ANDRE CHOLMONDELEY - PROJECT/OBJECT - DON PRESTON

2006/04/21

from André Cholmondeley
subject: Project/Object & Don Preston

hello hello

we are in cleveland, the heart of rock n roll... myself and Eric 'n Eric just returned from a morning walk thru the HALL of FAME. Yeah, that was cool. It's easy to be real hip and shun the whole Academy/Hall thing...but... personally, I'm a sucker for the artifacts and actual instruments from amazing sessions etc that they have. A couple dumb exhibits, but all in all a blast of 100 years of incredible music & history. There's something special about seeing all the cool letters, guitars, amps, boots and other stuff from this mad pile of energy called rock n roll.

The project/object Tour continues into the Midwest -- c'mon out, and help us spread the word , if you have friends in the upcoming towns!!

And -this just in- the mighty SEAHAG (Roberto Mangano) will be along until ATLANTA 4/29, at least!

in the Hag's own words:" I've been touring for the past week around the northeast. I originally tried to play only a week at first, but the oceans have swept the hag into 10 more days of sailing the seas of fabreeze........I'll be selling Sound of Urchin cds at the merch booth! See you there,

Thanks, Seahag" ps ---check out Hag's video-directorial debut at www.myspace.com/mpb

As many of you know - a month ago we had some performances with the legendary DON PRESTON in London, Rotterdam and Belfast. An incredible time, that i will sometime on this tour post my diaries of.... but a highlight was visiting and performing at the BBC studios at Maida Vale.
Wow. London. Incredible time.

Today the webcast will be posted on bbc's site -links are below. They will leave it up there for one week so download the hell out of it.
Yo Jonny Pakalolo, check it out - we are on right before the Flaming Lips!!

-Andre'

PS my NEW CD "Enigma With Attitude" is available at the merch-table, in real life, soon for digital download at http://itsaboutmusic.com/
It's an hour of guitar experiments, ambient hip-hop influenced rock n roll instrumentals after too many 70s electronic records and news programs.

 THE JAMMYS RECORDING

The ZpZ performance at the Grammys is available at various places. The best sounding version is at Etree. That's the complete Jammys show. The ZpZ part of this recording is also available at the Zappateers site.
It sounds great.

Great Grande Mothers

Had the best concert experience in a long while on Friday night, when I went to see the Grande Mothers at the Redcat Theater. Who are the Grande Mothers, you ask? Zappa alums Don Preston, Roy Estrada, and Napoleon Murphy Brock, plus Chris Garcia and Miroslav Tadic on drums and guitar, respectively.

The first set featured Preston, Estrada, and Brock performing Stravinsky's Histoire de Soldat with a killer chamber ensemble. The second set was a smorgasbord of Zappa tunes. The Stravinsky set was fun (in part because of the Mothers' bad acting), but the Zappa set, which I realized later went on for over an hour, seemed to fly by.

It was just beautiful to be able to hear this music (from the front row, no less) played in the spirit in which it was originally conceived, by some of the guys who were originally involved. And though it wasn't a flawless performance (it was the first of two nights), it had more balls and verve and energy (especially given that these guys are approaching geezerhood) than a lot of the newer music I've been hearing lately. Napoleon Murphy Brock is particularly amazing--there just seems to be no limit to his energy, and I don't think I ever got from the records how truly skilled he is as both a singer and a reed player. But Estrada too was a trip--what fun to hear that wacky falsetto of his live!

There is a tendency with posthumous performances of Zappa's music to err on the "prog rock" side of things--to go for the cleanness of the 80s groups as opposed to the rawer, sloppier sound of the Mothers. That's probably a good thing when it comes to the chamber or orchestral stuff (which was rarely well-performed in Zappa's lifetime), but in a rock or jazz context it's an approach that can be deadly.

The Grande Mothers understand that even though Zappa never embraced rough musics like punk, he knew the value of musical rawness. And though the Redcat show clearly wasn't the sort of carnival experience that it probably would have been if Zappa had been involved, it was pretty damned close--which is good news for shmucks like me who never got to see the real McCoy when he was alive.

ON TO NORWAY
the GMS are on to Norway for 1 week with the Bergen Symphony Orchestra
performing FZ orchestral music
as well as their own 3 1/2 HOUR show
there will also be performances of
RITE OF SPRING - Stravinsky
IONISATION- Varese
THE UNANSWERED QUESTION - Ives
PROJECT X premiere LIVE performance from UNCLE MEAT

Hello everybody, by the way, hello all you kind subscribers to the Keneallist! How're you doing?

GUITAR THERAPY LIVE is coming soon, soon, soon. Thanks again, for your extreme patience, to those of you who pre-ordered the special edition CD/DVD set. The DVD has been a real bear to produce this time around, but we're confident that it's a quality thing and that you'll find the results worth the wait. Again, thanks so much to the kind folks who pre-ordered for allowing this project to happen.

My blog at MySpace has taken on large proportions. I wrote a bunch of entries while I was in Europe last month if you want to read about my experiences there. More recent topics  included my obsession with Donald Fagen's "Morph The Cat" album, the beginning stages of
construction on what may be my next studio release ("Scambot") and collaborations with Marco Minnemann, Playground Slap and an upcoming album of Albert Ayler compositions with Henry Kaiser and myself. And any number of other topics of varying relevance. Come by?

There's a thing over at Radio Keneally called "Lhai Sal Across The Water." Scott Chatfield compiled it. You can request it (it's credited to "MK & BFD" on the alphabeticized request list). Do so?

TRUBEE ON JONSON

Pompous, pretentious assertions for you to rip to atoms and fling back, negated and robbed of life...

"Damnedable" is not a word in my Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, but I so love its configuration and meaning that I insist on using it here, nonetheless.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Wickedness is always easier than virtue;
for it takes the short cut to everything.
~ Samuel Johnson

Oh! So that's why everything has always been so painful and difficult for me!

But wickedness often ends up in jail; with a slit throat in a ditch; itching a bad drug habit or dead of it; traumatized by self-ruined marriages due to cheap affairs; as a horrific auto wreck on the highway with beer bottles on the floorboards; on the lam in percolating paranoia; with a knife in the gut from a coke deal gone sour; or strung upside down on piano wire, battered and dead like Mussolini and his mistress...

Johnson neglects to mention the high price of wicked shortcuts. Johnson didn't mention the benefits of delayed gratification with which we were brainwashed as children, even when, as I have discovered, sometimes those supposed benefits are illusory; mere control mechanisms of the overlords.

Every situation must be analyzed. Consequences of choices must be considered. Responsibility must always reside with he who chooses.

There is a grand lack of reflection and thoughtfulness in the world today. The increased speed of the flow of information has degenerated the quality and quantity of thought and reflection devoted to the choices we make, and it has degenerated the tenor of public discourse.
The increased speed and volume flow of information steals the time from our lives that is required to process it--time which would better be devoted to thought and reflection. That's why so many shitty choices are made. Their consequences are evident for all to see everywhere.

Technological innovation often degrades, rather than enhances, our lives. Unintended consequences appear after it's too late.

I often ask myself of every choice: it this good for me? will this increase my happiness? will this improve the quality of my life? will it give me what I want? have I seriously considered what I want and why I want it?

There is an admitted lack of altruism here. Happiness cannot be induced into the world until the first person is responsible for his own happiness. Happiness then flows outward into the world. Altruism derived from social coercion repeatedly crashes as catastrophic, horrific, misbegotten utopias from hell.

Too often we assume that something is to be done by thoughtlessly imitating others and slavishly adopting the valuations of others, that damnedable mob; that because THE OTHERS do something, it is sufficient justification for us to make a similar action or choice.

There exist too many shitty decisions with no thought or reflection behind them.

I propose escaping from the ever-frenetic flow of useless information. I propose grabbing back the time of one's life to think and reflect; also, to laugh and play as children.

NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

  • frank zappa: you can't do that on stage anymore gold
        (2006, 2cd, ??, zappa fan trust zft 004/005)
    • A brand-new bootleg with a rather bizarre title: "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Gold". It includes parts of the two 1984 Hollywood concerts.
Both concerts are very good to say the least. And as a bonus, the July one has a lot of special guests.
I'm just wondering why they didn't put out the complete shows?

But then of course, you can always visit www.zappateers.com and check out the complete versions.

STEVE VAI ON HALO SOUNDTRACK

Steve Vai appear
s on the "Halo 2, Volume Two" soundtrack - a follow-up to "Halo 2, Volume One" soundtrack album - which also featured Steve's guitar work. Steve contributes guitar parts to the track "Reclaimer" which was recorded during the initial Halo sessions in Seattle in October 2003, but remained unreleased until now.

"Halo 2" Music Composer Martin O’Donnell explains: “In the summer of 2004, Nile Rodgers and I decided that it would be a good idea to present the music of "Halo 2" in two separate volumes. The first volume would contain all the music that was finished and mixed plus some ‘inspired by’ music from music groups whose music was being used in the game.

Since the first soundtrack was assembled before the game actually shipped, the second volume would contain the rest of the music, some that I was still composing and producing, and would be arranged for maximum listening pleasure. The music in Halo 2 will play back a little differently each time someone plays the game but on the soundtrack, I have the opportunity to arrange the music in a way that will never change.”

Halo 2, Volume Two will be released on April 25.

2006/04/14

from: andré cholmondeley
subject: Robbie 'Seahag' Mangano update

hey folks

wow. back in NJ... we just had an amazing time at STARLAND BALLROOM... Mahavishnu Project wowed them, then we rocked the crowd for nearly 3
hrs... an amazing, crazy Jersey crowd!! It was good to play at home -- so many familiar faces, old friends..and tons of new people. A dream gig. That venue is just one of the BEST, right up there with Variety Playhouse (ATL) and the Fox Theater (Boulder). Intense. One of the greatest sound systems I've even seen or heard, holy crap. And ironically, we missed NJ's smoke free revolution by 24 hrs...!! We played the LAST show in that venue under the 'breathe my smoke' rules......

OK -I wanted to send a quick note to inform you --

UPDATE!....UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE..

SEAHAG aka ROBBBIE MANGANO has joined us for the first several gigs!!!

He will be playing UNTIL April 19 - Toad's Place.

We hope he'll be able to squeeze a couple gigs into his nutty schedule at the end of the tour!! Stay tuned to the site for updates..and check out Robbie's world at www.robbieseahag.com for wonderment and musical insanities.

See you in Albany tonight!!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

  • captain beefheart & the magic band: amsterdam '80
(2006, cd, uk, major league productions mlp12cd)
    • "Amsterdam '80" is a brand-new release. As you can imagine, the album presents the concert that Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band did at the 'Paradiso' concert hall in Amsterdam, November 1, 1980.
The concert is well-known among Beefheart fans. It has been broadcast on Dutch radio a couple of times, and recordings circultate among fans. It even appears on a couple of Captain Beefheart bootlegs.
For your pleasure (and mine),  MLP has released this concert officially. The album was mastered from the original tapes, meaning that the sound of this album is better than any recording of this concert that I'd heard up until now.
The concert itself is very good - which should come as no surprise with a Magic Band that consisted of Richard Midnight Hatsize Snyder, Robert Arthur Williams, Jeff Moris Tepper and Eric Drew Feldman.

Finally, a new Captain Beefheart album that looks good and sounds even better.

Sanctuary Records Releases Keith Emerson's New Albums

The legendary Keith Emerson (T-Bones, The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer), one of the greatest keyboardist in rock history, exploded into superstardom in the 1970s with partners Greg Lake and Carl Palmer in the boundary-smashing progressive-rock trio. A great present for all his fans all over the world will be three special solo titles -- 'Off The Shelf, ' 'At The Movies' and 'Honky' -- scheduled for release through Sanctuary Records in Spring 2006.

'Off The Shelf' will be released on April 25, 2006. The songs, referred to by Emerson as an "audio montage of musical snapshots, " are rare and previously unreleased solo recordings the keyboardist stockpiled from the mid-1980s to almost the present day. It features original compositions and unique covers in an unpredictable mix of classical, jazz and Brazilian styles. Emerson's adds his distinctive stamp to songs by Elvis Presley, Frank Zappa, Thelonius Monk, Ian Dury
and Gary Burton.

Special guests include Palmer, guitarist Pat Travers and The Band vocalist/drummer Levon Helm, who is the featured singer on "Straight Between The Eyes" from the film 'Best Revenge.' Alternate versions of Emerson classics "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "America" and "Abaddon's Bolero" are additional highlights.

The 15 tracks on 'Off The Shelf, ' which are all making their CD debut, include: "Abaddon's Bolero, " "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "And Then January, " "Rio, " "Straight Between The Eyes, " "Don't Be Cruel, " "Au Privave, " "Walter L, " "Rhythm-A-Ning, " "Asian Pear, " "Motor Bikin', " "America, " "Lumpy Gravy, " "Up The Elephant And Around The Castle" and "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll."

'At The Movies' hits stores on May 23, 2006. It is a three-CD collection of excerpts and pieces from seven films scored by Emerson between 1981 and 2004. Most of this music is very rare and highly sought after by Emerson collectors, and much of it is making its official CD debut in the United States. Disc 1 includes the complete soundtrack to the 1981 Sylvester Stallone suspense thriller "Nighthawks, " which features a rare vocal performance from Emerson on a cover of the Spencer Davis Group classic "I'm A Man." Music from 1986's 'Best Revenge' ends the first disc, including Boston vocalist Brad Delp guesting on "Playing For Keeps." Disc 2 covers three Italian movie scores starting with the 1980 horror film 'Inferno' directed by Dario Argento. Four tracks from director Michele Soavi's 1988 film 'La Chiesa' (or 'The Church') follows. The disc closes with nine tracks from 1986's 'Murderock.' Disc 3 includes the scores for two Japanese films -- 1985's animated feature 'Harmageddon' and 2004's 'Godzilla: Final Wars, ' a remake of the classic original monster movie.

The 67 tracks on 'At The Movies' include:

Disc 1: U.S. Movies

'Honky' will also be released on May 23, 2006. Emerson's debut solo album was recorded in 1980 for the Italian label Bubble. 'Honky' had a limited CD release in 2000 but this reissue is newly remastered and it includes detailed liner notes and photos. This eclectic, highly diverse album found Emerson displaying his sense of humor front and center. Rock, classical, jazz, honky tonk, boogie-woogie and Caribbean/West Indian styles are all here, along with pseudo-broadcasts of snippets of old standards, commentary and easygoing, lighthearted vocals. Emerson's original pieces blend effortlessly with his interpretations of George Malcolm's "Bach Before The Mast, " Billy Taylor's "Big Horn Breakdown" and Meade Lux Lewis' "Yancy Special."

The 11 tracks on 'Honky' include: "Hello Sailor, " "Bach Before The Mast, " "Hello Sailor Finale, " "Salt Cay, " "Green Ice, " "Intro-Juicing, " "Big Horn Breakdown, " "Yancy Special, " "Rum-A-Ting, " "Chickcharnie" and "Jesus Loves Me."

JAMTASTIC VOYAGE

Remember that time John Popper made a speech wearing his "jammies"? Or that time everyone booed when Phish won awards for Studio Album of the Year and Live Jam of the Year? What about Buddy Guy dubbing John Mayer the future of the blues? Derek Trucks Band as the "house band"? A jam-packed first show at Irving Plaza when the trophy was a bowl?

You don't? Then maybe you shouldn't let the sixth installment of the Jammys pass you by.

In addition to honoring the live music experience with awards in categories like Tour of the Year, Live Performance of the Year, Best Live Archival Album and New Groove, the Jammys provides inimitable live experiences in the form of one-off collaborations and all-out jams.

Hippies? Sure, the Jammys has been known to attract a few. But if that's why you missed Sinead O'Connor's return to the stage, not to mention her jam with Huey Lewis and Burning Spear, then shame on you.

This year's event, taking place at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in NYC, boasts a typically atypical variety of artists.

Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Billy Kreutzmann will be there, as will guitar great Joe Satriani, Afro-pop goddess Angelique Kidjo, jam stalwart Steve Kimock, Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins ... and on and on.

Who's jam(my)ing with whom? I don't want to give it all away, but some highlights will include Guster with Peter Frampton, Blues Traveler with Bettye Lavette and Dweezil Zappa with Chick Corea.

The show will culminate with a tribute to Frank Zappa, who will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Zappa cohort Napoleon Murphy Brock and Dweezil will be on hand to make sure it's done right.

Tickets are $39.50-$59.50 at Ticketmaster.

To an outsider, Igor Stravinsky and Frank Zappa seemed to reside on different planets, even though both lived in the Hollywood Hills in the late 1960s. But insiders know Zappa was a serious Stravinsky buff, invoking the Russian's acerbic spirit, techniques and even some of his music in his own gargantuan output. Thus, the teaming of one of Zappa's favorite Stravinsky pieces -- the ever-zesty, ever-acidic "L'Histoire du Soldat" -- with a survey of Zappa's intricate
idiosyncrasies for rock band at REDCAT on Friday night was not so much far-fetched as it was far-sighted.

As it happened, though, Zappa came off a lot better than Stravinsky.

There are rumblings of a Zappa revival afoot in the world -- what with his son, Dweezil, preparing to take an authorized "Zappa Plays Zappa" band on the road next month (they'll be at the Wiltern June 23) and this ongoing Grande Mothers project, which was launched in Europe in 2003. The latter group is a quintet containing three alumni of various Zappa bands -- bassist Roy Estrada (an original Mother), keyboardist Don Preston and vocalist/reeds Napoleon Murphy Brock -- plus Eastern European wah-wah guitar wizard Miroslav Tadic and drummer Christopher Garcia.

This outfit was road-tested (their 66th gig), as precise as any of Zappa's bands and able to burn brightly on a wide range of Zappa selections on Friday (the set list was completely different Saturday).
With Brock's powerful vocals, physical shtick and ability to double expertly on flute and tenor sax coupled with Preston's and Tadic's electronic salvos, the evening contained a lot of the contradictory eclectic, serious and circusy flavors of a Zappa show.

Indeed, in some cases, the Grande Mothers were able to go deeper into the material, rather than merely parroting Zappa's notoriously tricky composed lines. "The Idiot Bastard Son," for example, revealed some lovely harmonic ideas only hinted at on the original Mothers recording.

All on board were adept at exploring the drumfire jazz-rock riffs of the early '70s, and there was a deftly done sample of Zappa's doo-wop sendups.

All the while, the screen behind the band displayed slides of Stravinsky beaming down paternally -- as if one needed more reminding after the "Rite of Spring" riff in the middle of "Duke of Prunes."

Ironically, the discipline and canny pacing of the Zappa portion of the program were almost entirely missing in the Stravinsky perfperf.
The three Mothers took the roles of the Narrator (Estrada), the Soldier (Preston) and the Devil (Brock), making tedious, hammy work of C.F. Ramuz's playlet, and there were missed cues and outbreaks of scrappy playing in the otherwise high-spirited seven-piece instrumental ensemble. More rehearsal, tighter control of the dialogue, please.

MARTIN LICKERT

March 2006

Martin Lickert, a barrister, died suddenly, only in his 50s. Once a bookie, then horse owner, and a lover of Cheltenham, he came to the bar late, after being touched with his 15 minutes of fame. He was Ringo Starr's chauffeur, and played a prominent role in the film 200 Motels, about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Jeff Simmons, the Mothers' bass player, had left the group and Zappa was unable to find anyone to play him. In exasperation, he told his entourage the next person to walk into the room would have the part. In walked Lickert, who had gone to buy cigarettes for his boss, Ringo. He was hired, and performed adequately, but became a better barrister than he was a bass player's stand-in.

Grand Opera House ready to rock and roll

Special to The News Journal

Eric Svalgård bought the Paul Green's School of Rock Music franchise rights for New Castle County.

By MAUREEN MILFORD The News Journal (Wilmington, DE)

Welcome to the Grand Opera House and the Kingdom of Rrrrrock.

You heard right. In July, a School of Rock Music will open at the stately Grand and students will be creating some musical fusion inside its 135-year-old walls.

The after-school music program, part of the Paul Green's School of Rock Music chain, is being developed by keyboardist Eric Svalgård of Media, Pa., who bought the franchise rights for New Castle County in February for $40,000.

Legend has it that the school's founder, Paul Green, 33, was the inspiration for actor Jack Black's over-the-top Dewey Finn (a.k.a "Mr.S") in the 2003 movie, "School of Rock."

"I recognize Paul Green in Jack Black -- like some of his expressions," said Matt Manser, 18, a six-year student at the Philadelphia School of Rock. "But Paul's not that cheesy."

However, Green, described by some as "confrontational," has been known to tell a student guitar player to go out and perform a "face-melting solo."

"That movie was a PG version of me," Green said. "I teach by the seat of my pants, so I never know what's going to come out."

Still, the real Paul Green's School of Rock Music is not like Hollywood's "bubble gum" version, said Manser, who said he's not a fan of the movie because "they stole the idea from us." Green said he started the school in his house in 1998.

Manser, who plays guitar and has performed with classic rock icons like Peter Frampton and Alice Cooper through the school, said the school has been an important part of his life, introducing him to people he never would have met at high school.

"Rock School is like a community," where students play everything from classic rock to shred metal to punk to alternative rock, Manser said.

Svalgård said the school's marketing strategy is targeted at kids like Manser and Eric Dicandilo, 17, of Downingtown, Pa. The guitar and bass player has been going to the Downingtown School of Rock for two years.

Dicandilo admits he didn't know a scale or a chord when he started. Now, his band Stevadelic is getting gigs at local bars.

And there's another benefit to rock school: "You get a lot of groupies," Dicandilo said.

Kids are the market, but the customers are the parents who pay the bills. Tuition is $200 a month, although there will be an introductory rate of $180 a month until enrollment reaches 60. Students, who receive one private 45-minute lesson a week, are exposed to the full range of rock music from rockabilly to funk. They are also encouraged to come to the school at any time and jam, Svalgård said.

Svalgård, 50, who is currently on a 28-city tour with Project Object, a Frank Zappa tribute band, hooked up with the Grand after he decided to open a School of Rock franchise in February. Besides the initial franchise fee, Svalgård will pay 5 percent of the monthly gross revenues to the franchisor, Paul Green School of Rock Music LLC in Philadelphia. Paul Green is president of the privately held company.

"In exchange, we get their national marketing exposure," said Svalgård, who attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Although Svalgård looked in suburbia for a location, the opera house was a great fit, he said. He declined to say what his business arrangement is with the Grand.

Kenneth A. Wesler, executive director of the Grand, who was not at the opera house this week, did not return calls for comment.

"I'll bring a youthful excitement and vigor that maybe the Grand is missing now," Svalgård said.

The Delaware school will be launched with a benefit concert June 24 at the Grand. Students who are part of the Paul Green's School of Rock All-Stars will perform a classic rock show. Proceeds will benefit Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children.

Green, who has a degree in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, moved in 2000 to space on Race Street in Philadelphia.

There are now about 14 School of Rock locations from Cherry Hill, N.J., to Hollywood, Calif.

Billed as a performance-based music program, the idea is to give middle and high school students a real rock experience, including a concert on a stage three times a year. When a show is in development, there are three-hour rehearsals every week. The first show Svalgård plans to put on is Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

"We're putting them in a real venue with real lights and a real audience, not just their mothers and girlfriends," Svalgård said.

But students don't get a diploma when they leave, Green said.

"They get a handshake and kick in the pants," Green said.

ZpZ ADDITIONS & CORRECTIONS

With a couple of corrections, and a lot of additions, the new ZpZ looks like this:
