Charles Ulrich adds some extra info: Track
1 (9:36) and Track 2 (9:17) are both from the interview that appeared in
Guitar Player (1/77) Track 3 (25:20) and Track 4 (18:44) are both from an interview conducted in 1979. Joe's Garage had been recorded but not released, and FZ was planning to have his home studio constructed. I haven't been able to determine where (if anywhere) this interview was published. Rosen's
early 1980s interview (mentioned in the booklet but not heard on the disc)
was published in Record Review (6/82). A German translation was published
in Fachblatt Music Magazin (6/82)

New
release available on WM Recordings now: It's
about irony and affliction and convenient miracles leading to a happy
ending. Mainly a saxophone concert, it is based on classical traditions
and experiments with jazz and less popular music. Hanns Ahring/Jean Quist/Maren Schram - Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks [WM061]

Early 2007, Dawayne Bailey wrote: I don't know if any collectors would be interested in
this vinyl LP I have but it was released in 1968 - it's called LAB '68 and
features the North Texas State University Lab Band (One O'Clock Lab Band)
from Denton, TX. It's interesting to note that when Lou, Bruce, Sal and Tom were in this college band, The Mothers were recording and performing all those classics that they would play later with FZ.

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 2007 04 23 Berlin
to Name Street for Frank Zappa Berlin,
Germany - April 23, 2007 The city of Berlin will bestow a unique honor on
a unique figure in modern music on July 28th when a street is renamed in
memory of American rock and roll legend Frank Zappa. I n the Marzahn
district of what was East Berlin, "Street Number 13" will be
formally dedicated as "Frank-Zappa-strasse". The ceremony will
take place at the ORWOhaus, a former photographic film plant on the street
that is now home to a musicians' collective. It will be the first street
in Germany named for a rock musician, and the first street in a world
capital named for Frank Zappa. The
members of ORWOhaus themselves proposed the street naming. What motivated
a group of young German musicians to honor an American musical icon?
Andreas Otto, spokesperson for ORWOhaus, explains, "Frank Zappa was
one of the best all-around musicians in the world, as a guitarist,
composer, and band-leader. He was celebrated for his uncompromising
pursuit of musical exploration and excellence, and also for his courage
using his music and lyrics to make society see its faults and hypocrisies.
He didn't do it just for media attention, it was part of his highly
creative and unbending character. He stood up to his own government
against politically-motivated censorship - he testified with great
intelligence in the US Congress, and he refused to hold back his own
outrageous sense of humor. We of ORWOhaus had our own battles trying to
save an unused building and turn it into an active music center, and we
decided that Zappa was a great example of how a musician can have an
influence so far beyond the notes on a page. We hope Frank would be proud
to have his name as an address for so many musicians." Zappa's
work had notable sociopolitical influence in Berlin, a city that had a
physical wall between the philosophies of capitalist democracy and
communist one-party government. US tour operator Scott Tepper is running a
trip this summer that features the Berlin street naming and the 18th
annual Zappanale, a festival in Bad Doberan, Germany, celebrating Zappa's
music and life. He points out, "Frank Zappa was incredibly popular in
the Soviet bloc, even though his recordings had to be smuggled in, and
anyone caught listening to them risked punishment. Zappa represented
absolute freedom of thought and expression, since he often satirized his
own society and government. He inspired people all over Eastern Europe to
keep hoping for their own free societies." Tepper adds that while
some might credit Ronald Reagan with winning the Cold War, there are two
statues honoring Frank Zappa in the former Soviet bloc: one in Vilnius ,
the capital of Lithuania, and one in Bad Doberan. Ther are currently no
statues honoring Reagan. According to Tepper, the street naming in Berlin
reinforces Zappa's status as a champion of real American freedom." The
street dedication July 28th will be followed by free live music outside
the ORWOhaus, and by an indoor reception later that evening. For
scheduling and ticket information, contact ORWOhaus. Scott

Dutch comic book artist Jean-Marc van Tol drew a comic called "Yellow Snow". It has the lyrics of Zappa's "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" as the story-line. The three-page comic initially got published in a magazine called Animo in June 2006. It can also be found in the "Nieuwe informatie over de dood van President Oswaldo (1977) en andere verhalen" collection. The picture on the right is the cover of the "Nieuwe informatie..." book. Published by Catullus in 2007.

A little while ago, I talked about an art project that the Czech Frank
Zappa Fanclub is doing.
The project is called "Zappa And Me", and they're inviting everyone to make their own CD-package. The invitation says: ...buy a CD cover and paint it on both sides as you want - painting, graphic art, collage, plasticine, clay - and whatever you want. Do not forget that your creation will be hung on the board and it should not be bigger then the CD box. send your creations before the end of May to the following address:
Below you can find some examples of what they received so far. |

Among many other things, Jan Hoet is the founder of the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (Modern Art Museum SMAK) in Gent, Belgium. Jan Hoet was the curator of Documenta IX in Kassel, Germany, in 1992. Jan wanted to bring Frank Zappa to Documenta and visited Zappa a couple times. Zappa's contribution to Documenta didn't happen because of Zappa's illness. Initially, Zappa wanted to participate with a piece performed by the Ensemble Modern. "Lux XL", a belgian television show, had Jan Hoet as a guest on its 2007/03/30 show. Jan talked about his meeting with Zappa and even showed the present that he had received from FZ. During a radio-interview to promote the "Lux XL" tv-show, Jan Hoet had already elaborated a bit on the project he wanted to do with Frank Zappa. This radio interview got broadcast on belgian radio one on 2007/03/16.

Saturday
April 21 till Saturday April 28 2007 From
Saturday April 21 until Saturday April 28 Holland Doc shines the spotlight
on musical genius Frank Zappa. Besides unique film material Holland Doc
will also broadcast radio documentaries on the composer and rock-artist
Zappa on its website: www.hollandoc.nl/zappa. The
reason behind this tribute is the documentary Frank Zappa - A pioneer of
the future of music part I & II, recently made by Dutch documentary
filmmaker Frank Scheffer. Along
with part I of A pioneer of the future of music, Holland Doc will show the
two famous documentaries Roelof Kiers made in 1971: Zappa and Frank Zappa
films 200 Motels, and the documentary The Present-day Composer refuses to
die, made by Frank Scheffer in 2000. For the real hardcore fans of Frank
Zappa, Holland Doc will also present an episode of the pop program
Wonderland, that hasn't been broadcasted since 1976. In this episode
director Charles Leeuwenkamp follows two illustrious ex-band members of
Zappa's "Mothers of Invention", Mark Volman en Howard Kaylan,
alias Flo & Eddie during a sightseeing tour in Hollywood. On
the site www.hollanddoc.nl/zappa, Holland Doc will broadcast a Zappa
concert that took place during the summer of 1970 which was aired in the
classic VPRO show Piknik. On the website we also present the Supplement
Tape, made by Co de Kloet in 1990 as a tribute to Zappa's fiftieth
birthday and his four hour 'Freakoutshow', in which he interviews rock
journalists and musicians who worked with Zappa. Check out the promo on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozgUg1zeW4A Visit for further information and an exact timetable our website: www.hollanddoc.nl/zappa.

2007/04/18 - Brandon, Florida - Virtuosic Florida guitarist Todd Grubbs, who has been prominently featured in national and international publications such as Guitar World, Guitar FPM and Guitar (Japan), is currently in the recording studio working on his fourth solo album titled Time, Space and the Electric. For these sessions, Grubbs has enlisted the aid of legendary Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention keyboardist Don Preston to lend a hand. Preston, who is best known for his work with Zappa, Carla Bley, The Residents, Grande Mothers, and John Carter, as well as a his own solo work, will be recording his signature keyboards on a track or two. "I am a huge Don Preston fan," says Grubbs, "he was an important part of Zappa's band during the period I like the most. He brought a great jazz-fusion sound to the band. Don is a great soloist, of course, but also a very well rounded musician - I have a lot of respect for his talent." Other musicians that appear on Grubb's new CD are Jeff Henry (Drums), Alan Tatum (Bass), Mark Prator, who has performed with Iced Earth and Sebastian Bach (Drums), Sean Malone from Cynic and Gordian Knot (Bass) and Patrick Bettison from Acoustic Alchemy (Bass). It is rumored that along with Don Preston, another music legend will grace the recordings of Todd Grubb's new CD. At this point that information is highly guarded but will be disclosed at a future date. Todd Grubbs studied at Berklee College of Music and has been voted 'Most Outstanding Guitarist' at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the 'Most Outstanding Video' two consecutive years in a row. Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs influences, which can be heard throughout Time, Space and the Electric, range from Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Ulli Jon Roth and Adrian Belew. "The songs are going to be very thematic," Todd describes his new work, "with equal emphasis on composition and chops, stylistically ranging from heavy to ethereal." The release date for Time, Space and the Electric is tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2008 - a date we can all look forward to! "I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in the past. My desire has always been to write and perform music and I am very blessed to be able to continue doing this." For more information:

2007 04 Hello,
sorry if you got this message several times, I had lots of problems with
my email software... Two
new Klimperei' Cds on Jardin au fou : see : http://www.jardinaufou.com/ Pour
On songe, en vrac, à Ponge, à Kafka, à Michaux. On
continue à avancer, dans des paysages très vagues meublés d'objets très
précis, au milieu d'animaux ou d'humains, de vivants ou de morts, de
silences et de bruits : on est séduit. Michèle
Narvaez Merci.
