DAVID GREENBERG

  • david greenberg: spring any day now
        (2003, cd, can, marquis music)
    • David Greenberg's "Spring Any Day Now" album is subtitled "Music of 18th century Scotland and elsewhere". You can imagine my suprise that it also included a nice version of Zappa's 'Echidna's Arf'.

ZAPPATRONIX PICTURES

I received a little promotional mpeg4-movie track from Marco Cortesi / Zappatronix. An excellent mix of rock guitar, jazz trumpet, and an electronic beat. It's a shame that Zappatronix isn't coming to Zappanale. I would have loved to see them.

I can imagine that Zappatronix logical habitat is a theater stage or a smaller club. Nevertheless, they would have made quite an impression at Zappanale.

The pictures below are stills from the mpeg4-movie.

THE CZECH FZ FAN CLUB ART PROJECT

Here's yet another beautiful entry for the Czech FZ Fanclub art project !

The end date of the project has been rescheduled to the end of June !!

DZ & ZPZ

Dweezil Zappa says:

Hello Everyone,

I've noticed that there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the lineup of this year's tour. I would love to clarify things for all of you.

First of all it is important to keep in mind that Frank's music is the only reason this tour exists. We all love it and want to see and hear more of it. It is the true focus and Star of the Show. It's a nice bonus for the fans to have the chance to see musicians who've had previous experience in Frank's band playing his music once again. By no means should their presence on stage be over-emphasized. The mission of everyone on the stage is to present the Music!

As you all know Frank has a vast catalog of multifarious compositions. Over the years he led numerous incarnations of band lineups. Some people stayed for a while, some people left and came back etc. This is not a new concept when it comes to executing Frank's music. In our continuing efforts to provide you with a thrilling concert experience we have embraced some changes in material and in personnel. The ZPZ core band has not changed but we do have a new addition as well as a few probable surprises.

I am extremely excited to be able to present some new songs to you in our setlist this year, aided by the talents of our special guest vocalist, Ray White. I have personally always been a huge fan of the sound of his voice. Hearing him sing "Illinois Enema Bandit" and "Doreen" at rehearsals has been a lot of fun. But hearing him on other songs I've never heard him sing has been even more fun. I'm sure you all will agree when you get your chance to hear him for yourself.

Our special video footage with performances from Frank is also going to be quite provocative.

Later in the year we may even have an international reunion with Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio but that has yet to be confirmed. I'll keep you posted on the status of that as well as any other additions to our lineup.

I have also noticed a few of our European friends requesting ZPZ to come to your hometowns. I would personally love to do more of an extended European tour and visit places like Finland and return to places like Manchester. I have already made my own inquiries into the possibilities of increasing the number of European dates. If it can be done it will done.

I would also like to remind those of you who might be feeling left out for missing last year's tour that the DVD of that tour will be available at the upcoming shows. You can see all 3 + hours of your favorite songs with last years special guests right in your own living room. take a look at the DVD trailer link below. I'm very happy that we were able to capture some of those performances in such fine style for all of you.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing all of you out there this year.

Regards,

Dweezil

THE WEASEL MUSIC

Read all about it (and listen to it) over at the Zappateers site !!

  1. Albert Hall Spoken Introduction

  2. Chamber Music Piece 1

  3. Mozart Ballet

  4. Some Zany MOI Bullshit

  5. Chamber Music Piece 2

Here it is: 1/24th of "The History and Collected Improvisations of the MOI."

THE STORY OF THE ACQUISITION: A firsthand account from my source ...

So I get a call from the widow of the great artist, Neon Park. She says, "I've been going through Marty's stuff (Neon's real name was Marty) and I have a lot of records of his. I was talking to (mutual friend) Betzy and she said you like records. Do you want them?" and, being the vinyl hound I am, I said, "You bet! I'll take 'em all sight unseen." She said, "Okay, I'll go pull the can back in from the street." She had had them all in a trash can waiting for the Sanitation Engineers to pick them up.

Now I know Neon worked for many years doing album art for Warner Brothers (best known for Zappa's WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH and his string of covers for LITTLE FEAT) and was on their mailing list for new releases. Upon going through the LPs from the trash bin I found the usual assortment of product, some good, some not to my liking.

But then...

In an envelope addressed to Mr. Frank Zappa at his Laurel Canyon address, I found three studio acetate test recordings: a early ELO LP, a copy of Jean-Luc Ponty's Zappa tribute LP, KING KONG, and a curious disc labeled "The Weasel Music". Suspecting that this might indeed BE SOMETHING, I cautiously played it once. It seemed to be a live recording of the Mothers goofing around on stage doing what I guessed to be a mock-ballet. While light pseudo-classical piano arpeggios play (Ian Underwood?) you can hear the shuffling of feet and various antics while the crowd respond with laughter and amusement. I would imagine that it was mostly a visual presentation as opposed to an essential Zappa musical composition.

I kept this relic in good condition, still in its original envelope and cardboards. I lent it to my new friend and Zappaphile, Krel, when I moved to Little Rock. He has played it only twice, recording it both times.

So there you go.

ZpZ - RAY WHITE

SPECIAL GUEST:

Ray White

Guitar and Vocals

Ray White is a rock and blues guitarist most well-known as a member of Frank Zappa's touring ensembles. He was drafted into Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals. He participated on such albums as Zappa in New York (featuring a powerful lead vocal on "The Illinois Enema Bandit"), Tinsel Town Rebellion, and You Are What You Is amongst others in Zappa's voluminous catalogue.

Ray has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW, Don't Push the Clown and Umphrey's McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and has more recently worked with a variety of Michigan artists, including former Rare Earth Drummer Bob Weaver, as well as members of the funk/fusion combo Generic Produce.

THE WRONG OBJECT - ANNIE WHITEHEAD - HARRY BECKETT

  • the wrong object featuring annie whitehead and harry becket: platform one
        (2007, cd, uk, jazzprint jpvp138cd)
    • "It's jazz, Jim, but not as we know it".

Shazam... Here it is. The long awaited album of The Wrong Object featuring Annie Whitehead on trombone and Harry Beckett on trumpet. Sure, I'm prejudiced as I was at the two Mechelen concerts where a big part of this album got recorded, but still...
"Platform One" is another new album by The Wrong Object and it's great. The compositions by Michel Delville, Frank Zappa, Annie Whitehead and Harry Beckett, make a perfect mixture. The band is in great shape, and guests Annie Whitehead and Harry Becket add an extra flavour that fits in very well. It's like they've been playing together for years.
My favourite tracks: Annie Whitehead's 'Platform 1' and Frank Zappa's 'Filthy Habits'.
      God, this is good...

You've probably seen the below picture before. It's FZ performing with Pink Floyd at Amougies.

Who can help me out ??

The name of the magazine & date of publication would be a great help.

ELTON DEAN & THE WRONG OBJECT

  • elton dean & the wrong object: the unbelievable truth
        (2007, cd, usa, moonjune)
    • October 2005, the Elton Dean and The Wrong Object had scheduled four concerts. Two of these didn't happen because of Elton's health problems. The remaining two took place in Liège, Belgium, and in Paris, France.
Moonjune Records recently released the Paris concert recordings of Elton Dean & The Wrong Object as "The Unbelievable Truth". Moonjune should be known to everyone as the label that puts out albums by artists like Hugh Hopper, The Soft Machine and Tripod, just to name a few. "The Unbelievable Truth" fits in nicely.
The album itself is astonishing. I've heard The Wrong Object on various occasions with different line-ups, and the Elton Dean / The Wrong Object project is an essential chapter in my book.
Just listen to the first notes of 'Seven For Lee' and you'll know what I mean.

A NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

CUCAMONGA

The 2007/05/14 Cucamonga radio show (on belgian radio 1) featured Stuurbaard Bakkebaard with a broadcast of a part of the 2006/12/07 concert at the "Transmusicales de Rennes" festival, Cpt. Cheese-Beard & the 7 Sisters of Prevention with Zappa's 'I'm The Slime' and some parts of the new Zappa DVD.

ANOTHER NEW ODIN ALBUM

  • odin: live at the maxim
(2007, cd, ger, long hair lhc57)
    • While Odin's previous release took an look at a 1973 session, "Live At The Maxim" even goes a bit further back in time. "Live At The Mamim" got recorded in Schweinfurt, Germany in September 1971.
Zappa's Mothers were an obvious influence of Odin. Odin even performed a number of Zappa compositions in concert. On "Live At The Maxim" one can find excellent versions of 'Oh No', 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama', 'Little House', and 'Peaches en Regalia'.

MARKUS STAUSS

A couple of months ago, I mentioned a new album by Markus Stauss:

I have sad news about a Zappa alumni: Kurt McGettrick (bari sax - '88 tour) died last Sunday night (5/7/07).  Cancer...

Kurt was a friend and a musical colleague of mine.  He was an enormously talented and accomplished musician and he will be greatly missed here in LA.

Here's a link to a sax web forum where people are paying tribute to Kurt McGettrick, the musician.

VOICE OF CHEEZ

-----Original Message-----

Voice of Cheez
2007 05 13

Subject: Zappa This Friday

Voice of Cheez Frank Zappa Tribute

Friday, May 18
Nietzsche's, 248 Allen Street, Buffalo, NY
10 pm show time
$6 cover

No commercial potential? Fortunately for Zappa fans in Western New York there are still musicians out there who aren't "only in it for the money."

Buffalo's long-standing Frank Zappa tribute band, Voice of Cheez, can be seen this Friday, May 18 at Nietzsche's, 10 pm. Always an entertaining and lovingly crafted show, the virtual "super group" features Tom Fenton (guitar & vocals), Tina Peel (vocals & madness), Kilissa Cissoko (sax, flute & vocals), Cathy Carfagna (keyboards & vocals), Doug Lambert (bass) and George Olmsted (drums).

Voice of Cheez took their name from a track on Zappa's 1967 debut album, Freak Out. The original "Voice of Cheese" is a dull-witted monologue by Suzie Creamcheese-a parody of the all-American cheerleader-type. Voice of Cheez, the band, performs songs from all eras of Zappa's tenure as the witty satirist of rock.

SUL DIVANO

2007 05 14
PROTESTA ART. vol.3 (otra invitacion desde Alemania)

No será mucho??...

Gracias nuevamente.

CAPTAIN CHEESE-BEARD & THE 7 SISTERS OF PREVENTION

  • cpt. cheese-beard & the 7 sisters of prevention: s/t
        (2007, dvdr-demo, belgium, private release)
    • Cpt. Cheese-Beard & The 7 Sisters Of Prevention is a belgian band, that performs the music of Frank Zappa.
Earlier this year, the band video-taped a rehearsal and put the recording on a DVDR to use as a promotional little dittie. I was quite impressed. Not in the least because it's a nine piece band, which adds some nice colours and textures to the sound.
In the meantime, 2 saxophone players have joined the band, making the total a stunning 11 musicians:
      • Didier Demeestere: drums
      • Pascal Hauben: bass
      • Sara Corsius: keyboard
      • Johan De Coninck Corsius: guitar & voice
      • Rojah Lao: vocals
      • Vanessa Spy 007: very dynamic backing vocals
      • Katja Maes: melodic percussion
      • Antje De Groef: flute
      • Thomas Van Gelder: alto & soprano sax
      • Kristof Kerremans: sax
      • Ludovic Jean-Mart: sax
    • I, for one, am very thrilled to find out what they will sound like next Friday, as they will be performing in Brussels.
You'll need a damn good excuse if you won't see you there...

ARROGANT MOP

I added a couple of nice pictures to the "Arrogant Mop" bootleg entry: both the black vinyl edition and the limited blue vinyl (with a different cover) have been added.

CROSSFIRE PUBLICATIONS

The Crossfire Publications website says:

NEW: Two CDs by former Mothers members, Don Preston's "Vile Foamy Ectoplasm" and Bunk Gardner's "It's All Bunk!", are now available. A collection of Don Preston's more classical pieces, "Works", is available for advance orders. Please see the individual CD pages and the order form for more information.

Also coming in the summer is a series of CDs recorded at Paul Buff's Pal Studios, covering 1957 to 1964. Some of the many unreleased and extremely rare tracks will feature Frank Zappa, who learned how to run a recording studio from Paul Buff. This is the first authorized release of this highly prized material, drawn from Buff's master mixdown tapes and reference discs. More details soon.

Jimmy Carl Black's "When Do We Get Paid?" is also available now.

http://www.crossfirepublications.com/

Greg Russo adds:

CDBaby has Don's CD, and they should be getting Bunk's CD by the end of next week.  Another of Don's CDs, "Works," is probably going to be the next one.  Very few people have the one he sold at shows a few years ago.  I'm going to be banging them out one after the other!  This is not to mention Paul Buff's book and JCB's book as well as a completely unrelated book that I'm finishing up on The Mamas & The Papas.

Paul Buff and I are working out the details of our series.  There will be at least 6 CDs of Pal Studios recordings (some with FZ), and maybe just as many CDs of his Original Sound recordings.  Very exciting.

THE KENEALLIST: May 9 2007: REISSUES OUT NOW!

Hat. and Dust Speck reissues now exist for reals! Available in handy single-CD edition, as well as deluxe signed and numbered CD/DVD configurations for the adventurous.

No, that's not the sound of hell freezing over-- it's the sound of multitudes of delighted MK fans brushing off their antiquated CD and DVD playing devices, to enjoy the embarrassment of riches offered by these luscious reissues.

"These are some of the best reissues I've ever seen. THIS is how reissues should be done." --- blogcritics.org

People from here to there are drooling over the loving attention paid to detail with these releases-- the reconstruction of original art elements, the new liner notes which fill in gaps in the story, the wildly interesting and fun DVD material, the super-high quality remastering of the CDs, the extra music restored to hat. and on and on. Go to alt.music.mike-keneally on Usenet, or http://www.myspace.com/mikekeneally and check out the happy testimonials from happy testy moaners.

Then, get thee to www.moosemart.com for a rocking good time ordering these sweet items. Make great Mother's Day gifts, I'm told!

New sounds at RadioKeneally.com

Scott has just loaded the reunion tracks recorded by Doug Lunn, Toss Panos and myself for the reissue DVDs into the RadioKeneally playlist, along with the menu music I created for both DVDs (a cappella versions of the hat. songs for the hat. menus, guitar-only recordings for the "Dust Speck" songs). The reunion tracks are requestable from the handy RadioKeneally request form-a-rama.

WHAT'S NEW IN BERLIN

Well, I've never been to Berlin...

It's on my list of places I want to visit. I just never made it over there.

And now they're going to rename Street Number 13 into the "Frank Zappa Strasse". In July.

Luc, who recently visited Berlin, showed me where the street is located. The picture below shows the Marzahn and the Hellersdorf district. The Frank Zappa Strasse will be located where the circle-mark is. The picture on the right is the Zoom In.

" The gig is CHEAP at $5 but donations encouraged/welcomed. Also on the bill are my dear buddies from PROJECT/OBJECT - Robbie "seahag" Mangano and Jordan Shapiro and the great Eric Roth. Details of their Madness abound, below.

What music(s) are we playing with CBS?
Well--it's a trio with some friends I just did some recording with -

HEAR/BUY my recent CD or tracks at itunes.com or itsaboutmusic.net - just search "cholmondeley" on either one
We're gonna dig into some live miles/aphex twin influenced spacey modern electronica-jazz with guitar, synth, bass and processed trumpet to improvise modern electronic jazz ....look out for our recent recordings to hit the web and/or a CD somewhere.
It's strange and a lot of fun glue-ing together all the influences.. but before we perform - you MUST see...

Eric Roth Soul Review - 9:00 PM

The Eric Roth Soul Review plays a high-energy dance-able firestorm, complete with incendiary lyrics, heightening the drama of this music theater machine. Eric Roth is awesome and jewish--- a composition teacher at the brooklyn college of music, wrote the most killa intricate tunes for these subjects. The shit is really funny and also really dope. The musicians (bass, drums, keys, and two saxophones--that's right, NO GUITAR) will be "eyes glued on the sheet music" for these tunes cause this is intense like a roadmap through iraq" Eric Roth - lead vocals, kazoo, percussion

ED SEEMAN

"frank zappa & the original mothers of invention 1967 - 1969"

a film by ed seeman

The backside of the album explains it all:

"This 40 minute film is a small portion of the 14 hours of film footage I shot during the two years that I collaborated with Frank Zappa in the late 60's on a film we called "Uncle Meat".
I had hired Frank to score a 30 second TV commercial I was animating for "Luden's Cough Drops".
We then filmed for 6 months at the Garrick Theater in Greenwich Village where he had a steady gig.
This evolved into a relationship that took me on tour with the Mothers to London and Amsterdam.
Since Frank didn't see an immediate end to the filming, I sold him the footage and created this 40 minute psychedelic impressionistic version of my years with the original Mothers of Invention.

All the filming was shot without sound which I later scored with Zappa's Music."

You really need to see this. This is great. And there's 14 hours like this in Zappa's vault.  Wowie Zowie...

Essential material. Order your copy today !!

Vacation Vibrations
Let's think summer, OK?  Nothing like a nice cold beer in the summer.  How about a nice cold German beer?  In Germany?   This summer, Project/Object is thrilled to return to the lovely city of Bad Doberan in Germany for the 18th annual Zappanale, the great gathering of Appliantologists and Dental Floss Tycoons August 2-5 that celebrates FZ's life, music, and "conceptual continuity".

The Zappanale features Zappa tribute bands, former Zappa band members, and other musicians and performance artists with kindred styles and interests from all over the world. Thomas Dippel, president Germany's Arf-Society, the non-profit group behind the Zappanale, describes the event: "Unlike a lot of festivals, the Zappanale is designed as a complete Zappa experience, not just a parade of bands. The atmosphere on the festival grounds is every bit as important as what happens on stage. The whole city of Bad Doberan accommodates the festival, from our honorary member Mayor Polzin to the café waitresses in the town square."

We'll be there, of course, with our spiritual leader Ike Willis.  Also representing the USofA will be longtime Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman with his group, the Don Preston Akashic Ensemble, and new friends Kimono Draggin'.
European bands scheduled are French big band Le Bocal, Italy's I Virtuosi Dal Pianeta Talento, Team Zappa from Norway, Zappatronix from Switzerland, Polish progressive metal band Indukti, Space Debris from Denmark, Germany's own Trigon, and more.

If you would like to come see us at the Zappanale and have an "absolutely Zappa" summer vacation, sign up for " Farther Oblivion Tour 2007".  Tour company Vacation Vibrations is offering a package that will take you to the festival and other Zappa-related sights and ceremonies in Berlin and Prague.
The fun begins in Berlin on July 27. You'll tour the city, and attend an extraordinary event on July 28th when the city of Berlin formally renames a street as "Frank-Zappa-Strasse". This will be the first street in Germany named for a rock star, and the first street in the world named for Frank Zappa. The dedication will be followed by live music and a little party. (Zappa fans in Berlin on a Saturday night -- should be a quiet little affair.)
From Berlin the tour will proceed to Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Did you know that FZ holds a special place in Czech history?  Former Czech president Vaclav Havel called Zappa 'one of the gods of the Czech underground' for his uncompromising belief in freedom of thought and expression. Frank's music, smuggled in and enjoyed at risk of imprisonment, inspired people to resist totalitarianism.  That spirit lives on today.
After enjoying Prague, it's back up to Bad Doberan for the Zappanale.  Arf-Society's Thomas Dippel comments, "For over fifteen years we've maintained close contact with our American fans; we're thrilled that Vacation Vibrations has now put together an organized Frank Zappa excursion."   When you "get on the bus" for Farther Oblivion, you will also be part of an exclusive get-together with Ike!  Tour operator Scott Tepper says, "We are honored that Ike has graciously offered to spend time with our group." Ike will share memories of times with Zappa and the band in the studio, on the road, and just one-on-one, and answer questions. The exact timing of that event will be announced closer to the tour date.   Tour participants who want to continue their vacation after the Zappanale can book an optional 3-night extension to Amsterdam, another awesome city with legendary nightlife that is also devoted to independent thinking and freedom of expression.

Vacation Vibrations is a division of American International Tour Groups, a group tour operator  specializing in customized group trips since 1990. American International's founder and CEO Sam Schlossberg says, "Vacation Vibrations' Farther Oblivion Tour 2007 is another example of what we are so good at: planning trips to meet the needs of groups with a very specialized interest. As always, people on our trip will have a great time!"
For more information about the tour, visit www.freewebs.com/fartheroblivion , email Scott Tepper at VacationVibrations@Gmail.com , or call him at 617-721-7996.

JOHN TRUBEE

2007 05 04

Trubee says:

A bunch of ex-employees from my old job were spamming e-mails back and forth among us to organize coffee klatches and such. They titled the e-mails "AHS Victims". I really dislike the word "victims", especially if I was supposed to be included in that group.

It motivated me to compose the rant below. I really like it. It spewed my guts. So now I feel compelled to foist it on you for fun.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Words, even single words, are essential to how we
conceptualize the world and ourselves. Words possess
incredible power for both positive and negative thought.

Mindful of this, I modestly propose we henceforth refer
to ourselves as AHS SURVIVORS or AHS VICTORS.
We possessed the chutzpah and fortitude to persevere
even while those pathetic corporate vampires began
to cannibalize our company/workplace/jobs to amass
the material to sew golden parachutes for themselves
at our expense.

Who is stronger? Those who daily slug it out in the lowly
workaday trenches bearing the eternal struggles and humiliations
characteristic of working men and women---or the candyass,
spoiled weakling corporate putzes bailing out with their golden
parachutes and hefty commissions for selling off the company,
who'd collapse like rare, precious flowers if they were
ever required to spend a single day humbly trudging in our shoes?

No, we are SURVIVORS or VICTORS or UNDEFEATED or
whatever powerful, plural noun you can think of to express
our MOXIE in the face of STUPID CORPORATE DOWNSIZING
ADVERSITY.

We were FIRED for their GREED.

We did everything we were supposed to do.
THEY are the ones who FAILED.

We are strong. They are weak.
We go on. They cashed out like spoiled prostitutes.

Please O Please excise that pathetic, unfortunate word "victim".
When used with those of us who worked at AHS it makes
me feel like I'm a missing child whose picture is on a carton of milk
and that I must scour the dairy case at Safeway to go find myself.

"Victim" is a really awful word to use to conceptualize oneself.
It's even filthier than words I sometimes find scrawled
on restroom walls. Ugh!

It's the world's work to beat us down, to make us think
little of ourselves, to con us into self-abnegating ourselves
into obscure hovels far from the light, to humble us,
to make us feel small and weak and powerless and invisible
and submissive and worthless.

We ought never to cooperate with the world in this sordid
campaign. We ought to ever ferociously rage back with all
the vitriol, fury, and courage we can possibly muster.

It begins with words and how we use them.

MOTHERS ON MOJO SAMPLER

  • various artists: mojo stooges jukebox
        (2007, cd, uk, mojo magazine)
    • The April issue of Mojo magazine included a "Stooges Jukebox" album, a collection of songs compiled for Mojo by Iggy Pop. Lots of nice material: early rock 'n' roll, early funk with Dennis Coffey, surf with Link Wray, early blues with Howlin' Wolf, Junior Kimbrough and John Lee Hooker.
The reason that I'm mentioning this disc, is because of track 12: The Mothers Of Invention with 'Help, I'm A Rock'.
In all a great selection. This dics will stay in my car the next couple of days.

2007 05 01

Cpt. Cheese-Beard & the 7 Sisters of Prevention

Belgian band Cpt. Cheese-Beard & the 7 Sisters of Prevention plays the music of Frank Zappa.

from their bio:
"The "Cpt.CHEESE-BEARD & THE 7 SISTERS OF PREVENTION" ensemble was formed by Johan De Coninck in May 2006 after a year of pondering whether the whole project was actually feasible and worth all the trouble managing a production of this size. It was very surprising that finding musicians who are technically good enough to play Zappa's music, and motivated enough to take part in this enterprise was actually not all that difficult. Most of them saw it as a challenge to master these songs and developed a great appreciation for the source material by analyzing and playing it.

The basic idea when we started of was just to go for it with a basic Rock formation (Didier: Drums, Pascal: Bass, Johan: Guitar & voice, Sara: Keyboard & Rojah: vocals) and see where we would end up. As soon as we mastered the basics of a selection of tracks we started to look for people to complete the line up. Melodic Percussion, Flute, Horns and Backing Vocals.

By the time we found Katja, Ansje, Vanessa and Thomas, the core band had been practising for a few months and started to develop a grooving sound which was now enriched by all these new sounds really opening up the sonic spectrum.

We recently welcomed Kristof Kerremans and Ludovic Jean-Mart joining the group. Both saxophone players, they add extra power and harmony creating a very rich sound."

The picture on the right was taken during their concert in Melsele.

You can watch some video clips of a rehearsal at:

VPRO GIDS

  • vpro gids 16
        (2007/04, mag, nl)
    • Issue number 16 of the dutch VPRO gids (radio & tv guide) has Frank Zappa on the cover. This, because of last weeks "Zappa Week" on dutch VPRO television.

The cover of this issue was made by Cal Schenkel !!

The two page article inside by Gijsbert Kamer talks about the documentary that VPRO showed in two parts: "A Pioneer of the Future of Music" (by Frank Scheffer).

So the Scheffer documentaries couldn't be shown on the internet or sattelite TV, but they were broadcast on Dutch television.

Saturday April 21 till Saturday April 28 2007

From Saturday April 21 until Saturday April 28 Holland Doc shines the spotlight on musical genius Frank Zappa. Besides unique film material Holland Doc will also broadcast radio documentaries on the composer and rock-artist Zappa on its website: www.hollandoc.nl/zappa.

The reason behind this tribute is the documentary Frank Zappa - A pioneer of the future of music part I & II, recently made by Dutch documentary filmmaker Frank Scheffer.

Along with part I of A pioneer of the future of music, Holland Doc will show the two famous documentaries Roelof Kiers made in 1971: Zappa and Frank Zappa films 200 Motels, and the documentary The Present-day Composer refuses to die, made by Frank Scheffer in 2000. For the real hardcore fans of Frank Zappa, Holland Doc will also present an episode of the pop program Wonderland, that hasn't been broadcasted since 1976. In this episode director Charles Leeuwenkamp follows two illustrious ex-band members of Zappa's "Mothers of Invention", Mark Volman en Howard Kaylan, alias Flo & Eddie during a sightseeing tour in Hollywood.

On the site www.hollanddoc.nl/zappa, Holland Doc will broadcast a Zappa concert that took place during the summer of 1970 which was aired in the classic VPRO show Piknik. On the website we also present the Supplement Tape, made by Co de Kloet in 1990 as a tribute to Zappa's fiftieth birthday and his four hour 'Freakoutshow', in which he interviews rock journalists and musicians who worked with Zappa.

THE FRANK ZAPPA STRASSE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 2007 04 23

Berlin to Name Street for Frank Zappa

Berlin, Germany - April 23, 2007 The city of Berlin will bestow a unique honor on a unique figure in modern music on July 28th when a street is renamed in memory of American rock and roll legend Frank Zappa. In the Marzahn district of what was East Berlin, "Street Number 13" will be formally dedicated as "Frank-Zappa-strasse". The ceremony will take place at the ORWOhaus, a former photographic film plant on the street that is now home to a musicians' collective. It will be the first street in Germany named for a rock musician, and the first street in a world capital named for Frank Zappa.

The members of ORWOhaus themselves proposed the street naming. What motivated a group of young German musicians to honor an American musical icon? Andreas Otto, spokesperson for ORWOhaus, explains, "Frank Zappa was one of the best all-around musicians in the world, as a guitarist, composer, and band-leader. He was celebrated for his uncompromising pursuit of musical exploration and excellence, and also for his courage using his music and lyrics to make society see its faults and hypocrisies. He didn't do it just for media attention, it was part of his highly creative and unbending character. He stood up to his own government against politically-motivated censorship - he testified with great intelligence in the US Congress, and he refused to hold back his own outrageous sense of humor. We of ORWOhaus had our own battles trying to save an unused building and turn it into an active music center, and we decided that Zappa was a great example of how a musician can have an influence so far beyond the notes on a page. We hope Frank would be proud to have his name as an address for so many musicians."

Zappa's work had notable sociopolitical influence in Berlin, a city that had a physical wall between the philosophies of capitalist democracy and communist one-party government. US tour operator Scott Tepper is running a trip this summer that features the Berlin street naming and the 18th annual Zappanale, a festival in Bad Doberan, Germany, celebrating Zappa's music and life. He points out, "Frank Zappa was incredibly popular in the Soviet bloc, even though his recordings had to be smuggled in, and anyone caught listening to them risked punishment. Zappa represented absolute freedom of thought and expression, since he often satirized his own society and government. He inspired people all over Eastern Europe to keep hoping for their own free societies." Tepper adds that while some might credit Ronald Reagan with winning the Cold War, there are two statues honoring Frank Zappa in the former Soviet bloc: one in Vilnius , the capital of Lithuania, and one in Bad Doberan. Ther are currently no statues honoring Reagan. According to Tepper, the street naming in Berlin reinforces Zappa's status as a champion of real American freedom."

The street dedication July 28th will be followed by free live music outside the ORWOhaus, and by an indoor reception later that evening. For scheduling and ticket information, contact ORWOhaus.

VACATION VIBRATIONS GOES ZAPPANALE

FZ Europe vacation tour and music festival July 27 - August 6!

Each summer for the past 18 years, Zappaphiles from all over have migrated to the northern German town of Bad Doberan for the Zappanale, a festival devoted to the music and conceptual continuity of FZ. Now your summer vacation can be an absolutely Zappa experience.

Our good friends at Arf Society, the German non-profit group that organizes the Zappanale, passed this along to us, and we thought we would share it.

Vacation Vibrations, a Boston-based tour operator, is pleased to announce

Farther Oblivion Tour 2007

a tour package that will bring FZ fans to that great worldwide annual gathering in Germany of Appliantologists and Dental Floss Tycoons.

The tour begins in Berlin on July 27, 2007. The group will tour the city, and attend an extraordinary event, when "Street Number 13" will be formally dedicated as "Frank-Zappa-Strasse", the first street in the world named for FZ. The dedication will be followed by music for the rest of the day, and a late "chill-party" that is sure to exemplify Berlin's legendary nightlife.

From Berlin the tour will proceed to Prague. Prague is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but FZ holds a special place in Czech history. Former Czech president Vaclav Havel called Zappa "one of the gods of the Czech underground" for his uncompromising belief in freedom of thought and expression, and that spirit lives on.

After enjoying Prague, the tour will head to the northern German town of Bad Doberan for the 18th annual Zappanale, a three-day festival of Zappa tribute bands, former Zappa band members, and other musicians and performance artists with kindred styles and interests from all over the world. The Zappanale is designed as a complete Zappa experience, with the atmosphere on the festival grounds every bit as important as what happens on stage. The whole town gets into the fun, from the café waitstaff in the town square to the mayor himself.

Headlining Zappanale 18 will be the Terry Bozzio Out Trio. (Terry Bozzio - need we say more?) Other US groups will be the prodigies from Philadelphia's Paul Green School Of Rock, the renowned Project/Object, and the Don Preston Akashic Ensemble (Don Preston - one of the Mothers of all Mothers!) So far, the line-up will also include French big band Le Bocal, Italy's Orchestra Spaziale, Team Zappa from Norway, Zappatronix from Switzerland, and three Danish bands- Octafish, Space Debris, and Trigon.

The tour group will be deposited back at the Berlin airport on August 6th, totally plooked out of their brains from music, "cities and beer", and lots of fun. Did you say you want some more-a? Tour participants who want to continue their vacation after the Zappanale can book an optional tour extension to Amsterdam, another awesome city with legendary nightlife that is also devoted to independent thinking and freedom of expression.

Vacation Vibrations is a division of American International Tour Groups, a group tour operator with 15 years of experience specializing in customized group trips. Whether you are an experienced traveler, or this will be your first international trip, they'll make sure you have an absolutely amazing time.

For more information, you can visit their web site: www.freewebs.com/fartheroblivion . If you have any questions, you can contact them at VacationVibrations@Gmail.com , or call 617-721-7996.

See you in Bad Doberan!
