THE GRANDE MOTHERS |
|
|
from lira productions / 20060422 THANKS BOTH SHOWS WERE SOLD OUT IT
WAS LIKE OLD HOMECOMING WEEK FOR THE GUYS There
was a fan who had also been at the premiere performance of the GRANDE
MOTHERS in Leipzig, Germany in 2003 who came to see the LA show(!) KUDOS
to all of the musicians who participated in the Stravinsky AND
THE FANS ROARED.......... Had the best concert experience in a long while on Friday night, when I went to see the Grande Mothers at the Redcat Theater. Who are the Grande Mothers, you ask? Zappa alums Don Preston, Roy Estrada, and Napoleon Murphy Brock, plus Chris Garcia and Miroslav Tadic on drums and guitar, respectively. The first set featured Preston, Estrada, and Brock performing Stravinsky's Histoire de Soldat with a killer chamber ensemble. The second set was a smorgasbord of Zappa tunes. The Stravinsky set was fun (in part because of the Mothers' bad acting), but the Zappa set, which I realized later went on for over an hour, seemed to fly by. It was just beautiful to be able to hear this music (from the front row, no less) played in the spirit in which it was originally conceived, by some of the guys who were originally involved. And though it wasn't a flawless performance (it was the first of two nights), it had more balls and verve and energy (especially given that these guys are approaching geezerhood) than a lot of the newer music I've been hearing lately. Napoleon Murphy Brock is particularly amazing--there just seems to be no limit to his energy, and I don't think I ever got from the records how truly skilled he is as both a singer and a reed player. But Estrada too was a trip--what fun to hear that wacky falsetto of his live! There is a tendency with posthumous performances of Zappa's music to err on the "prog rock" side of things--to go for the cleanness of the 80s groups as opposed to the rawer, sloppier sound of the Mothers. That's probably a good thing when it comes to the chamber or orchestral stuff (which was rarely well-performed in Zappa's lifetime), but in a rock or jazz context it's an approach that can be deadly. The Grande Mothers understand that even though Zappa never embraced rough musics like punk, he knew the value of musical rawness. And though the Redcat show clearly wasn't the sort of carnival experience that it probably would have been if Zappa had been involved, it was pretty damned close--which is good news for shmucks like me who never got to see the real McCoy when he was alive. ON
TO NORWAY then
Canada for 1 week of festivals in July much

Thanks again, for your extreme patience, to those of you who pre-ordered the special edition CD/DVD set. Pompous, pretentious assertions for you to rip to atoms and fling back, negated and robbed of life... "Damnedable" is not a word in my Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, but I so love its configuration and meaning that I insist on using it here, nonetheless. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Wickedness is always
easier than virtue; Oh! So that's why everything has always been so painful and difficult for me! But wickedness often ends up in jail; with a slit throat in a ditch; itching a bad drug habit or dead of it; traumatized by self-ruined marriages due to cheap affairs; as a horrific auto wreck on the highway with beer bottles on the floorboards; on the lam in percolating paranoia; with a knife in the gut from a coke deal gone sour; or strung upside down on piano wire, battered and dead like Mussolini and his mistress... Johnson neglects to mention the high price of wicked shortcuts. Johnson didn't mention the benefits of delayed gratification with which we were brainwashed as children, even when, as I have discovered, sometimes those supposed benefits are illusory; mere control mechanisms of the overlords. Every situation must be analyzed. Consequences of choices must be considered. Responsibility must always reside with he who chooses. There is a grand lack of
reflection and thoughtfulness in the world today. The increased speed of the
flow of information has degenerated the quality and quantity of thought and
reflection devoted to the choices we make, and it has degenerated the tenor of
public discourse. Technological innovation often degrades, rather than enhances, our lives. Unintended consequences appear after it's too late. I often ask myself of every choice: it this good for me? will this increase my happiness? will this improve the quality of my life? will it give me what I want? have I seriously considered what I want and why I want it? There is an admitted lack of altruism here. Happiness cannot be induced into the world until the first person is responsible for his own happiness. Happiness then flows outward into the world. Altruism derived from social coercion repeatedly crashes as catastrophic, horrific, misbegotten utopias from hell. Too often we assume that something is to be done by thoughtlessly imitating others and slavishly adopting the valuations of others, that damnedable mob; that because THE OTHERS do something, it is sufficient justification for us to make a similar action or choice. There exist too many shitty decisions with no thought or reflection behind them. I propose escaping from the ever-frenetic flow of useless information. I propose grabbing back the time of one's life to think and reflect; also, to laugh and play as children. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ John Trubee

"Halo
2" Music Composer Martin O’Donnell explains: “In the summer of
2004, Nile Rodgers and I decided that it would be a good idea to present
the music of "Halo 2" in two separate volumes. The first volume
would contain all the music that was finished and mixed plus some
‘inspired by’ music from music groups whose music was being used in
the game. Since
the first soundtrack was assembled before the game actually shipped, the
second volume would contain the rest of the music, some that I was still
composing and producing, and would be arranged for maximum listening
pleasure. The music in Halo 2 will play back a little differently each
time someone plays the game but on the soundtrack, I have the opportunity
to arrange the music in a way that will never change.” Halo 2, Volume Two will be released on April 25.

KEITH EMERSON RECORDED 'LUMPY GRAVY' |
|

listed by Hoodoo at the alt.fan.frank-zappa newsgroup: 2006/4/15 Sanctuary Records Releases Keith Emerson's New Albums http://home.nestor.minsk.by/jazz/news/2006/04/1405.html The legendary Keith Emerson (T-Bones, The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer), one of the greatest keyboardist in rock history, exploded into superstardom in the 1970s with partners Greg Lake and Carl Palmer in the boundary-smashing progressive-rock trio. A great present for all his fans all over the world will be three special solo titles -- 'Off The Shelf, ' 'At The Movies' and 'Honky' -- scheduled for release through Sanctuary Records in Spring 2006. 'Off The Shelf' will be
released on April 25, 2006. The songs, referred to by Emerson as an "audio
montage of musical snapshots, " are rare and previously unreleased solo
recordings the keyboardist stockpiled from the mid-1980s to almost the present
day. It features original compositions and unique covers in an unpredictable mix
of classical, jazz and Brazilian styles. Emerson's adds his distinctive stamp to
songs by Elvis Presley, Frank Zappa, Thelonius Monk, Ian Dury Special guests include Palmer, guitarist Pat Travers and The Band vocalist/drummer Levon Helm, who is the featured singer on "Straight Between The Eyes" from the film 'Best Revenge.' Alternate versions of Emerson classics "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "America" and "Abaddon's Bolero" are additional highlights. The 15 tracks on 'Off The Shelf, ' which are all making their CD debut, include: "Abaddon's Bolero, " "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "And Then January, " "Rio, " "Straight Between The Eyes, " "Don't Be Cruel, " "Au Privave, " "Walter L, " "Rhythm-A-Ning, " "Asian Pear, " "Motor Bikin', " "America, " "Lumpy Gravy, " "Up The Elephant And Around The Castle" and "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll." 'At The Movies' hits stores on May 23, 2006. It is a three-CD collection of excerpts and pieces from seven films scored by Emerson between 1981 and 2004. Most of this music is very rare and highly sought after by Emerson collectors, and much of it is making its official CD debut in the United States. Disc 1 includes the complete soundtrack to the 1981 Sylvester Stallone suspense thriller "Nighthawks, " which features a rare vocal performance from Emerson on a cover of the Spencer Davis Group classic "I'm A Man." Music from 1986's 'Best Revenge' ends the first disc, including Boston vocalist Brad Delp guesting on "Playing For Keeps." Disc 2 covers three Italian movie scores starting with the 1980 horror film 'Inferno' directed by Dario Argento. Four tracks from director Michele Soavi's 1988 film 'La Chiesa' (or 'The Church') follows. The disc closes with nine tracks from 1986's 'Murderock.' Disc 3 includes the scores for two Japanese films -- 1985's animated feature 'Harmageddon' and 2004's 'Godzilla: Final Wars, ' a remake of the classic original monster movie. The 67 tracks on 'At The Movies' include: Disc 1: U.S. Movies 'NIGHTHAWKS' - "Main Theme, " "Mean Stalkin', " "The Bust, " "Nighthawking, " "The Chase, " "I'm A Man, " "The Chopper, " "Tramway, " "I'm Comin' In, " "Face To Face" and "Flight Of The Hawk." 'BEST REVENGE' - "Orchestral Suite, " "Playing For Keeps, " "The Dreamer (Love Theme), " "Wha'dya Mean, " "Outgoing Tide, " "For Those Who Win" and "The Runner." Disc 2: Italian Movies 'INFERNO' - "Main Title, " "Rose Descends Into The Cellar, " "Taxi Ride (Rome), " "The Library, " "Sarah In The Library Vaults, " "Bookbinder's Delight, " "Rose Leaves The Apartment, " "Rose Gets It, " "Elisa's Story, " "Cat Attic Attack, " "Kazanian's Tarantella, " "Mark's Discovery, " "Mater Tennerbrarum, " "Inferno Finale, " "Cigarettes, Ices Etc." and "Inferno Extras." 'LA CHIESA' - "The Church - Main Theme, " "The Possession, " "Prelude 24" and "La Chiesa Revisited." 'MURDEROCK' - "Main Theme, " "Not So Innocent, " "Prelude To Candice, " "Don't Go In The Shower, " "Coffee Time, " "Candice, " "New York Dash, " "Tonight Is Not Your Night" and "The Spillone." Disc 3: Japanese Movies 'HARMAGEDDON' - "Theme Of Floi, " "Jo And Michiko, " "Sonny's Skate State, " "Zamedy Stomp, " "Challenge Of The Psionic Fighters, " "Children Of The Light" and "Godzilla Vs. Gotengo." 'GODZILLA: FINAL WARS' - "Main Theme, " "EDF Headquarters Fight, " "EDF Museum, " "Infant Island, " "Rodan Attacks NYC, " "Earth Defense Forces Theme, " "Motorcycle Battle, " "Godzilla Awakens, " "Love Theme, " "Monster Zero Theme, " "Cruising The Cirro Stratus, " "Godzilla Theme" and "Godzilla: Final Wars End Theme." 'Honky' will also be released on May 23, 2006. Emerson's debut solo album was recorded in 1980 for the Italian label Bubble. 'Honky' had a limited CD release in 2000 but this reissue is newly remastered and it includes detailed liner notes and photos. This eclectic, highly diverse album found Emerson displaying his sense of humor front and center. Rock, classical, jazz, honky tonk, boogie-woogie and Caribbean/West Indian styles are all here, along with pseudo-broadcasts of snippets of old standards, commentary and easygoing, lighthearted vocals. Emerson's original pieces blend effortlessly with his interpretations of George Malcolm's "Bach Before The Mast, " Billy Taylor's "Big Horn Breakdown" and Meade Lux Lewis' "Yancy Special." The 11 tracks on 'Honky' include: "Hello Sailor, " "Bach Before The Mast, " "Hello Sailor Finale, " "Salt Cay, " "Green Ice, " "Intro-Juicing, " "Big Horn Breakdown, " "Yancy Special, " "Rum-A-Ting, " "Chickcharnie" and "Jesus Loves Me."

listed by Hoodoo at the alt.fan.frank-zappa newsgroup: 2006/04/14 Remember that time John Popper made a speech wearing his "jammies"? Or that time everyone booed when Phish won awards for Studio Album of the Year and Live Jam of the Year? What about Buddy Guy dubbing John Mayer the future of the blues? Derek Trucks Band as the "house band"? A jam-packed first show at Irving Plaza when the trophy was a bowl? You don't? Then maybe you shouldn't let the sixth installment of the Jammys pass you by. In addition to honoring the live music experience with awards in categories like Tour of the Year, Live Performance of the Year, Best Live Archival Album and New Groove, the Jammys provides inimitable live experiences in the form of one-off collaborations and all-out jams. Hippies? Sure, the Jammys has been known to attract a few. But if that's why you missed Sinead O'Connor's return to the stage, not to mention her jam with Huey Lewis and Burning Spear, then shame on you. This year's event, taking place at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in NYC, boasts a typically atypical variety of artists. Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Billy Kreutzmann will be there, as will guitar great Joe Satriani, Afro-pop goddess Angelique Kidjo, jam stalwart Steve Kimock, Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins ... and on and on. Who's jam(my)ing with whom? I don't want to give it all away, but some highlights will include Guster with Peter Frampton, Blues Traveler with Bettye Lavette and Dweezil Zappa with Chick Corea. The show will culminate with a tribute to Frank Zappa, who will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Zappa cohort Napoleon Murphy Brock and Dweezil will be on hand to make sure it's done right. Tickets are
$39.50-$59.50 at Ticketmaster. |

listed by Hoodoo at the alt.fan.frank-zappa newsgroup: 2006/04/16 By RICHARD S. GINELL To an outsider, Igor
Stravinsky and Frank Zappa seemed to reside on different planets, even though
both lived in the Hollywood Hills in the late 1960s. But insiders know Zappa was
a serious Stravinsky buff, invoking the Russian's acerbic spirit, techniques and
even some of his music in his own gargantuan output. Thus, the teaming of one of
Zappa's favorite Stravinsky pieces -- the ever-zesty, ever-acidic
"L'Histoire du Soldat" -- with a survey of Zappa's intricate As it happened, though, Zappa came off a lot better than Stravinsky. There are rumblings of a Zappa revival afoot in the world -- what with his son, Dweezil, preparing to take an authorized "Zappa Plays Zappa" band on the road next month (they'll be at the Wiltern June 23) and this ongoing Grande Mothers project, which was launched in Europe in 2003. The latter group is a quintet containing three alumni of various Zappa bands -- bassist Roy Estrada (an original Mother), keyboardist Don Preston and vocalist/reeds Napoleon Murphy Brock -- plus Eastern European wah-wah guitar wizard Miroslav Tadic and drummer Christopher Garcia. This outfit was
road-tested (their 66th gig), as precise as any of Zappa's bands and able to
burn brightly on a wide range of Zappa selections on Friday (the set list was
completely different Saturday). Indeed, in some cases, the Grande Mothers were able to go deeper into the material, rather than merely parroting Zappa's notoriously tricky composed lines. "The Idiot Bastard Son," for example, revealed some lovely harmonic ideas only hinted at on the original Mothers recording. All on board were adept at exploring the drumfire jazz-rock riffs of the early '70s, and there was a deftly done sample of Zappa's doo-wop sendups. All the while, the screen behind the band displayed slides of Stravinsky beaming down paternally -- as if one needed more reminding after the "Rite of Spring" riff in the middle of "Duke of Prunes." Ironically, the discipline
and canny pacing of the Zappa portion of the program were almost entirely
missing in the Stravinsky perfperf. |

March 2006 Martin Lickert, a barrister, died suddenly, only in his 50s. Once a bookie, then horse owner, and a lover of Cheltenham, he came to the bar late, after being touched with his 15 minutes of fame. He was Ringo Starr's chauffeur, and played a prominent role in the film 200 Motels, about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Jeff Simmons, the Mothers' bass player, had left the group and Zappa was unable to find anyone to play him. In exasperation, he told his entourage the next person to walk into the room would have the part. In walked Lickert, who had gone to buy cigarettes for his boss, Ringo. He was hired, and performed adequately, but became a better barrister than he was a bass player's stand-in.
