DAVID GREENBERG

  • david greenberg: spring any day now
        (2003, cd, can, marquis music)
    • David Greenberg's "Spring Any Day Now" album is subtitled "Music of 18th century Scotland and elsewhere". You can imagine my suprise that it also included a nice version of Zappa's 'Echidna's Arf'.

ZAPPATRONIX PICTURES

I received a little promotional mpeg4-movie track from Marco Cortesi / Zappatronix. An excellent mix of rock guitar, jazz trumpet, and an electronic beat. It's a shame that Zappatronix isn't coming to Zappanale. I would have loved to see them.

I can imagine that Zappatronix logical habitat is a theater stage or a smaller club. Nevertheless, they would have made quite an impression at Zappanale.

The pictures below are stills from the mpeg4-movie.

THE CZECH FZ FAN CLUB ART PROJECT

Here's yet another beautiful entry for the Czech FZ Fanclub art project !

The end date of the project has been rescheduled to the end of June !!

DZ & ZPZ

Dweezil Zappa says:

Hello Everyone,

I've noticed that there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the lineup of this year's tour. I would love to clarify things for all of you.

First of all it is important to keep in mind that Frank's music is the only reason this tour exists. We all love it and want to see and hear more of it. It is the true focus and Star of the Show. It's a nice bonus for the fans to have the chance to see musicians who've had previous experience in Frank's band playing his music once again. By no means should their presence on stage be over-emphasized. The mission of everyone on the stage is to present the Music!

As you all know Frank has a vast catalog of multifarious compositions. Over the years he led numerous incarnations of band lineups. Some people stayed for a while, some people left and came back etc. This is not a new concept when it comes to executing Frank's music. In our continuing efforts to provide you with a thrilling concert experience we have embraced some changes in material and in personnel. The ZPZ core band has not changed but we do have a new addition as well as a few probable surprises.

I am extremely excited to be able to present some new songs to you in our setlist this year, aided by the talents of our special guest vocalist, Ray White. I have personally always been a huge fan of the sound of his voice. Hearing him sing "Illinois Enema Bandit" and "Doreen" at rehearsals has been a lot of fun. But hearing him on other songs I've never heard him sing has been even more fun. I'm sure you all will agree when you get your chance to hear him for yourself.

Our special video footage with performances from Frank is also going to be quite provocative.

Later in the year we may even have an international reunion with Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio but that has yet to be confirmed. I'll keep you posted on the status of that as well as any other additions to our lineup.

I have also noticed a few of our European friends requesting ZPZ to come to your hometowns. I would personally love to do more of an extended European tour and visit places like Finland and return to places like Manchester. I have already made my own inquiries into the possibilities of increasing the number of European dates. If it can be done it will done.

I would also like to remind those of you who might be feeling left out for missing last year's tour that the DVD of that tour will be available at the upcoming shows. You can see all 3 + hours of your favorite songs with last years special guests right in your own living room. take a look at the DVD trailer link below. I'm very happy that we were able to capture some of those performances in such fine style for all of you.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing all of you out there this year.

Regards,

Dweezil

THE WEASEL MUSIC

Read all about it (and listen to it) over at the Zappateers site !!

  1. Albert Hall Spoken Introduction

  2. Chamber Music Piece 1

  3. Mozart Ballet

  4. Some Zany MOI Bullshit

  5. Chamber Music Piece 2

Here it is: 1/24th of "The History and Collected Improvisations of the MOI."

THE STORY OF THE ACQUISITION: A firsthand account from my source ...

So I get a call from the widow of the great artist, Neon Park. She says, "I've been going through Marty's stuff (Neon's real name was Marty) and I have a lot of records of his. I was talking to (mutual friend) Betzy and she said you like records. Do you want them?" and, being the vinyl hound I am, I said, "You bet! I'll take 'em all sight unseen." She said, "Okay, I'll go pull the can back in from the street." She had had them all in a trash can waiting for the Sanitation Engineers to pick them up.

Now I know Neon worked for many years doing album art for Warner Brothers (best known for Zappa's WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH and his string of covers for LITTLE FEAT) and was on their mailing list for new releases. Upon going through the LPs from the trash bin I found the usual assortment of product, some good, some not to my liking.

But then...

In an envelope addressed to Mr. Frank Zappa at his Laurel Canyon address, I found three studio acetate test recordings: a early ELO LP, a copy of Jean-Luc Ponty's Zappa tribute LP, KING KONG, and a curious disc labeled "The Weasel Music". Suspecting that this might indeed BE SOMETHING, I cautiously played it once. It seemed to be a live recording of the Mothers goofing around on stage doing what I guessed to be a mock-ballet. While light pseudo-classical piano arpeggios play (Ian Underwood?) you can hear the shuffling of feet and various antics while the crowd respond with laughter and amusement. I would imagine that it was mostly a visual presentation as opposed to an essential Zappa musical composition.

I kept this relic in good condition, still in its original envelope and cardboards. I lent it to my new friend and Zappaphile, Krel, when I moved to Little Rock. He has played it only twice, recording it both times.

So there you go.

ZpZ - RAY WHITE

SPECIAL GUEST:

Ray White

Guitar and Vocals

Ray White is a rock and blues guitarist most well-known as a member of Frank Zappa's touring ensembles. He was drafted into Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals. He participated on such albums as Zappa in New York (featuring a powerful lead vocal on "The Illinois Enema Bandit"), Tinsel Town Rebellion, and You Are What You Is amongst others in Zappa's voluminous catalogue.

Ray has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW, Don't Push the Clown and Umphrey's McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and has more recently worked with a variety of Michigan artists, including former Rare Earth Drummer Bob Weaver, as well as members of the funk/fusion combo Generic Produce.

THE WRONG OBJECT - ANNIE WHITEHEAD - HARRY BECKETT

  • the wrong object featuring annie whitehead and harry becket: platform one
        (2007, cd, uk, jazzprint jpvp138cd)
    • "It's jazz, Jim, but not as we know it".

Shazam... Here it is. The long awaited album of The Wrong Object featuring Annie Whitehead on trombone and Harry Beckett on trumpet. Sure, I'm prejudiced as I was at the two Mechelen concerts where a big part of this album got recorded, but still...
"Platform One" is another new album by The Wrong Object and it's great. The compositions by Michel Delville, Frank Zappa, Annie Whitehead and Harry Beckett, make a perfect mixture. The band is in great shape, and guests Annie Whitehead and Harry Becket add an extra flavour that fits in very well. It's like they've been playing together for years.
My favourite tracks: Annie Whitehead's 'Platform 1' and Frank Zappa's 'Filthy Habits'.
      God, this is good...

You've probably seen the below picture before. It's FZ performing with Pink Floyd at Amougies.

Who can help me out ??

The name of the magazine & date of publication would be a great help.

ELTON DEAN & THE WRONG OBJECT

  • elton dean & the wrong object: the unbelievable truth
        (2007, cd, usa, moonjune)
    • October 2005, the Elton Dean and The Wrong Object had scheduled four concerts. Two of these didn't happen because of Elton's health problems. The remaining two took place in Liège, Belgium, and in Paris, France.
Moonjune Records recently released the Paris concert recordings of Elton Dean & The Wrong Object as "The Unbelievable Truth". Moonjune should be known to everyone as the label that puts out albums by artists like Hugh Hopper, The Soft Machine and Tripod, just to name a few. "The Unbelievable Truth" fits in nicely.
The album itself is astonishing. I've heard The Wrong Object on various occasions with different line-ups, and the Elton Dean / The Wrong Object project is an essential chapter in my book.
Just listen to the first notes of 'Seven For Lee' and you'll know what I mean.

A NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

CUCAMONGA

The 2007/05/14 Cucamonga radio show (on belgian radio 1) featured Stuurbaard Bakkebaard with a broadcast of a part of the 2006/12/07 concert at the "Transmusicales de Rennes" festival, Cpt. Cheese-Beard & the 7 Sisters of Prevention with Zappa's 'I'm The Slime' and some parts of the new Zappa DVD.

ANOTHER NEW ODIN ALBUM

  • odin: live at the maxim
(2007, cd, ger, long hair lhc57)
    • While Odin's previous release took an look at a 1973 session, "Live At The Maxim" even goes a bit further back in time. "Live At The Mamim" got recorded in Schweinfurt, Germany in September 1971.
Zappa's Mothers were an obvious influence of Odin. Odin even performed a number of Zappa compositions in concert. On "Live At The Maxim" one can find excellent versions of 'Oh No', 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama', 'Little House', and 'Peaches en Regalia'.

MARKUS STAUSS

A couple of months ago, I mentioned a new album by Markus Stauss:

I have sad news about a Zappa alumni: Kurt McGettrick (bari sax - '88 tour) died last Sunday night (5/7/07).  Cancer...

Kurt was a friend and a musical colleague of mine.  He was an enormously talented and accomplished musician and he will be greatly missed here in LA.

Here's a link to a sax web forum where people are paying tribute to Kurt McGettrick, the musician.

VOICE OF CHEEZ

-----Original Message-----

Voice of Cheez
2007 05 13

Subject: Zappa This Friday

Voice of Cheez Frank Zappa Tribute

Friday, May 18
Nietzsche's, 248 Allen Street, Buffalo, NY
10 pm show time
$6 cover

No commercial potential? Fortunately for Zappa fans in Western New York there are still musicians out there who aren't "only in it for the money."

Buffalo's long-standing Frank Zappa tribute band, Voice of Cheez, can be seen this Friday, May 18 at Nietzsche's, 10 pm. Always an entertaining and lovingly crafted show, the virtual "super group" features Tom Fenton (guitar & vocals), Tina Peel (vocals & madness), Kilissa Cissoko (sax, flute & vocals), Cathy Carfagna (keyboards & vocals), Doug Lambert (bass) and George Olmsted (drums).

Voice of Cheez took their name from a track on Zappa's 1967 debut album, Freak Out. The original "Voice of Cheese" is a dull-witted monologue by Suzie Creamcheese-a parody of the all-American cheerleader-type. Voice of Cheez, the band, performs songs from all eras of Zappa's tenure as the witty satirist of rock.

SUL DIVANO

2007 05 14
PROTESTA ART. vol.3 (otra invitacion desde Alemania)

No será mucho??...

Gracias nuevamente.

CAPTAIN CHEESE-BEARD & THE 7 SISTERS OF PREVENTION

  • cpt. cheese-beard & the 7 sisters of prevention: s/t
        (2007, dvdr-demo, belgium, private release)
    • Cpt. Cheese-Beard & The 7 Sisters Of Prevention is a belgian band, that performs the music of Frank Zappa.
Earlier this year, the band video-taped a rehearsal and put the recording on a DVDR to use as a promotional little dittie. I was quite impressed. Not in the least because it's a nine piece band, which adds some nice colours and textures to the sound.
In the meantime, 2 saxophone players have joined the band, making the total a stunning 11 musicians:
      • Didier Demeestere: drums
      • Pascal Hauben: bass
      • Sara Corsius: keyboard
      • Johan De Coninck Corsius: guitar & voice
      • Rojah Lao: vocals
      • Vanessa Spy 007: very dynamic backing vocals
      • Katja Maes: melodic percussion
      • Antje De Groef: flute
      • Thomas Van Gelder: alto & soprano sax
      • Kristof Kerremans: sax
      • Ludovic Jean-Mart: sax
    • I, for one, am very thrilled to find out what they will sound like next Friday, as they will be performing in Brussels.
You'll need a damn good excuse if you won't see you there...

ARROGANT MOP

I added a couple of nice pictures to the "Arrogant Mop" bootleg entry: both the black vinyl edition and the limited blue vinyl (with a different cover) have been added.

CROSSFIRE PUBLICATIONS

The Crossfire Publications website says:

NEW: Two CDs by former Mothers members, Don Preston's "Vile Foamy Ectoplasm" and Bunk Gardner's "It's All Bunk!", are now available. A collection of Don Preston's more classical pieces, "Works", is available for advance orders. Please see the individual CD pages and the order form for more information.

Also coming in the summer is a series of CDs recorded at Paul Buff's Pal Studios, covering 1957 to 1964. Some of the many unreleased and extremely rare tracks will feature Frank Zappa, who learned how to run a recording studio from Paul Buff. This is the first authorized release of this highly prized material, drawn from Buff's master mixdown tapes and reference discs. More details soon.

Jimmy Carl Black's "When Do We Get Paid?" is also available now.

http://www.crossfirepublications.com/

Greg Russo adds:

CDBaby has Don's CD, and they should be getting Bunk's CD by the end of next week.  Another of Don's CDs, "Works," is probably going to be the next one.  Very few people have the one he sold at shows a few years ago.  I'm going to be banging them out one after the other!  This is not to mention Paul Buff's book and JCB's book as well as a completely unrelated book that I'm finishing up on The Mamas & The Papas.

Paul Buff and I are working out the details of our series.  There will be at least 6 CDs of Pal Studios recordings (some with FZ), and maybe just as many CDs of his Original Sound recordings.  Very exciting.

THE KENEALLIST 2007 05 10

2007 05 10

THE KENEALLIST: May 9 2007: REISSUES OUT NOW!

Hat. and Dust Speck reissues now exist for reals! Available in handy single-CD edition, as well as deluxe signed and numbered CD/DVD configurations for the adventurous.

No, that's not the sound of hell freezing over-- it's the sound of multitudes of delighted MK fans brushing off their antiquated CD and DVD playing devices, to enjoy the embarrassment of riches offered by these luscious reissues.

"These are some of the best reissues I've ever seen. THIS is how reissues should be done." --- blogcritics.org

People from here to there are drooling over the loving attention paid to detail with these releases-- the reconstruction of original art elements, the new liner notes which fill in gaps in the story, the wildly interesting and fun DVD material, the super-high quality remastering of the CDs, the extra music restored to hat. and on and on. Go to alt.music.mike-keneally on Usenet, or http://www.myspace.com/mikekeneally and check out the happy testimonials from happy testy moaners.

Then, get thee to www.moosemart.com for a rocking good time ordering these sweet items. Make great Mother's Day gifts, I'm told!

New sounds at RadioKeneally.com

Scott has just loaded the reunion tracks recorded by Doug Lunn, Toss Panos and myself for the reissue DVDs into the RadioKeneally playlist, along with the menu music I created for both DVDs (a cappella versions of the hat. songs for the hat. menus, guitar-only recordings for the "Dust Speck" songs). The reunion tracks are requestable from the handy RadioKeneally request form-a-rama.

Also, I'm now into week four of my musical directorship of the San Diego chapter of the Paul Green School of Rock, and we are working towards several live performances of "The Wall"-- the first will be on July 3 at the San Diego County Fair, and there will be a further two performances later in July at The Epicentre on Mira Mesa Blvd.

Enjoy wonderful things!

WHAT'S NEW IN BERLIN

Well, I've never been to Berlin...

It's on my list of places I want to visit. I just never made it over there.

And now they're going to rename Street Number 13 into the "Frank Zappa Strasse". In July.

Luc, who recently visited Berlin, showed me where the street is located. The picture below shows the Marzahn and the Hellersdorf district. The Frank Zappa Strasse will be located where the circle-mark is. The picture on the right is the Zoom In.
