from "Rollin Red's Big Bad But Beautiful Book of Beefheart Bootlegs -
Volume #2" (Apocalypse) / 1995 :
1994 european bootleg CD Live At The Radar Station on DBCD 460. (A Rollin'
Red Productions) Made in the EEC Luxembourg. Now this CD is an absolute gem. As
soon as I heard about this CD I knew it would be a classic as some years ago I
received a set of 3 x C60s that I'm sure must have been the source for this CD's
compilation & were some the the finest recordings of the Magic Band I'd ever
heard. The brilliant 1968 colour cover shot of Don Van Vliet looks like it was a
possibley taken in Europe & was definitely a shot I'd never seen as there
are too few colour shots of Don or the band from this period.
It's very cleverly edited to give the impression of a live concert! The CD even
starts with a soundcheck of Don playfully hitting what sounds like chinese gongs
before blasting straight into a rip-roaring Moonlight On Vermont. Yet the tracks
included are taken from shows over seven years.
The majority feature the excellent guitars of Tepper & Feldman not to
mention Eric's switching to various keyboards including a superb eerie mellotron
duet witht the great John French on drums on Deserts Of Time (or a famn fine
imitations? from Mr.Williams?)
NB: I once tried to date each track & their locations from the set, but gave
up bacause of the similarity & prescision playing of each track."
