Candy Zappa signs her book :
"My Brother Was a Mother:
  A Zappa Family Album"

On Saturday, May 24th, 2003, from 5pm-7pm at Borders Book Store
located at 1360 Westwood Bl. in Westwood, CA.

Candy Zappa will read from and sign her new book and event host Jim Cohen, will give readings from Nigey Lennon’s revised book, “Being Frank: My Time With Frank Zappa”.  There will also be music featuring the “Once A Legacy” group.  The group consists of Leslie Baker on bass, Bill Fulton on keys, Marc Van Aken on drums, Patrick DeHart on sax.  We are both pleased and privileged to have the excellent Ms. Baker and Mr. Fulton with us again, as they have been for our two other shows, and welcome Mr. Van Aken to our group.  We are also very honored to have Ike Willis with us.  Ike’s amazing guitar playing talent and vocal gifts were recognized by Frank Zappa, when Ike was twenty-one and was hired in 1978, staying for ten wonderful, story filled years. The two leading members and founders of “Once A Legacy” are Candy Zappa and Nolan Porter, on vocals.

Nolan Porter recorded two albums in the early seventies, “NOLAN” and on “Nolan, No Apologies” with three of the early Mothers of Invention: Jimmy Carl Black, Roy Estrada and Lowell George.  Nolan’s music is being played in England and is a favorite in several dance clubs.  His rocking  “If I Could Only Be Sure” is on a compilation CD, sporting his young face on the cover, with other early soul hits from other R&B groups of that time.  His early singing style was hard to peg because Nolan sounded more classical, but he adapted to the rock sound easily.  His mellow soulful sound is a favorite with his audiences.

Candy Zappa has been singing, writing and playing guitar since she was eleven years old.  Frank would listen to her songs and tell her to “get to work” and eventually the work paid off.  She now favors the blues/ jazz bent of music.  She played in several bands in the 80’s, her own and others. In the 90’s performed in Las Vegas with various local bands, including “Capone”, “The Earl Turner Review”, and “Powerhouse” and in 2001 with New York based Zappa cover band, Ed Palermo’s Big Band and Project Object.  She also guested at the Zappanale in Germany last year.
