MONTY OXYMORON

  • monty oxymoron: living my life backwards
        (2005, cdr, uk, oxy 001)
    • Keyboardplayer for British band The Damned, Monty Oxymoron recorded his first solo album in 2005. The album includes 'Zappafrank' an Oxymoron composition on which he says:

"With much trepadation on the behalf of the reviewer the above-named track starts... it's very different from the preceeding tracks as the title indicates. Occasional weird timings with jazzy keyboard meanderings. Sounds like there's hordes of mice running around on the keyboards. Zappa fans will love it. Abstract art!"

Unfortunately, I'm not too satisfied with this album. The first couple of songs that I listened to it, I thought of it as very experimental material. It sounded like fragments of songs, skipping from one track into another... It only took me a couple of minutes to realise that the disc was full of errors, and that it was indeed doing some foreward skipping.

I solved it by burning the damaged disc to another CDR (on very low speed). That did the trick, and afterwards, I could enjoy the album the way it was intended.
It's an OK album, (british psychelic stuff) and the 'Frankzappa' track does sound quite mother-esque, but it just skipped one time too often during my first listening...

ABNUCEALS EMUUKHA REVISITED

Regarding the meaning of the words "Abnuceals Emuukha", Bill Flynn wrote the following:

Not sure what it means, but amusingly, it looks like Ken Shroyer has adopted the words as knickname.

See the credits to The Chipmunk Adventure (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092752/soundtrack)
and Xanadu soundtrack (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081777/soundtrack).

DIE SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG

  • various artists: 1979 - ein jahr und seine 20 songs
(2006, book + cd, ger, süddeutsche zeitung)
    • Here's another little collectable item...
The Südddeutsche Zeitung is a popular german newspaper. A little while ago, die Süddeutsche Zeitung started a series called "1000 Songs - Fünfzig Jahre Popmusik" (1000 songs - 50 years of popmusic), taking on the huge task to publish a book on every year of popmusic, counting from 1955 until 2004. Each book also includes a CD with 20 songs. Thus getting the 1.000 songs total.

Volume "1979" includes a short piece (and some pictures) on Frank Zappa. The album includes 'Bobby Brown'.

It's just another sampler with a Zappa track on it.
      But it's a beautiful one.

ADRIAN BELEW

Adrian Belew warms up his act here for Europe

By Jordan Oakes

SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
2006-03-23
Musician Adrian Belew
Will the real Adrian Belew please warm up?

The venerable guitarist, songwriter and now painter will be coming to town with his self-proclaimed power trio.
"We're just doing four warm-up dates, St. Louis being one of them," Belew says.
Then the band will pack up its instruments and head overseas. After a lengthy tour of Europe and Australia, they'll return - revved up - to America: "I want to bring the power trio back to the States."

Belew means that in more ways than one. From the beginning, the musician whose first instrument was the drums has been a self-starter and innovator. And his whimsy-prone ambition has always stayed a step ahead of his fans' expectations.
It's a journey that spans his work with Frank Zappa; his role in reshaping (along with Robert Fripp) King Crimson from a '70s prog-rock artifact to a blueprint for guitar-based avant-garde music; and his Beatles-style pop experiments, alone and with the Bears.
These days, Belew is exploring the live possibilities of the rock trio.
He's divided his recent studio work into three albums to show the different sides of himself.

Last year's "Side One" combined pop songs such as "Ampersand" with the sort of weirder stuff you'd expect from a musician who doesn't so much
caress his guitar as argue with it.

"'Side Two' is a totally different kind of music," Belew says. "It has synthesizers and drum machines - almost like my own version of DJ music."
The upcoming "Side Three," though, will be a feast of leftovers.
"It's a lot of different material that didn't really fit in the other categories," he says.
But Belew is not easy to categorize. He's that rare breed of musician who, like Tom Verlaine and Nils Lofgren, is renowned for his guitar chops but can write a mean song. In particular, he has mixed and matched genres, from pop-rock to avant-garde, with ease - and now an easel.
"I think these days my fans have realized that I multitask," Belew says. "I like to do a lot of different things."
What some fans may not realize is that for the past couple of years, he's been mastering a new kind of task: painting.
Examples of Belew's work, which is decidedly abstract and menacing, can be found on the front of his recent CDs.
"My painting is very much like my music, in that I'm always discovering," says Belew, who's never had a guitar lesson. "I don't know in technical terms how to do something, or what I'm doing. I just discover things. That's the same way I've approached guitar all my life."
In the long arc of his career, Belew has gone from drummer's hide to artist's canvas. But deep down, he's all about the music.
"What I'm doing now is warming up my power trio for Europe and Australia," he says. "I think the date at Blueberry Hill will be a really good one in the sense that we're all anxious to play again. Even though it's a warm-up for Italy, we're going to play our hearts out."

HOWARD KAYLAN

from PR Web (alt.frank.frank-zappa)

Howard Kaylan -- Lead Singer of the Turtles, Mothers of Invention, Flo and Eddie -- Releases First Solo Album

Recorded in Billy Bob Thornton's studio in Beverly Hills, and featuring the Oscar winner on guest vocals, "Dust Bunnies" is an album of little-known gems from the sixties and beyond sung by one of the quintisential rock voices, Howard Kaylan.

Seattle,WA (PRWEB)March 21, 2006 -- Dust Bunnies is the first solo album to come from Howard Kaylan, the lead singer of the Turtles, Flo and Eddie and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. The songs were hand-picked by Kaylan from years of seldom-heard B-sides and album cuts recorded by many of his favorite artists and supplemented by new arrangements of more familiar pieces and a rock original or two.

Recorded last year in Billy Bob Thornton's home studio in Beverly Hills, Dust Bunnies features Mr. Thornton on its finale cut, "Music." As the Turtles continue to tour America and the world, Dust Bunnies is the only NEW project to be untaken by a member of that now-legendary band. And Kaylan's vocals, famous for Happy Together as well as projects with Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, John Lennon and many more can be heard, once again, singing pop-rock the way that it was meant to be.

A Brief Biography
Howard Kaylan was born in New York City on June 22, 1947 and moved with his parents to Los Angeles before his tenth birthday. It was at Westchester High School where he met the members of the band soon to be named The Turtles. Their first hit, Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" climbed into the national top ten six months after Howard graduated from Westchester High and the trip has never stopped. Many more hits followed, "You Baby", "Happy Together", She'd
Rather Be With Me", "You Showed Me" and "Elenore," which Howard wrote, were among the band's chart topping successes.
In 1970, the Turtles became the first rock band to ever do a command performance at the White House.
Later that year, the Turtles broke up and Howard, along with partner Mark Volman, joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention where he starred in Zappa's film "200 Motels" and sang lead on "Live at the Fillmore East", "Just Another Band From L.A." and others. In 1970, Kaylan and his partner began to assert themselves as background singers on hit records and albums by T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alice Cooper, Blondie and many more.
Flo and Eddie, Mark and Howard's alter egos released five albums before the duo went into writing all the music for the animated series "Strawberry Shortcake" and "The Care Bears."
Then the duo tackled radio appearing daily on NYC's K-Rock Radio following Howard Stern's show. Kaylan has also acted in the films "Get Crazy", "Stephen King's Riding The Bullet", and last year, wrote the full-length motion picture "My Dinner With Jimi", a huge festival favorite that will be released in theaters in 2006 from Rhino Films.
Dust Bunnies is his first solo album.

DOCTOR DARK

Doctor Dark is back !!
Here's a message from Bill Saunders:

2006/03/20

After a much needed winter break, I'm happy to announce that Doctor Dark is back with some new performance dates, and an expanded line-up.  Granted, you need to come to New Haven to see us, but its a nice little trip....

Last October we opened for Project/Object with a new line-up that included Eric Slick on drums and Warren Brelsford on bass.  There are several selections from that performance on line at http://doctordark1.tripod.com/audio.html.  Steve Aceta also joined us on saxophone on 'Torture Never Stops".

Eric's big gig is as the new touring drummer for Project/Object, so he will be pulling double duty on April 19th, when we open for P/O at Toad's Place, here in New Haven.  This kid's been making quite a stir in the music world since graduating from the Paul Green School of Rock.  Read this wild on-line review,

http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A26EW6FJ4L941G/ref=cm_cr_auth/103-6430162-7001410?%5Fencoding=UTF8

This time around, we also have special guest, Chris Cretela on Guitar.  Chris and Joe are working hard to unravel some  clattering troutmask gems to unleash on an unsuspecting public(Ella Guru, When Big Joan Sets Up, Sweet Bulbs, ...)  Will Ianuzzi will also be joining us on accordion for a fun version of HarryIrene. And Steve Aceta will be back with some crazy sax.

Chris, Warren, and Steve also play together in this awesome jazz band, Goose Lane Check it out here.  Good  stuff.  http://www.gooselane.org/.

In addition to the April 19th show with Project/Object, will be playing on April 1st, at Cafe Nine, here in New Haven.

Also on this April Fool's Day bill is The Fighting Cocks, featuring Philo Kramer fromt the seminal punk band FEAR (who, incidentally shared rehearsal space with Captain Beefheart in the early eighties), and Baboon Nature (http://www.myspace.com/baboonnature), an experimental free improv featuring Chris Cretela on Guitar.

Cheers!

20060319
I know, it has been over a week, but I've been reading an interesting book, and I went to two Wrong Object gigs...
Still, that doesn't mean that nothing is happening.
I even had two Don Preston gigs scheduled, but as the road to Rotterdam was one big traffic jam, I had to let these pass... Pity...

THE WRONG OBJECT

I went to see the Wrong Oject in concert twice this week. The first time in Baarle Nassau, NL, and the second time in St.Jozef Rijkevorsel, over here in Belgium. The Baarle Nassau gig was good. Especially if you consider that the band hadn't reheased in about three months.
The St.Jozef gig was excellent. Better sound, tight playing and everyone in great shape.
Both concerts had fine setlists including a lot of Zappa material and Elton Dean's 'Seven for Lee'.

The next couple of weeks, the band will be working on a recording that should become their first album. Keep your eyes open for that one.

SOFT MACHINE

The day before yesterday I received a DVDR with the recording of the Rockpalast / Jazzline broadcast of last year's Soft Machine concert at the Leverkusener Jazztage.
I added an entry for Soft Machine to the United Mutations archives, including their discography. (thanks to Danny Mathys)

RELIX

Check out this week's highlights on Relix.com <http://www.relix.com>

Guitar god, comedic iconoclast, avant-garde composer and musical
provocateur-that's Frank Zappa. "My job," he once said, "is extrapolating
everything to its most absurd extreme." You have to wonder what Zappa-who
died on December 4, 1993, at the age of 52-would have thought of all the
absurdities today. We here at Relix think he's worth celebrating, which is
why we've devoted 22 pages of our April/May issue to a look at the genius of
Frank Zappa (you can also listen while you read, as our second CD of the
year features his track, "Imaginary Diseases." Zappa will be celebrated at
the Jammys <
http://www.jammys.com> on April 20th in the form of this year's
Lifetime Achievement Award. Stay tuned.

ZAPPA AT KNEBWORTH

A little while ago, I received the following message from Henrietta Bannister:

"My father, Freddy Bannister, promoted the Knebworth festivals between 1974-1979 including the 1978 Knebworth festival with Frank Zappa and also the 1975 Knebworth festival with Captain Beefheart. We have recently produced a “1978 Frank Zappa commemorative set.

FRANK ZAPPA AT KNEBWORTH COMMEMORATIVE SET

The 1978 Knebworth Frank Zappa commemorative set has been produced in a limited edition of only 200 and  includes the following:

  • Programmes, flyers and the ticket from 1978  Frank Zappa Knebworth festival

  • An original 1978 Frank Zappa Knebworth pass, with a letter of authenticity

  • 12 photos of the 1978 Knebworth festival

  • 330 page book on the behind the scenes hassles of promoting the Knebworth festival and also working as Frank Zappa's European representative in the seventies, including his ill-fated 1971 tour.

  • And a special gift with the set: four CDs and a DVD live from Knebworth

    • The four CDs include:

      • 1978 Knebworth Frank Zappa 1CD

      • 1975 Knebworth Captain Beefheart  1CD

      • 1978 Knebworth The Tubes     1CD

      • 1978 Knebworth Peter Gabriel ! CD

    • A 50 mins DVD of various Knebworth festivals between 1974 - 1979, including The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and Genesis.

  • All enclosed in the same very attractive turquoise and silver presentation box.

For further information please email info@rockmusicmemorabilia.com."

I received the box last week, and I have to admit that it looks great.
Memorabilia afficianados will be very happy with the program booklet, the pass and the photographs, whereas melomaniacs will be impressed by the plus threehundred page book by Freddy Bannister.

"There Must Be A Better Way", subtitled "The Story of The Bath and Knebworth Rock Festivals 1969 - 1979", gives an impressive insight of what promoting these festivals was all about. Besides that, the book also gives numerous facts and data, as well as very entertaining anecdotes on the various bands and musicians that Freddy Bannister encountered.

Although the book focusses on the Bath and Knebworth festivals, Bannister also talks about the various tours he promoted: the 1971 Mothers tour with the Montreux fire and the Rainbow Theatre incident, Beefheart's european 1972 tour, a Flo & Eddie tour, Zappa's Grand Wazoo tour, and Zappa's 1973 & 1978 tours.

The book is very well-written and is fun to read (now you know why there haven't been any new posts the last couple of days...). If you want to know more about the time that Aynsley Dunbar's hair caught fire, about the Tommy Mars bust, Herb Cohen's little naps or even about Jimmy Carl Black's english daughter, this book is a must.

One can only imagine what else is floating around in Freddy Banister's archives or memory...

THE KENEALLIST 20060310

The Keneallist: March 10 2006

Hey, you who are reading this! This is a reminder, in case you're anywhere near The Netherlands this weekend:

Sunday, March 12, 2006
Mike Keneally and the Metropole Orchestra
conducted by Jurjen Hempel
perform
The Universe Will Provide and two new MK pieces
(Bryan Beller will be playing, too)
Philharmonie Haarlem
Lange Begijnestraat 11
Haarlem
The Netherlands
2:30 p.m.
Tickets: €19.50 - €28
Info: +31 23 512 12 12

This performance has taken an interesting turn -- in the early part of this week I wrote two new jazz rock type pieces for an eleven piece group (mostly drawn from the ranks of the Metropole). We recorded the pieces on Tuesday. They're called "Chee" and "Ack" and along with two improvisations, will comprise the first part of the performance this Sunday. After intermission we'll perform the complete "Universe" suite as it appears on album (including five movements which haven't been performed live yet). Today was the final day of rehearsal and the music is very happening. Please come to this show if you can.

I've been in Europe for a few weeks and have been keeping a pretty exhaustive blog at http://www.myspace.com/mikekeneally. This blog is the most talkative I've been on the web for a long time, so if you happen to enjoy my words you might dig to check it out.

In fact, as soon as I'm done with this missive, in a moment, I'm going to just frenziedly blog about this past week of rehearsals, recording sessions and having rocks thrown at me by street toughs in Hilversum.

Coming soon to the Keneallist: I'll annoy all the non-Californians with info about more Southern California gigs (info which is also currently visible at www.keneally.com), more European concert activity, and we'll discuss the timeless Dutch expression "Bob jij of Bob ik?"

I haven't seen the last episode of Project Runway, so nobody tell me who won,

-- Mike

PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE

  • various artists: pink floyd
        (2005, cd, nl, uax 96172)
    • Somewhere last year, this Pink Floyd tribute came out.
Some of the tracks on this disc feature Dweezil Zappa ('Run Like Hell'), Aynsley Dunbar ('Young Lust', 'Run Like Hell' and 'Any Color You Like') and Vinnie Colaiuta ('Shine On You Crazy Diamond').
The list of participating artists is impressive, and the album sounds good.

MAGAZINES

Talking about magazines, here's a couple from the "B"-section:
  • backstage (1990/10, magazine, belgium) - vai
  • backstage (1993/12, magazine, belgium) - vai

PETULANT FRENZY

Mr.Dave says: Marquee Gig Thursday April 27

My Fellow Austalians,

the marketing department of Big Swifty and Associates has decided that the John Howard's 10 years captaining the Australian cricket team needs some
sort of celebration. As such, they have booked one of Australia's favourite Zappa covers bands, Petulant Frenzy, to headline the festivities at the
Marquee (128 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Camperdown (02) 9557 0221).

Guest speakers include Alan Jones, Rex Hunt, Rodney Adler, John Mangos and a special appearance by Gary Sweet as the Ghost of Sir Donald Bradman. Colour and movement by the I-Didn't-Do-It Dancers. Rumours that Donald Rumsfeld will make a special appearance on clavinette will neither be confirmed nor
denied.

Price is a mere $10000 per head for advance bookings, or $15 on the door.

Maintain the rage.

-- Mister Dave

FREAKY FUKIN WEIRDOZ

  • freaky fukin weirdoz: culture shock
        (1995, cd, ger, semaphore 37000-422) - incl.'ms pinky' (f.zappa)
    • German band the Freaky Fukin Weirdoz use Zappa's 'MS Pinky' riff on their "Culture Shock" album, on a track called 'Bitch Make Sandwich'.
It's very recognisable and well done.

Describing the album is a bit harder. The FFW sound a bit like a death-metal version of Rage Against The Machine. There's a couple of nice tracks on the album, and the part where the guitar player uses the Zappa riff is really good.

A BOOTLEG DVD REISSUE

  • frank zappa: john, dan and me
        (2004, dvd-bootleg, ??, apocalypse sounds as 29) - digipack
  • frank zappa: john, dan and me
        (2004, dvd-bootleg, ??, apocalypse sounds as 29) - plastic box
    • I don't know which one came first, or if they got released together, but the "John, Dan and Me" bootleg from a couple of years ago, with the Saturday Night Live recordings, has been issued as a digipack, but also in a plastic box...
I just thought you needed to know this...

ANOTHER ZAPPA BOOTLEG DVD

  • frank zappa - mothers of invention: stockholm, sweden 1973
        (2006, dvd-bootleg, ??, wow corporation wow-149)
    • Haven't we seen this before?
      Yes, we have.
This is a recording of the famous Oppopoppa special, a television broadcast of the 1973/08/21 concert in Solliden, Stockholm, Sweden.
These recordings have appeared on various DVD bootlegs like "Stockholm in Bondage" and "Swedish Sensation".

CHRIS OPPERMAN 2006 02 24

Yes, I know, I'm a bit late with this. I sure hope you didn't miss any of the concerts...

Episode #49: The Unset Trip/Gigs Galore

Preview new tracks and read Opperman's blog at www.myspace.com/chrisopperman.
Opperman's music is available on
iTunes and other digital music services.
Chris Opperman plays
KORG keyboards and uses Finale music notation software.

Well, it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm taking a quick break from working on the 7th movement of "The Porpentine" which is called "The Brightly Shining Sea" to briefly update you all on everything.

So Steve Vai's "Lotus Feet" didn't win for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, but I had an excellent time at the Grammy's and today in my mailbox (courtesy of my friend Alyson) I received a copy of a full-page newspaper article from the Clifton Journal (the newspaper from my hometown) which appeared on the front of the "Arts & Entertainment" section about my music and about the Grammy's.

The story was also picked up by several on-line progressive rock sites, and I would like to quickly thank Laurel Fishman and Jason Feinberg who really helped me get the word out.

Now, some live dates:

2006/03/01 Warren Cuccurullo @ The Viper Room - 11:30 pm

Guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, formerly of Frank Zappa's band (Joe's Garage-era), Missing Persons, and Duran Duran will be performing on March 1st with his ImAgiNEoRKeStRa which will also include former Zappa bandmates including superstar drummer Terry Bozzio (!), Peter Wolf, and a host of other people including myself.  The set list needs to remain a surprise, but it's going to be a very fun (and very bizarre) show!

2006/03/04 OppyArt @ The Bohemian Shindig - 8pm - 1am

The first ever gallery featuring my artwork will be at the sophomore installment of the Acoustic Playhouse's Bohemian Shindig.  I will be displaying a few of my paintings and drawings at this event alongside some of my favorite local painters including T.J. Moore (who painted the cover of "Beyond the Foggy Highway") and Lisa Bloodgood.

2006/03/29 SPECIAL OPPS LIVE: Knitting Factory - Alterknit Lounge - 9pm

It's been a while since we performed, but that's mostly because I've been in the shed working on a lot of new music which we will be debuting at this show, including "That You Didn't Say Yesterday," selections from "The Porpentine," and a new song about how much fun it isn't to try to date girls in Los Angeles called "Brenda, You're a Coward."  It's going to be a really good time and it would mean a lot to me personally to see you there.

Okay, I can't stand being away from "The Brightly Shining Sea" anymore.  So it's back to the piano with me.  Music is the best.

BRAND-NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

  • frank zappa: don't you want a man like me?
        (2006, 2cd-bootleg, japan, howard carter)
    • Yep, brand-new and out of Japan.
I haven't heard it yet, but I do have an audience recording of this concert and that sounds great.
It features Bianco on vocals; a superb version of 'You didn't try to call me".

DOOT!

2006 03 02, a message from Cholly Hoss Productions

Heya DOOT fans,
In typical DOOT fashion we are a little late with the update. What's new you ask? Well, pretty much everything is new. If you saw the Cafe 9 or Buttonwood shows in December you should come out and see us this spring, because it is a very different show. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the May shows are very different from the March shows. And with that, here's the poop on the upcoming dates:

We have a gig at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT on Friday March 3. The show is early, scheduled from 5:30-7:30PM
http://www.mattatuckmuseum.org/

We will be joined by Andre Cholmondeley (of Project/Object fame http://projectobject.com ) on guitar, synth, samples, madness...

If you miss that then you can catch us later in the month at Brass City Records http://pages.cthome.net/bcrgraphics/ on March 25th at 7pm-ish. We will have a mailing in the next week with all the details.

You can keep up with all the latest at our site http://chollyhoss.com/doot/
Gig listings, links, mp3's.. everything a growing body needs.

If you want off the mailing list or know someone who wants ON the list, drop us a line at info@chollyhoss.com

Until then, keep puttin' the funk in your trunk.
