to Ludo Verhoeven, I'm able to share some impressions with you.

The picture on the right shows the happy couple.

The one below presents Massey Fergusson in action, later that night.

September 4 2004

Just got back from a Keneally Band rehearsal for our gig this Sunday, and my goodness, this is going to be a good show.

Upcoming Concerts

  • 2004/09/05 mike keneally band concert 'lestat's', san diego, ca, usa

There will be a photographer present at this show, taking pictures to accompany a feature about me and the new albums which will appear in Guitar Player Magazine this December, so if you wear a platypus costume or something like that to the show you might get your picture taken.

Thank you for the really nice response to The Universe Will Provide and Parallel Universe.  They're doing great and TUWP is getting a lot of encouraging early press attention - looks like you'll be seeing a number of items in print in the coming months.  We've got two great publicists working on TUWP and Dog and things are looking good.  Dog hits retail November 16 - the press campaign for that album will swing into action after Labor Day.  Should be a cool bunch of months coming up.

How about that Zell Miller, huh?

Hopefully you've been checking out RadioKeneally [http://www.radiokeneally.com].  Response has been reatllly kl'cvogda, and we all know what that means.  We'll soon be adding a stream for dialup connections. If you go there now, you won't be able to say you hadn't gone there before later!

STEVE VAI

Steve Vai says:

Hey Folks,
Well, you may not like this but I pushed the release of the new record 'til Feb 2005. Many reasons for this. All this touring has left me no time to properly set up the marketing necessary for a release such as this. Frankly, I would prefer if it was just you and I in this marketing relationship right here from the web page but in order to do it correctly and put our best foot forward, I need time to do the many many (did I say many?) interviews, TV, radio, bla bla bla, that it takes.

Eh, I can hold my breath 'til Feb.

VAI PIANO REDUCTIONS VOL 1:
Ah, another box set installment. Several years ago, while putting the concept together for the box set, I wanted to include some unique CD's. I adore solo piano music when performed with sincerity and passion so I thought it might be nice to include a CD of solo piano arrangements of 10 or so songs from the catalog.

Hmmm, where to find a specially gifted piano player that possesses the ears and imagination to construct arrangements out of some of these challenging little fantasies, and the fingers to make them sound extraordinary. Ah yes, Mike Keneally! Mike knocked himself out on this stuff folks.

He arranged and performed the following songs for solo piano. Some of it is truly breathtaking.
All About Eve // Salamanders in the Sun // Touching Tongues // Ballerina 12/24 // Die To Live // Bledsoe Bluvd // Junkie // Dying Day // Pig // Sisters // Kill the Guy with the Ball // The God Eaters

The CD is finally complete and we are hoping to make it available exclusively at vai.com by the end of this year.

DON JULIN

  • don julin: tractor
        (2001, cdr, usa, private release)

    • Don Julin is an excellent musician (mandolin) and a recording engineer. He has played on more than a dozen cds ranging in style from folk to gospel to jazz to avant garde.
Don Julin also was the Big Swifty & Associates mastermind, a band that had a number of Frank Zappa compositions on their repertoire. (read on below)
"Tractor" is a very fine, jazzy album. And Zappa's 'Orange County Lumber Truck' fits in nicely.

BIG SWIFTY & ASSOCIATES

  • big swifty & associates:
wouldn't you rather be involved in a series of colorful time-wasting trends?
        (1998, cd, usa, private release)

    • I told you last month that www.thebignote.com was offering some mp3 material from Big Swifty & Associates.
In 1998, Big Swifty & Associates released an album called "Wouldn't You Rather Be Involved...". It hit my mailbox today, and I'm listening to it right now. This is one superb album. After the first few notes, you know where the band got it's name. Zappa's spirit is all around. Lots of very fine music, featuring Don Julin on amazing mandolin. The disc also includes a very fine rendition of Zappa's 'Absolutely Free' and a couple of older version of tracks that can also be found on Julin's "Tractor" album.
A must-have for any Zappa fan.
