NEW RELEASES * NEW RELEASES * NEW RELEASES * NEW RELEASES * NEW RELEASES

  • project/object: the dream of the dog
        (2002, cd, usa, private release)
    • we all know project/object as a band that performs frank zappa's music, but on their latest, "the dream of the dog", they bring you improvised music. actually, it is live improvised music, most of it taken from the improvisational parts / solos during their concerts.  this means that certain tracks have familiar sounding zappa chords in the back. titles like 'towson kong' or 'chicago kong' should get your imagination going  :-)
you'll find all the info on how to get this fine album on www.projectobject.com .
  • captain beefheart: railroadism
(2003, cd, uk, viper cd 015)
    • no, it's not a real new album.  the captain stopped making music some twenty years ago. but, yes, it's a new release.
browsing through the captain's career, displaying recordings from 1966 to 1981, "railroadism" is an OK album.  of course, it cannot be compared to the captain's real albums, but it's nice to listen to.  the quality is better then i expected and the choice of songs is good as well.
  • d'yea: bassstar mission  (1)
        (2003, cd, usa, private release)
    • and a bassstar mission it is.  jerry outlaw (who you should know as the guitar player in bogus pomp) said: "It's nothing like Bogus Pomp but I'm very happy with the way it is developing."
well, i'd sure love to see this band live. this is very heavy, very greasy funk-rock: party music.
i like it a lot, and mr. jerry outlaw throws in a very mean guitar every now and then - just the way i like it.

  • jeff beck: shapes of things
(2003, cd, uk, castle music cmqcd 702)
    • the truth is that "shapes of things" is a sampler. but i also have to say that it collects a lot of tracks that i had never heard of. it's all jeff beck: screaming lord sutch & the savages, the nightshift, paul jones, donovan with the jeff beck group and much, much more.
to be honest, i only mention it here because it also includes three tracks previously released on the fabulous gto's "permanent damage" album.
only for brit-pop collectors and / or completists.
  • jeff buckley: the grace eps
        (2002, 5cd5", uk, columbia 5011782000)
    • this little box includes five eps, originally released in various parts of the world. a very beautiful release.
some of the tracks feature gary lucas on guitar, and, of course, a couple of the tracks were co-written by gary as well.
  • money shot: money shot
(2003, cd, usa, private release ms72319)
    • money shot has recently signed a contract with Atlantic Pacific Entertainment.  they're about to release their first album, and to celebrate / promote this, they have issued a 4-track cd.
      the website
      http://www.moneyshotrockandroll.com
does not give too much info, but this little disc sure is a great introduction !
jerry outlaw says: "I played lead guitar on the recording and wrote parts for all the songs with the other guitarist, Dana Walsh."

superb lead guitar work, and a deep threatening baritione voice.  my favorite kind of a.o.r.  -  get it while you can:

  • various artists: zappanale # 13
        (2003, cd, ger, arf society)
    • i can't say too much about this beautiful disc.  it looks like a zappa album, it has a lot of different bands on it, and they all play zappa stuff. - recorded at last year's zappanale.

someone should tell pierrejean gaucher & christophe godin that they should release their zappanale performance on album. again, they are the highlight.

  • don preston's akashic ensemble: the inner realities of evolution
(2003, cd, usa, brain records br016)
    • the liner notes say that the titles are inspired by a book by rudolf steiner.  i have to say that i am not too familiar with the steiner school, but i hope that you're not holding that against me.
anyway, don preston's latest, "the inner realities of evolution", is a very experimental sounding album. those of you who recall that don preston used to organise improvisational music sessions in the early sixties where people were improvising music against movies that showed protozoa and other funky organisms, will finally get an idea of what these sessions might have sounded like. besides the akashic ensemble, bunk gardner and andré cholmondeley (project/object) also contribute to this album.
  • the grandmothers: a grandmothers night at the gewandhaus
(2003, cd, ger, warner classic 2564600682)
    • recorded live in concert at the 'gewandhaus' in leipzig, germany on march 27, 2003, and performed by the grandmothers (preston, brock, gardner, estrada) and the chamber orchestra of invention.
mostly zappa material, a couple of preston compositions and one piece composed by napoleon murphy brock.  this album presents about sixty minutes ot he concert. (a concert that lasted three and a half hours !!)
      essential.
and where did i read that there might be a dvd-release scheduled as well?

BOGUS POMP TO PERFORM WITH FLORIDA ORCHESTRA

fred hemmer wrote:

Subject: Bogus Pomp Orchestra Zappa tickets on sale soon!

Hi Frank Zappa fans!

Bogus Pomp will perform what possibly may be their best show ever on August 21 at the Tampa Theatre. The gig will feature numerous orchestral, jazz, rock pieces written by Frank Zappa performed by the traditional Bogus Pomp members together with about 15 members of the Florida Orchestra. Unlike the two previous sold out shows with the whole Florida Orchestra where the two "bands" split duty, this show will have all 25 musicians on stage performing at the same time for the whole show. And with an accomplished conductor, Tom Trapp. I don't think there is anyplace in the U.S. where you could see this other than this show.

The venue is great. Tampa Theatre is a restored old theater with remarkable charm. Seats 1400 with a balcony... not a bad seat in the house. You will feel like you are in a castle courtyard enjoying fantastic music. Beer and wine is available. Recording, both video and audio, is welcomed. Just give us a copy please!

Tickets are $27.50 and go on sale Friday, June 27 at 10:00AM. You can purchase tickets at any Ticketmaster outlet, or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Tampa Theatre box office. Hint: The Tampa Theatre has good seats held for their members and you can join their membership by going to their Website at www.tampatheatre.org . Reduced priced tickets for students with valid ID are available.

The band has been rehearsing for this for months. Musical scores have been written specifically for this 25 piece combo. This will be a great show!

Hope to see you there!

ZAPPA PERFORMED AT THE PRAGUE SPRING FESTIVAL

the press release said:

Homage to Frank Zappa
Under this title, on Saturday, 17 May 2003, the first production in the fifty-eight-year history of the Prague Spring Festival to include rock music will take place in the spaces of the Trades Fair Palace of the National Gallery, Prague. To mark the tenth anniversary of the premature death of the composer, the symphonic compositions of Frank Zappa, one of the most original and most controversial figures of music in the second half of the twentieth century, will be performed by the Agon Orchestra conducted by its artistic director Petr Kofroň. The compositions were made in collaboration with the conductors Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta, the famous InterContemporain ensemble and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Apart from these works, an utterly individual blend of the ideas of Varčse and the inspiration of Stravinsky, the performance will be an opportunity for members of the Pražský výběr rock band to join forces again – in particular Michal Pavlíček and Michael Kocáb, both friends and collaborators of Zappa’s, who provided him with the impetus to visit Prague in 1990.

        It makes me mad
When I think about all the idiots in the world
        Who do so little
        Yet have so much
And all they can do is argue and complain
        And start fights over nothing

        While other people
Work so hard and get so little
        And are pushed back
        Again and again and again
What little they have is taken from them
        They sit alone
        And have nothing
And no one gives a damn.

It would topple me into madness
If I were to brood on all
        The injustices in the world.

        I support the earnest strugglers
And I despise the spoiled idiots
And I call each for who they are

And if I can infuriate the idiots
By flinging their shit back upon them
        It'll make me happy.

GENE SIMMONS RECORDS TRACK CO-WRITTEN BY FRANK ZAPPA

From  http://www.idiotbastard.supanet.com/you-call-that-news-/odyframe.htm:

Kiss bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons' first solo record in 25 years will feature songs co-written by Bob Dylan and FZ. The as-yet-untitled disc, for which no release date has been set, will be released on Gene's own label through Sanctuary Records. He plans to build a song around an unused Zappa riff, titled Black Tongue. "The plan is for Dweezil, Ahmet, and everybody to play on it, and to take Frank's voice and create a brand new song. It's very dark, very sort of King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King-kind of sound, with 7/8 time.".

Residents vs. Jason and Freddy etc), a picture created in yer mind's eye by a lyric or song, recreation of Residents album covers. You could even make a short comic, political cartoon, hentai, animae...you name it.

That's just the beginning...for more details go to:
