  • nasal retentive orchestra: tales of brave flegmar
        (2003, cd, fr, pickaboo nro 003)
    • The third album by the Nasal Retentive Orchestra has all the madness that one should expect from them.
      It is called "Tales Of Brave Flegmar", and that's also the name of the opera that takes up most of the disc. A bizarre story about Flegmar, his bride Petula, the italian speaking Pope and a bunch of other weirdos. A tribute to Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Henry Purcell and Frank Zappa, with music from Metzger, Presley, Boisseau, Zappa, and others.
      Besides this piece, the album also includes various (other) Frank Zappa compositions: 'absolutely free', 'uncle meat', holiday in berlin' and 'the air'.
    • If the Mothers had lived in France, they would have sounded like the NRO.  Highly recommended.

    •  Dutch Zappa (re)coverband The Foolz recorded this album june, 2002.  Two nights in a row, the band recorded the concert at the 'Bluescafé' in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands). "Live in the Cherrytree" is the result. An all Zappa album, with classics like:
      heavy duty judy * keep it greasy * tryin' to grow a chin * dancin' fool * city of tiny lites * zoot allures * the torture never stops * why does it hurt when i pee? * drafted again * more trouble every day * inca roads * peaches en regalia * tell me you love me * bamboozled by love.
      This is a very fine album. If you're into bands that play Zappa's music, this record should be on your shelf.
      The album cover also asks: "Will the next recording be on the Zappanale # 15 ?".  Well, the repertoire is a bit predictable, but they do a good job, so they have my vote !

    • Part four of Steve Vai's 10-cd "The Secret Jewel Box" has been released.
      It's an excellent disc, presenting tracks that were released on the japanese albums as bonus tracks, and a bunch of promotional songs for korg, roland and the bad horsie wah wah pedal. It als features Frank Zappa's 'sofa', as released on the "Zappa's Universe" album.

        (2003, cd, usa, light without heat lwh 1004-2)
    • And here's part 5 of the same series. Only halfway, and already essential.
      This disc offers songs that Steve has contributed to other artist's albums. Whitesnake, PIL, Bisonette, the fabulous Bob Harris and more.  True, some of us have these original albums so I hear you ask: "What's new?". And I have to say that, to me, the album only presented two or three new tracks as well, but it looks good and it sounds great, and to me, that's good enough.
