Just a quick one...

PURPLE BRAIN

  • purple brain: softening?
        (1989, k7, nl, private release)

    • Remco Takken was kind enough to send me a copy of this tape from 1989 (!!).
The first recordings of a bunch of young Dutch guys, including Zappa's 'Let's Make The Water Turn Black' and 'Absolutely Free'.
A great addition to the UM archive.

MARCO KALNENEK

Going through some boxes with tapes, I came accross this little tape from around 1992:

ROY ESTRADA

  • The July / August 2005 Issue of Bass Guitar Magazine (Issue 19) features an excellent 3-page article on / interview with Roy Estrada.

THE MAGIC BAND

  • the magic band: live in concert & crow's milk
        (2004, dvd, uk, subdiva)

    • OK, so this is a bit of catching up. The Magic Band has been touring the UK and they just released a new album, with a bonus DVD.
A good enough reason to add last year's DVD to their discography.

The "Live In Concert" part shows the 2003/04/07 concert at the 'Shepherds Bush Empire' in London, UK. Fabulous concert. I had heard an audience recording of this show, so I knew what to expect, but actually seeing the guys performing all the material is just great. Wish I'd been there.

"Crow's Milk" is a reunion documentary, narrated by the late John Peel.

      This is great stuff.
Now when that new album due out?

More info soon.

June 26, 2005
And more tomorrow. Talk again to you real soon.

KLIMPEREI

Klimperei has a new album out. Some will probably call this minimal, experimental, childish or even neo-classical toy music, but others will say that this is just what they needed.

CUCCURULLO BRILLO BRULLO

June 19, 2005, Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo presented their first album at the 'Flora Theater' in Delft, NL.
The disc that is pictured on the right was sent out as a promotional dittie for both the concert & the new album. It features two tracks:  'Hot Plate Heaven' and 'Stinkfoot'.
I have to admit that I hadn't been sure about driving all the way up to Delft, but after a quick listen I didn't have a choice...

The concert was great. I had seen the band on a couple of occasions already (mostly opening for the Muffin Men), but they never sounded this good.
Very impressive.

  • cuccurullo brillo brullo: zapzurditiez
        (2005, cd, nl, pmp records)

    • Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo is a Dutch band that plays the music of Frank Zappa. "Zapzurdities" is their first album. It's something that I had been waiting for, for years. Whenever I saw the band live, they always impressed me by the fine vocal work and the superb rhythm 'n' blues approach by guitar player Derk Groen.
This here album shows that the band has gone further then that. Paul de Jong has made some major steps in his fusion-like playing, and the addition of Boris Vanderlek's saxophone gives the band an extra pulse.

There are a lot of bands that play Zappa's music, but only a handful of them will show you how it should be done.
      Essential stuff.

    • Order it from your local Zappa dealer, or directly from
      www.cuccurullobrillobrullo.com.

    • See them live at Zappanale. (with special guest Ike Willis on vocals !!)

BORIS VANDERLEK

Boris Vanderlek who is featured in this newsletter as the saxophone player for Cucurullo Brillo Brullo has a new solo album out. Boris started his career playing tenor sax alongside Arnett Cobb, Buddy Tate and Hans Dulfer. You might also know him for playing with the late Herman Brood.
His new album is called "Blue And Sentimental" and is out on A-Records / Challenge Records.

MONICA ZETTERLUND

Swedish jazz singer and actrice Monica Zetterlund recorded Frank Zappa's 'Toads Of The Short Forest' in 1971.

She died in the fire that destroyed her appartement on May 12, 2005. She had worked and recorded with Arne Domnerus, Bill Evans, Zoot Sims and the Tad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra.

CHRIS OPPERMAN: CONCEPTS OF NON-LINEAR TIME

  • chris opperman: concepts of non-linear time
(2004, cd, usa, purple cow records pcr  004)

    • "Concepts Of Non-Linear Time" is Chris Opperman's latest album. Or as the liner notes say: "This album is dedicated to everyone who has played or performed my music in the past, present and future."

This is one great album. It's contemporary, modern music, combining very fine compostions with superb playing. If you are familiar with Opperman's previous albums, you will probably be glad to hear that the grand piano still is the main instrument on this album. Chris' playing is astonishing. Just listen to 'The Saddle Ranch' where he (and Mike Keneally) will you take for a rodeo ride, using various rhythmic and melodic elements. Beautiful.
My favourite tracks are 'The Walls Are Coming Down' and 'Dora's Aura', both featuring excellent vibraphone work by Ben Adams.
Mini-Moog fans on the other hand, and who isn't one, will be glad to hear that Marc Ziegenhagen is also present. He does some rather psychedelic things on 'Reviving Aeris'. I've been playing this album for over a week, and surprised every time I listen to it.

    • Highly recommended.

GUY DAROL & DOMINIQUE JEUNOT

  • zappa de z à a

by guy darol et dominique jeunot
        (2005, book, france, castor astral)

    • In 2000, Castor Astral published a book by Guy Darol and Dominique Jeunot, called "Zappa de Z à A", a sort of Zappa dictionary, using keywords to make excursions through the Zappa universe.
Let me give you a couple of entries as an example: The Vacuum-Cleaner, Billy The Mountain, New York, Nicolas Slonimsky, Churches, The Big Note, ...

All, as you might expect, in reverse alphabetical order, with cross-links and references to the various Zappa albums, movies, interviews or concerts.

As the book had been out-of-print for a while already, Castor Astral decided to republish it.
"Zappa de Z à A" has been revised and completed and is a must-have. If you can read French, you should not hesitate.
      Preface by Ben Watson.

    • ISBN: 2-85920-611-6
      distributed by Volumen
      or check your local Zappa-dealer

FROGGIE CAMARENA

Robert 'Froggie' Camarena was kind enough to send me a couple of corrections / additions to his entry in UM.

In 2004, he released an album called "Camarena - Summer Just Came To My Barrio". Scheduled for release shortly is his second solo album, called "Familia".
And in the meantime he is preparing a tribute album "Tribute To Ruben & The Jets".

THE KENEALLIST, JUNE 13, 2005

THE KENEALLIST, June 13, 2005: Final Five Guitar Therapy Shows!

Mike Keneally Band's
GUITAR THERAPY TOUR!
featuring
  • Mike Keneally: guitar, keyboards, vocals
  • Rick Musallam: guitar, vocals
  • Bryan Beller: bass
  • Joe Travers: drums

Hey there, friends…

MK checking in from the road, driving to Buffalo at the moment. We're on the home stretch of the Guitar Therapy Tour, and we'd love to see bunches of you at the remaining shows. The band seems to be at a performance peak right now—several of the folks who came to the Cincinnati gig said it was the best show they'd ever seen in their lives, so there's that.

Alex Skolnick Trio is opening the final four shows, which is going to be a real treat. And after this tour, Bryan Beller and Joe Travers are going away for a long time to play Zappa music, so dammit, now's the time, baby.

We'd especially love to have you at the Sellersville, PA show this Saturday night, which we're taping for a DVD release (and we ask that there not be any audience taping or flash photography at that show, please).

And it would just be nice to see you. So come to our show, and let us bring you the rock.

We love you,

--MK and The Boyz

MARZI NYMAN & THE ESTONIAN DREAM BIG BAND

Earlier this month, I mentioned the Zappa tribute concert by Marzi Nyman and the Estonian Dream Big Band. In the meantime, I've heard a recording of their 2005/03/11 concert and I'm still shaking... Excellent concert.
The picture below shows Marzi Nyman (and part of the Estonian Dream Big Band) in action.

YO MILES!

  • henry kaiser & wadada leo smith: yo miles! : upriver
(2005, cd, usa, cuneiform records rune 201/202)

    • "Upriver" is the third Yo Miles! album, the Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith tribute to the music that Miles Davis made in the mid-70s. During this period, Miles didn't really compose entire pieces. He worked with short thematic fragments that he and his bandmembers improvised on. As Henry Kaiser said in an interview with Derk Richardson: "Do you remember what Miles used to put on some of his records during that period? It said: "Directions in Music by Miles Davis"."
It should come as no surprise that master improviser Henry Kaiser has a weak spot for this approach. Together with one of the most original and importent jazz trumpet players around, Wadada Leo Smith, Kaiser started Yo Miles! in 1998. "Upriver" is a superb album. It's hard to believe that it was recorded live and that the biggest part of this album is improvised. As if that isn't enough, the Yo Miles! band also features Mike Keneally on guitar.  Take it from me, this is excellent stuff.

FROGG CAFE

  • frogg café: fortunate observer of time
        (2005, cd, usa, progrock records)

    • The Frogg Café concert at last years Zappanale was one of the highlights of the festival.
"Fortunate Observer Of Time" is their latest album, and it sure rocks. A very powerful rhythm section combined with jazzy melodies and phrases. "Fortune Observer Of Time" presents some very fine compositions. Combined with the excellent musicianship and vocal work that is displayed by Frogg Café, you get prog rock at its best.

      Essential listening.

And I didn't even mention that Ed Mann is featured as special guest on 'Abyss Of Dissension'.

ZAPPA ON ESTONIAN RADIO

A word with Avo Raup:

For years I have had the possibility to play Frank Zappa (and related) music on the radio. The Estonian Radio (natinale public radio) has 4 programs here. One of them is Klassikaraadio. You guess it, classical radio. But here, Klassikaraadio is paying a lot of attention to contemporary music, jazz, progressive rock etc.

There a 2 weekly radio programs, where I'm participating and usually I have one 1-hour show in 2 months (or 6 shows per year).

One is Ideal Worlds (Ideaalmaailmad), a mainly progressive rock oriented program on the Saturday evenings. The 2nd is Music NOW (NYYDmuusika) on Tuesday evenings, contemporary music oriented. Usually every 1-hour program is concentrated on one album or concert.

The Ideal Worlds programs are later rebroadcast on the main 1st radio channel too. That's the most popular radio in Estonia. I think that the Hot Rats show that I made in november 2003 has, until now, been rebroadcast 5 times!

This year I have had
1. Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (Ideal Worlds, Jan). The hardest task I ever had in radio. How to present this masterpiece on the 1st listening and not to scare people.

2. Ensemble Modern - Greggery Peccary (Music NOW, Feb)

My next program will be aired this Saturday. It's Weasels Ripped My Flesh. In the end of this hour I will add Marzi Nyman & EDBB - Toads of the Short Forest. This is the 1st time that part of that concert will be aired.

Klassikaraadio you can listen online too, RealAudio or Windows Media.

PRESENT

  • present: a great inhumane adventure
(2005, cd, usa, cuneiform records rune 207)

    • Roger Trigaux formed Present in 1979, after having played with Univers Zero for about five years. The group disbanded somewhere in the mid-eighties, but resurfaced in the early nineties.
"A Great Inhumane Adventure" is the latest album by Present, and it's a mighty fine one. Present plays what one might call European Progressive Rock. (They're from Brussels.) Very intense, with lots of tempo changes, but with repeating lines and frases, what makes it an absolute joy to listen to.

      Highly recommended!

CUCURULLO BRILLO BRULLO

Cucurullo Brillo Brullo, the Dutch band that plays the music of Frank Zappa, will be releasing their debut album next week!

Here's the promotional info:

Pardon Music Promotions is proud to announce the completion of the long-awaited 1st CD of the Dutch continuous conceptual project, Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo. This CD, called “Zapzurdities”, will be presented on June 19th in the Flora Theater, Verwersdijk 1, in Delft, The Netherlands. Doors open at: 15.00 hours; Concert: 15.30 hours

You are invited to come and watch and listen to a band that manages to keep alive the music of lyricist, composer, guitarist, critic, satirist, conductor and the Groucho Marx of Rock & Roll, Frank Zappa, retaining at the same time their own characteristics, interpretation and approach as well as their subtle arrangements with just a touch of rhythm & blues.

Cuccurullo Brillo Brullo makes Frank Zappa’s music accessible to a wider audience and the musical aptitude, the sparkling enthusiasm, the sheer enjoyment and the unprecedented chemistry on stage make a concert of this Zappian ensemble a feast for those who love a healthy dose of inspiring music.

“Fresh, surprising, impressive, sublime, a completely new sound, overwhelming, spacious” These are just some of the reactions the CD has met with so far. Producer Reinier Parengkuan: “We had a great time recording these tunes. The vibes within the band were inspiring, the studio was a floating carpet and Frits van Mourik, the engineer & mixer, proved a wonderful person to work with and Paul de Jong did a superb job mixing & mastering.” We hope you will enjoy the album…. as much as we do. And we hope to see you on June the 19th in Delft or on August 5th at The Zappanale#16, 4-7th august 2005, Bad Doberan, Germany, or at one of our concerts in the near future”

And don't forget to check out their fabulous web-site at www.cuccurullobrillobrullo.com.

DAVE PIKE SET

Charles Ulrich added a bit of info for the coverversion freaks:

The 1994 2-CD Ossiach Live was apparently an Italian (bootleg) re-release of a 1971 3-LP set (BASF 49 21119-3).

    • This album was originally issued on CD as "Swiss Cheese At The Festhalle Basel In 1974" with a label that said "FZ".
That album got rereleased earlier this year in a '24 bit remastered' version with the same, original cover but with a different label ("ZFT").
And now there's a third version: a limited, numbered re-release of the 24 bit remastered verstion, but with a new cover, and a slightly changed title...

  • zappa / beefheart / mothers: bongo fury in el paso in 1975
        (2005, 2cd-bootleg, fztep03/04)

    • Same story here:

An album and two boots. How about that for a Tuesday.

THE RESIDENTS

The Residents have re-released their out-of-print "Live at the Fillmore" album. In case you don't already have it, here's your chance.

GEORGE WINSTON: MONTANA - A LOVE STORY

  • george winston: montana - a love story
        (2004, cd, usa, bmg 82876 62042-2)

    • "Montana - A Love Story" is a beautiful album. Solo piano. You have to be in the right mood for this one.
It includes Zappa's 'Little House I Used To Live In'.

FRANK ZAPPA DVD-BOOTLEG: THE YELLOW SHARK

  • frank zappa / ensemble modern: the yellow shark
        (2005, dvd-bootleg, ??, ??)

    • Another Zappa DVD bootleg has been issued. Taken from the TV-broadcast of the 1992/09/17 Ensemble Modern concert at the 'Alte Oper' in Frankfurt, Germany. Fond memories, and a very fine concert as well.

This 90-minute recording has been around in the trade-circuit on video-tape as well as on DVDR for quite a while. Still, this is a nice package...

FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEG: IN BASLE & ELSEWHERE

  • frank zappa: in basle & elsewhere
         (2005, 2cd-bootleg, germany, mmm)

    • Imagine an album with an absolute fabulous line-up. Something like: Frank Zappa, George Duke, Ruth Underwood, Tom Fowler, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Chester Thompson. Take some concert recordings, like say, Basel, Boston, and maybe even Rochester. Pick out some of the nicer songs, like the 12-minute version of 'Pojama-People', and you get a very impressive album.

If you happen to see Joe at the next Zappa tour in October / November, please remind him that there's still some work to be done in the vault...

June 6, 2005
There's lots of stuff happening, including a couple of excellent new releases.

THE PRIMETIME SUBLIME COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

  • pTsCO: songs that will never win a grammy
(2005, cd, usa, corporate blob records cbr 003)

    • Readers of UM know that I think highly of the primeTime sublime Community Orchestra. "Songs That Will Never Win A Grammy" is the third album by the pTsCO and, again, it's a mind-blowing experience. In a letter, Paul Minotto explains: "It is our 'pop' record featuring songs sung by a computer with live, orchestral occompaniment. All the vocals were created using the latest voice synthesis technology...".

Once more, it's all there: the crooners, the jazz angle, james brown, the motheresque collages, ... In short, it's New? Music. And it's hilarious from the first to the last minute.

    • You should certainly check out the pTsCO.
      This is essential stuff.

      www.primetimesublime.com

SONGS THAT WILL NEVER WIN A GRAMMY

The New pTsCO CD brought to YOU by Corporate Blob Records - 8 pop songs (and 1 instrumental) subverted beyond the commercial realm.
All the vocals were digitally manufactured with an IBM personal computer and the latest voice synthesis technology developed by AT&T and the Yamaha Corporation.
Mastering by Andy VanDette at Masterdisk Studios, New York City.

YOU GET:
- Curb Your God
The Grand Opening Number featuring 7 singers advocating the virtues of limiting the influence of one¹s External Transcendent Moral Authority. (well, maybe not)
Note the quotes: a fragment of What the World Needs Now by Burt Bacharach sung by a robot and the Ken-L-Ration Dog Food Jingle ("My Dog's Better Than Your Dog...") which occurs during the last section in the low brass.

- I Want You
A love song - a sort of pathologically obsessed recomposition beyond recognition of Billy Joel's I Love You Just The Way You Are
with Sting's Every Breath You Take. (well, maybe not)

- Betty Poptarts
The ballad of the record with contributions by Richard Nixon, Hillary Clinton, both George Bushes, a group of TV commercial announcers, some evangelist I can¹t remember the name of, Betty and Ken.
Refers to those individuals who look for paths to happiness outside of themselves in ideas of a political, religious or materialistic nature, pre-organized for effortless convenience which enables one to escape from the real issues which are within oneself.

- Lesson 1
English as a 2nd language for nonearthlings taught by native speakers.

- Dance of the Bouncing Hornballs
A kind-of-but-not-really interlude: the instrumental track of the record.

- Just Do Me Tonight
Picture if you will, a man, a lonely man who sits at the same seat in the same neighborhood bar night after night. He doesn¹t have many friends and is unable to give or receive love - a junkyard of memories and unresolved emotions. At the end of the night he "scores" with a big, boobed, blonde bimbo from Brooklyn.
Recorded live in the lounge at Murphy¹s Sea Bay Inn, Normandy Beach, New Jersey.

- Hannibal Lecter¹s BBQ
Progressive Rock so progressive it isn¹t Rock anymore.
What if Hannibal Lecter invited you over for a neighborhood barbeque one sunny, Saturday afternoon?

- Rainbow Seeds of Mass Destruction
What if Samuel Beckett wrote a screenplay for a Disney movie about a cockroach who became president?
A song of political propaganda gone awry.
The line ³Jesus was a Republican² got edited out for aesthetic, not religious or political reasons.
The 2nd half is an electronic soundscape of a nuclear fallout with TV commercial announcements. Advertising of commodities during nuclear fallout may seem absurd to most; but remember: comparable to the World Cup or the Super Bowl, Armageddon will be televised and commercial time will be very expensive.

- It Will Be Over Before Ya Know It
An inspirational song of joy and hope designed to uplift the wrinkled hearts of the masses and create eternal peace, love and understanding throughout the world and it¹s neighbors. (well, maybe not)

TWO NEW ZAPPA BOOKS IN FRANCE

Two new books on Zappa have been announced for release in June 2005 (yes, that's now!) in France:
  • ZAPPA PAR ZAPPA (l'Archipel)
by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhiogrosso
    rerelease with extra material
translation and notes by Jean-Marie Millet
    foreword by Christophe Delbrouck

  • FRANK ZAPPA ET LA DINETTE DE CHROME (Castor Astral)
    (Part 2 of the trilogy)
    by Christophe Delbrouck
    Cover illustration by Jean Solé

MONSTER 01

  • various artists: monster 01
(2005, cd, nl, de bonte koe records bk02)

    • De Bonte Koe Records (colourful cow records) is a brand-new Dutch independant record label. The label is located at the Loevenhoutsedijk in Utrecht, the same location that also houses the Rosa Ensemble and a couple of (electronic) composers. The compilation "Monster 01" presents recordings of artists that support De Bonte Koe Records: Esquire, Eggmen, the Rosa Ensemble, In Julia's Mind-Scene, and others.

The album itself is a nice mixture of contemporary compositions. Besides the "new music" pieces, (read: Murw, the Rosa Ensemble, van de Lisdonk) there's also room for a couple of tracks that could easily find their way to Studio Brussel (Belgian's alternative music station). Try Roomtone, the Eggmen or In Julia's Mind-Scene.

    • I like it a lot. De Bonte Koe records is a label that you have to check out.
      www.bontekoerecords.nl

ROSA ENSEMBLE

  • the rosa ensemble: selling hoovers in mojave
(2005, cd, nl, de bonte koe records bkr03)

    • The Rosa Ensemble has been bringing their Captain Beefheart tribute on the stage for over a year all throughout The Netherlands: performing Beefheart classics in Dutch. "Selling Hoovers In Mojave", the album, includes recordings that were made during these concerts, as well as a number of studio tracks. It's another new release on De Bonte Koe Records.

I'm quite impressed by this record. It's quite funny to hear Beefheart in Dutch, but it works. Tip to the hat to Hans Dagelet who took care of the vocals. Nice arrangements as well, with a lot of work for the trumpets & sax. I like it.
Besides the Beefheart material, the album also has some Zappa stuff ('Lumpy Gravy' & 'We Are Not Alone') and some compositions by members of the Rosa Ensemble.

    • A must-have for the Beefheart fan. Even if you don't understand Dutch.

PROG ROCK CIVIL WAR

All was quiet on the western front until our old friend Pete Pardo of Sea of Tranquility http://www.seaoftranquility.org launched a grenade into the back of Shawn Gordon’s minivan while he was taking his ProgRock children out for ice cream.

Pete has started a website poll entitled “Who is your favorite ProgRock Records artist?”!

As of now, the Froggs are thoroughly getting their asses kicked by our good pals in Man on Fire!  We are in second place trailing by over 25 votes.  And Cryptic Vision is close behind; their scouts have spotted the back of Bill’s head in their telescope!

Now people, I understand that the MOF guys are much better looking then us.  And you might like their music better.  But keep this in mind…a vote for the Frogg is a vote for the chubby kid on the playground getting his ass beat for his lunch money…don’t let this tragedy go on for one more day!

PROGDAY Festival – Support the Cause

Most of you know that anyone willing to sponsor and organize a prog rock festival does it for the love of the music and not the money.  Most of these wonderful events end up breaking even or losing money and the ones who come out ahead use that dough to book next year’s festival!

ProgDay is a great example of a grass roots operation that puts on a wonderful festival every year!

Lew Fisher of The Progressive Music Society has single-handedly enlisted a number of bands for their help in keeping ProgDay alive.  Nine great bands have donated tracks, six which are previously unreleased, for a compilation disc to raise money for the festival.

Tracks from The Strawbs, Djam Karet, Nathan Mahl, Trettioariga Kriget, Wobbler, Sonus Umbra, Gert Emmens, The Muffins, and Guy Manning.  Many of these bands are friends with the Froggs, it’s important for us to support each other and the organizations that present us to the fans.

Also, a huge thanks to our new crazy friends in Karcius!  Man, these guys jam hard.  My prediction is you’ll be seeing them soon in the USA; they are a very talented bunch of guys.

BE LIKE MIKE

I feel the need to tell you about Mike Keneally’s upcoming tour.  Most of you know that Mike is an amazing person and musician.  He has gone out of his way on several occasions to publicly say nice things about the Froggs.

He just announced a NYC show!

2005/06/17 concert 'The Knitting Factory', nyc, ny, usa (Note early showtime: 7:00 p.m.)

The Froggs will be in the audience, so we hope to see you there.

Mike’s website: http://www.keneally.com (check out his diary where he talks about auditioning for Frank Zappa’s 88 band, it’s awesome!)

Whew, that’s a lot of typing for a big bald guy.  I’m going to see Star Wars now.

Keep in touch, hope to see out at a show.

Best Wishes,

FAVORED NATIONS

"Bloom", the new CD from Eric Johnson, will be released on 2005/06/14.

DOCTOR DARK

  • doctor dark: live at toad's place
        (2005, cdr, usa, private release)

    • 2005/04/05, Doctor Dark opened for Project/Object at 'Toad's Place' in New Haven, CT, USA. An excellent idea that probably introduced both bands to a partly new audience.

The concert itself is great. 'The Blimp', 'Safe As Milk', 'Big-Eyed Beans From Venus', and it goes on for about 45 minutes. The recording is excellent: a crisp sounding soundboard recording.

the blimptro * safe as milk * big-eyed beans from venus * lick my decals off, baby * the past sure is tense * doctor dark * electricity * smithsonian institute blues * moonlight on vermont * veteran's day poppy * pachuco cadaver * steal softly through snow * the torture never stops (frank zappa)

It looks like Doctor Dark is ready to kick some butts in Bad Doberan, next August.

June 1, 2005
Already quite a bit of news on this first day of the month, including one excellent album by Doctor Dark and Eugene Chadbourne.

EUGENE CHADBOURNE LIVE WITH DOCTOR DARK

  • eugene chadbourne: live with doctor dark
        (2005, cdr, usa, private release)

    • December 2004, Eugene Chadbourne and Doctor Dark performed the music of Captain Beefheart at the Cafe Nine in New Haven, CT, USA. An exclusive concert, because it wasn't Doctor Dark opening for Eugene Chadbourne (or vice versa), no no, they performed as one band.
Great interaction, especially when Chadbourne and Bill Saunders sang lead together. Or when Chadbourne was freewheeling on his guitar, backed by the rhythmic train that's called Doctor Dark.

plastic factory * moonlight on vermont * steal softly through snow * the dust blows forward and the dust blows back * orange claw hammer * i'm gonna booglarize you, baby * veteran's day poppy * doctor dark * pachuco cadaver * smithsonian institute blues

We should call ourselves lucky, as this fabulous concert has been made available. And in a very fine looking jacket, if I may say so.
    • Go to www.doctordark.org, and order your copy today.

THE TORNADOES

The new Tornadoes CD will contain 4 tracks that were engineered by FZ in the early sixties at Pal; 5 (including Grunion Run) that were recorded at last year's Zappanale; plus 2 brand new recordings: Bottom Feeder (written by Cosmik Debris author, Greg Russo) and The Cruncher (written by Buff & Aerni).

  • Oppy in NY Tickets Still On Sale!

Well, I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!  I spent mine working almost non-stop around the clock on a variety of projects that all need to get finished in the very near future so I can check them off my spreadsheet and attack the next wave of things that are coming in.  So, here's the update:

* The Last Level One Show (TONIGHT! Tuesday, May 31st @ 10pm)

I know this is bad timing considering that Music Connection just released a very nice interview with me about my Level One nights (it's in the issue with Trent Reznor on the cover), but my last Level One show will be TONIGHT (6/1/05) with The Academy of Chess & Checkers at 8:00 pm, Jettson at 9:00 pm (I love them so much), and SPECIAL OPPS at 10 pm.  This will be followed by a dance party.

Since it's going to be our last show for a while, it would really mean a lot to me if a lot of you would come out.  I know it's pretty short notice but I would really like to go out with a bang so please make it if you can.  If not, we'll be back eventually once I get everything else finished.  I just have way too much stuff going on right now to do a weekly right and I also want to start developing new music ideas I have for what will eventually become album #6.

* oppymusic.com 4.1 Update Coming This Week!

One of the things that we've been hard at work on is cleaning up the oppymusic.com site and getting it ready for the launch of our Internet Marketing Campaign on June 13th.  It's going to be a fairly massive update, cleaning up all the things that needed cleaning up and making everything perfect.  It will also have additional photos, a studio blog of the Special Opps sessions, and lots more cool stuff.

* Last Chance for the 3 for $30 Deal!

Thanks so much to everyone who has bought the current catalog this year!  Just FYI, when the oppymusic.com 4.1 update gets finished, the 3 for $30 deal will be gone and the CD's will revert back to their regular prices.  So if you've been sitting on the fence, this is your last chance to pick up the catalog at a discounted price!  Simply go to www.oppymusic.com to order, or shoot me an e-mail and we can do it that way if you prefer.

* "Beyond the Foggy Highway" Update

As I said in my last e-mail update, I certainly haven't forgotten about the live album!  Scott Chatfield and I will be performing the final round of edits and making the CD master this Saturday, June 4th at Chatfield Manor in Leucadia, CA. T.J. Moore is working, working, working on the cover painting and we're going to do the artwork/layout design immediately afterwards.  That having been said, the official release date has been set for Tuesday, July 5th, so I'll have them just in time for the New York show!

* SPECIAL OPPS Studio Session Update #2

This Saturday, Clark (the drummer), Neil (the engineer), Johnny D. (the videographer), Kat (the singer), and myself (the composer) went into The Mothership to work on the last song for the Special Opps studio album, "Idaho Potato."

Everyone did a wonderful job working on the song and I'm excited about finishing it when we get the piano overdub session going and Jen comes home from Japan to cut her cello part.  It's a really beautiful, meloncholy song and I really hope you enjoy it.  Neil Citron is going to overdub some dobro on it as well and I have a couple ideas on how to make the ridiculously difficult piano parts that bookend the piece even more ridiculous.

You can check out some photos from that session at my MySpace profile at http://www.myspace.com/chrisopperman.

* Oppy in NY Tickets Still On Sale!

We're all getting more and more excited about the impending New York show this July!  I want to say thank you to everyone who is planning on traveling long distances to attend this show.  I'm really flattered that you think so much of my music that you're making a huge road trip out of it and I just want you to know that I'm going to personally make sure that it's worth every ounce of effort it takes for you to get there.  We're going to kick all your monster truckin' asses back to where you came from by the end of the show...but in a very musical way.

You can order your ticket on-line here: http://www.cegmusic.musictoday.com/LionsDen/calendar.aspx

Okay, back to work!  Music is the best.

THE FIRST ZAPPATEERS FESTIVAL

AGI says:
The Zappateers will have their first festival in Ancona Italy on June 25 and 26, 2005.
It's organized in collaboration with ARCI Regionale Marche and our good friends of DebraKadabra (the italian FZ appreciation consortium) for it will be named 2nd UncleMeeting too.

A great chance to meet fellow Zappa fans, listen together to some excellent italian bands, trade recordings and collectibles and, most important, have some fun together.

the bands that will perform at the 1st zappateers fest will (almost certainly) be:

  • 2005/06/25

    • Harmonia Ensemble

    • Ossi Duri
  • 2005/06/26

    • The GrandWazoo

    • Orchestra Spaziale
