DELETED

Around 1986, Christophe Petchanatz (of Klimperei fame) had a band called Deleted. Their "Well" album, that they released on tape, has been reissued on CDR.

http://klimperei.free.fr/history/deleted/index.htm

KLIMPEREI

French label Underground Productions has re-released the first Klimperei tape (from 1987) on cdr.
The Klimperei website says:
This music is often described as « toy-music, naïve, acoustic, experimental, minimal, childish, neo-classic, bizarre, avant-garde, lunaire...  French toy-pop. »

And who am I to argue with that.

I like it. It took me to places where I hadn't been before.

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT

Remember that I told you that you could order new material from the Rudy Schwartz Project?
Well, I've got some good news and I've got some bad news. The bad news is that Joe Newman (aka RSP) isn't making any new music; the good news is that he is making some of his older material available on CDR. And some of it hadn't been released before.

A reissue of the famous album from 1990 on Musical Tragedies. Essential stuff.

This is really nice. It's some sort of 'best of' album, like one big puzzle with all the different songs pasted into one big piece.

This is the early RSP material. Dating back to 1984, it gives a nice idea what Joe's first tapes sounded like.

If you want to listen to one album by RSP, you have to try "Don't Get Charred... Get Puffy!". Originally released as a CD on the German Musical Tragedies label in 1992, this album is a classic.
Also included, is Joe's excellent arrangement of Zappa's 'Black Page', an arrangement that has been used (and recorded) by The Meridian Arts Ensemble as well.
Music fans will be pleased to hear that this album is available again.

And there's more. The two "Droplets On The Rim" volumes present outtakes, live pieces, rehearsals and more from Joe Newman and from the various bands that he performed with in the early and mid eighties.
This is excellent stuff.
Volume two also includes a little dittie that was recorded in 2005 !
As Joe says in the liner notes: "...what may well be the last gasp of the Rudy Schwartz Project."

Snakefinger and Zappa fans will love 'Man In The Dark Sedan' as recorded by Joe Newman on his 4-track, and 'Pygmy Twylyte' performed by The Politicians, both from around 1984.

OZIT / MORPHEUS RECORDS

Ozit / Morpheus Records in the company behind (a.o.) the latest Captain Beefheart albums...
These two new books are collections of articles, writings, from various sources.
Both books have been published in a limited, numbered edition.

No further comment necessary. Food for collectors.

A 1978 MAGAZINE COVER

Frank Zappa on the cover of French "Best" magazine, dated february 1978.
Archive material.
It's a funny interview as the journalist probably had to guess how he had to write the names of the new bandmembers. Please meet Tony Mars, Adrien Balloo and Pat O' Haren...
But besides that, it's an interesting article.

FAT MAW ROONEY

October 29, 2005, Fat Maw Rooney performed Frank Zappa's 'Muffin Man' in concert at the 'Blackhorse Tavern' in Winona, MN, USA.

JOE'S XMASAGE

  • frank zappa: joe's xmasage  (75)
        (2005, cd, usa, vaultarnative records)
    • "Joe's Xmasage" is the third album in Joe's series.

      I love it.

It's great to hear some of the early things that Zappa was involved in.
Keep it going, Joe. We want more.

      www.zappa.com

ANOTHER FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEG

This "1991" factory pressed bootleg CD album is a very limited edition of 300 copies. 50 copies were released as a digipack, the other 250 exist as a 'jewel case' edition.
This is the second release on Peak Abu Records.

FREAK KITCHEN

The latest Mattias Eklundh album made me listen back to the albums that he made with Freak Kitchen. As you may know, Freak Kitchen is a rather heavy band. It's hardrock with Eklundh on stunt guitar.  Nothing like a dose of Freak Kitchen on a Sunday morning.
The band has performed Frank Zappa's 'My Guitar Wants...' in concert, but unfortunately never released it on album.

Here's the discography, including pictures.

20060121

MICKY JONES

  • micky jones with ? and the muffinmen: s/t
        (2005, cd, uk, gpcd004)
    • Former Man guitar player Micky Jones has released an album with concert recordings. The first part is Micky Jones with his band "?", the second part has Micky as special guest during a Muffin Men / J.C.Black concert where they perform Frank Zappa's 'King Kong' and 'Willie The Pimp'.

      Excellent stuff.
"?" shows the soulful & Hendrix-guitar side of Micky Jones, whereas the MM concert has Micky jammin' on a couple of great Zappa tunes.

      One great album.

-- info & more: Luc Reniers

ROBERT KRAMER

  • robert kramer: legacy of love
        (2005, cd, usa, dimension1records)
    • "Legacy Of Love" is an impressive album. Straight-forward rock ballads with nice guitar work and excellent vocals.
The reason for it's appearance in the UM files is that none other then Napoleon Murphy Brock sings (co-)lead on 'Place In My Heart' and that he added backing vocals and flute to 'Water Into Wine', the latter one also featuring the beautiful voice of Naseem.

I would have liked to have heard a bit more of Napoleon's singing, but still, an impressive album.

NEIL SADLER

  • neil sadler: theory of forms
(1999, cd, usa, bleeding arts ba 10012)
    • This is not a new album, but I thought I'd stick it in anyway.
As it's a new entry in UM, and this is a top fusion album on which quite a number of Zappa alumni take part.
Mike Keneally, Walt, Steve and Bruce Fowler plus Kurt McGettrick. Add Bryan Beller, Joel Woods and Neil Sadler and the band is complete.

      An absolute must-have.

ALEX HARVEY

  • alex harvey: the joker is wild  (4)
        (2005, cd, ger, walhalla)
    • Alex Harvey's 1972 "The Joker Is Wild" album has been re-issued on CD on the german Walhalla label.
It includes the fabulous 'Hare Krishna / Willie The Pimp' track.
The album that you might know as "This Is The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" actually is a re-edition of this "The Joker Is Wild" album.

NEONFIRE

  • neonfire: neonfire
(2005, cd, usa, crossfire publications 9502-2)
    • Neonfire is Greg Russo's musical project. You should be familiar with Greg Russo as he is the writer of the excellen "Cosmik Debris" book.
For this self-titled album, Greg got a hand from some of his friends. Frank's sister Candy Zappa and her friend Nolan Porter take care of the lead vocals on most of the tracks. Project/Object guitarist André Cholmondeley is omnipresent and his P/O collegue, drummer Glenn Leonard takes care of most of the drum parts. One of the songs has fellow Crossfire artists The Tornadoes as band. But the most notable moments come from the incredible Napoleon Murphy Brock (lead vocals on three tracks) and from Joe Denizon (superb violin) who guests on one track.

The album has an (early) seventies sound to it. It's a nice album that includes some very impressive moments.

ADRIAN BELEW

Dimeadozen had an excellent Adrian Belew show a little while back. It's a show from 1993. Adrian Belew solo on acoustic guitar. King Crimson, Bowie, Zappa, The Beatles, they're all there:

THE GRANDE MOTHERS RE:INVENTED  2006

NEW NEWS 1 - New guitarist

The Grande Mothers are proud to announce that they have a new guitarist:  MIROSLAV TADIC,

Miroslav is not only playing his own amazing solos, but he also had to learn the ZAPPA book, by  transcribing, and learning all of the ZAPPA pieces performed by the Grande Mothers

He has been undergoing hours and hours of rehearsals with the Grande Mothers Re:Invented and they will be hitting the stage in 2006 in the United States, Europe
and Canada
see Miroslavs' BIO below

In their January 1997 issue, the editors of GUITAR PLAYER magazine voted Miroslav Tadic one of the world's thirty most radical and individual guitarists.

Tadic completed his formal education in the United States after studying in Italy and his native Yugoslavia. He has performed and recorded in a wide variety of settings and musical styles, ranging from music of the Baroque and Classical periods to blues, jazz, and rock.

Tadic's performing and recording credits include projects with:
Terry Riley, the Los Angeles Opera with Placido Domingo, Howard Levy, Joachim Kühn, Dusan Bogdanovic, Vlatko Stefanovski, Theodosii Spasov, Kudsi Erguner, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, L. Shankar, Markus Stockhausen, Maria João, David Torn and Jack Bruce, among others.

He is frequently heard in Europe, Japan and the United States. In 1986 Miroslav met drummer Mark Nauseef and the master of sound sculpting and recording Walter Quintus. Their collaboration has resulted in a great number of recordings and projects, which continue today and into the future.

In recent years Tadic has concentrated on developing an approach to improvisation which combines and juxtaposes musical material drawn from many diverse sources, including Baroque, European classical and North Indian classical music, Eastern European folk traditions, blues, jazz, and rock. He is noted for his pioneering work in applying the elements of classical and flamenco techniques to the electric guitar.

Miroslav's numerous recordings on ENJA Records, CMP Records, M.A Recordings, Omagatoki and Third Ear Music labels have won international critical acclaim. He has written music for a number of award-winning experimental film, theater, and dance works. Since 1985 he has been teaching at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles.

ALEX SNOUFFER

sad news from beefheart.com :

Alex Snouffer

John French sent us news of the death of Alex Snouffer, aka Alex St Claire, guitarist, drummer and a founder member of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.

John wrote, "I talked with Jerry Handley, who was probably the closest to Alex. Jerry just lost his Dad and Alex was at the funeral a couple of weeks ago. We reminisced about the early bands that were the forerunners of the Magic Band. "

Steve Froy's full obituary for Alex Snouffer was added to the beefheart.com site on 9 January.

CHRIS OPPERMAN

  • chris opperman: beyond the foggy highway
(2005, cd, usa, purple cow records pcr 005)
    • "Beyond The Foggy Highway" is the latest Chris Opperman album. It presents recordings of live performances from 2002 to 2004, each time in different line-ups.
The music is an excellent blend of improvised music, contemporary classical music and jazz. One of my favourite tracks is called "Miles Behind", where Andre Lafosse plays some spacy (David Gilmour) guitar licks against Chris Opperman's piano melody. Beautiful.
A lot of the compositions on this album will take you on a trip. You just have to close your eyes.

"Beyond The Foggy Highway" is not an easy album. You will definitely need multiple listening sessions, but once you get into it, you can't do without it.
      A very fine album indeed.

BOGUS POMP

2006/01/04 Fred Hemmer says

Hi Gang,

Well, the holidays are over but the party is just beginning. After an exciting 2005 it looks like Bogus Pomp will be even busier in 2006.

The following dates are booked:

  • 2006/01/21 Bogus Pomp - concert 'State Theater' in St. Petersburg, FL, usa

  • 2006/02/18 Bogus Pomp - concert 'Java Junction', Clearwater, FL, usa

  • 2006/04/08 Bogus Pomp - concert 'Java Junction', Clearwater, FL, usa

In addition the following plans are being discussed:

Zappaween in St. Petersburg possibly with an ex-Zappa band member you all know

We are trying to pull off another "big" event. Discussions are underway for a Bogus Pomp Orchestra show here with an attempt to try to do the show elsewhere too. Also it looks like BP may play Zappanale in Germany in 2007.

To make these extra events happen we are looking to once again raise funds that will cover the loss that the band incurs. Traveling expenses for rehearsals and the hiring of additional musicians takes money that is not covered by ticket sales. We have been fortunate that individuals stepped up and provided financial support over the last two years to allow the band to continue. I think that almost everybody who donated the first year were repeats last year. And we are lucky the core band plays for what amounts to be peanuts!

So, we are looking for sponsors and at this time we can offer the following:

For a $200 contribution you get-

1- Two priority admissions to the State Theater show January 21. You will get in early to grab the balcony or front floor area.

2- Two admissions to the Java Junction February 18 show. (We can't offer any deal for the April 8 show as BP is playing as part of a show with other bands controlled by a promoter.)

3- Purchase priority for any of the other shows that may be booked.

4- At times we have given out special goodies like shirts and Zappanale DVD's.

5- And general satisfaction that you helped keep Zappa music alive!

Checks should be payable to "Bogus Pomp Fund" and sent to me at:

Fred Hemmer
11970 7th St East
Treasure Island, FL 33706

All money that has been collected has been used to support band expenses and rehearsals only.

If anybody has any questions please contact me.

Thanks for your support,

-- Fred

JOHN TRUBEE

MONEY FOR STUNTED VULGARIANS

"Those who use money as the ultimate evaluating mechanism
for everything in life lack the capacity to invent their own values
and to perceive anything other than money as a value. By default
they adopt the common, vulgar value system of everyone else,
wealthy and impoverished, who lusts after money. This is the default
mechanism of those who lack imagination; of those who
thoughtlessly ape all the other idiots surrounding them.
Devoid of reflection, devoid of imagination, the overarching default
value for common, mediocre vulgarians always is MONEY.

Donald Trump and those in his rarified, upper-crust class are
indistinguishable from lowlife drug dealer punk ganstas
down at the ghetto pool hall when the central, underlying
motive of most of their behaviors is analyzed:
GETTING MONEY.

Both rich and poor who esteem money above all else are boring,
stunted vulgarians unworthy of serious consideration."

You Do Not Possess The Keys To Ecstasy
Copyright c 2005 John Trubee

You do not possess the keys to ecstasy;
Heaven resides within my head.
You strut in sexual glory yet offer me nothing;
Why ought I to dog after you?

I choose to bicycle in freedom
To traipse misty morning shores
devoid of idiot people
To ride in leaf-dappled sunlight
on paths not taken
To huff uphill to watch the sun fall down
To sing insane songs and hum humanistic hymns
no one will ever hear

I conquered worlds beyond imagining
Made myriad strangers guffaw
Sojourned across a continent into the sun
Vomited mad antipoetry on uncomprehending ninnies
Tussled with and victoried over recalcitrant jerks

Yet still to the shopping pygmies
I remain an invisible unknown
Of no import or concern
Only worthy of pushing out of the way
To the next exciting department store sales bargain

Where you derived the notion
That your caprice of withheld ecstasies
will submit me to heel
I do not know--
But it is false.

MARTY PERELLIS

info from Mike

I just noticed the request for information on Marty Perellis, and I don't really know much about him, but I thought I might contribute the tidbit that it was, I THINK, Mr. Perellis who played the imaginary trombone solo in "King Kong" in the "Baby Snakes" movie.

A STUMUK UPDATE

2005/12/--, a message from Stumuk's brother

I stumbled across your United Mutations web site and found your information on my brother 'Stumuk', aka Bill Nugent. Your information was for the most part correct. Bill is alive and well and living alternately in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the San Bernadino Mountains of Southern California. He would love to hear from his fans and is always looking for new gigs with new bands. He can be reached at ftr555.comcast.net

Insular mediocrities handing each other awards

Mariah Carey struts with yet another award from
some ceremony or another (they don't matter)
Invented by the inner circle of friends and bed partners
for their inner circle of friends and bed partners

What does it have to do with us?
Why ought I invest the invaluable time
of my life to observe this excrement?

I rag on the asshole celebrities only because
I continue to be dismayed by the great number
of otherwise intelligent people
revering these boring pigs.

I remain forever dismayed by the mindlessness
suffocating this world.

I always think it can't get more stupid
But it always does.

Photogenic vacuities with nothing of value to express
mass mailing press releases relating with whom
they commingle their genitals today--
this is supposed to interest and excite us?

Rolling Stone reprints press releases
of uninteresting, aspiring idols who communicate
nothing new or of value
Rolling Stone used to be hip
but so long ago no one remembers.

Mickey Rourke only marginally entertains me
due to his plastic surgery disasters
and his extreme promiscuity
(what magic words con these women I want to know;
I have no such luck)

Of what value is this to me?
So I can spew a new crap rant/antipoem to my friends.

Otherwise intelligent people worship contrived idols
because religion is dead
but the innate need of humans to worship thrives,
hence the genital antics of Julia Roberts enthrall millions
and this otherwise boring nonentity
enjoys a lucrative career
supplanting deceased God.

Please DO something fascinating with your brief time
on this earth
Stop passively observing trivialities
Life is too great for that
Smash your TV
and let the cast of 'Friends' writhe in Hell for eternity.

OSSI DURI

Oscar Bianco was kind enough to send the data for the latest Ossi Duri album:

WEIRDO NAFFN

For me, the latest edition of the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan was an absolute highlight of 2005. One of my finest memories is having a relaxed chat with Michael Krampe, guitar player and mastermind of Weirdo Naffn.
Not only did Weirdo Naffn give a remarkable performance, Michael turned out to be a great chap as well.

If you're in for some laid-back, progressive rock, you should give Weirdo Naffn a try. Just listen to that guitar tone...

http://www.weirdonaffn.de/

As some sort of X-mas present, the Weirdo Naffn site has a bunch of tracks available as mp3 downloads. So check it out. The band has a number of CDRs available as well.

Zappa is never far away.

  • weirdo naffn: crazy ahmed's instramental favoritz
        (1999, cdr, ger, private release)
    • "Carzy Ahmed's Instramental Favoritz" is Weirdo Naffn's first release. In this case, it's Mr.Weirdo Naffn, Michael Krampe, who goes all the way. Like the title says, these are all instrumental tracks: heavy lead guitar, with a backing band. It sounds like one big jam, one good big jam. Lots of Zappa, Santana and jam band influences on this one.
      Food for guitarists.
  • weirdo naffn: for a fistfull of döner
        (2002, cdr, ger, private release)
    • The Weirdo Naffn radio special on Radio Z. 100. Interviews and music. Broadcast on 2002/06/23. If you can understand German, this will give you a rather fine impression of what Weirdo Naffn is about.

ANOTHER NEW FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEG

If they keep on going like this, 2006 will become a very impressive year. This new 3-CD bootleg album includes two 1974 shows.

Haven't heard it yet, but it looks like this:

MATTIAS IA EKLUNDH

  • mattias ia eklundh: freak guitar - the road less traveled
(2005, cd, france, replica records rpl028)
    • "Freak Guitar - The Road Less Traveled" is Mattias IA Eklundh's second solo album. It's another exceptional album: virtuosity combined with zappa-esque humour and compositional skills.
There's just so much great music on this album. The title songs immediately sets the tone: a nice little melody played with lots of feedback and natural harmonics. 'There's no money in jazz' is a mix of death metal drumming with a speedy fusion guitar, and it just goes on. There are a lot of experiments on this album, and most of them turn out really pretty.

His previous album "Freak Guitar" included a coverversion of Zappa's 'The Black Page'. On this album, Mattias takes it a bit further: '
Asteroid 3834' (remember Zappafrank) has all the Zappa/Vai riffs and rhythms that we're so fond of. Even if it's on top of a disco beat.

      Essential stuff.

MUZIQ

I think I already told you about the Zappa special in French Muziq magazine. Well, now that I have looked into it, I can only say that this belongs on your shelf, alongside the Pulse special and Guitar Player's "Definitive Tribute" and "Zappa!" specials.
  • musiq
        (2005/12, mag, fr)

    • an article on the Nasal Retentive Orchestra
    • a 1-page article on Pierrejean Gaucher
    • a 16-page special on Zappa
      • You Can Do That With Frank Anytime by Noadya Arnoux

Not forgetting the superb pictures that are included alongside the articles.

DRUMBO AND ROCKETTE RECORDING NEW MATERIAL

audihaun says: "I recently received a message from John Drumbo French to update me on progress with his new recordings"

So here Rockette and I are at Proper Record's wonderful new studio recording my new CD "City of Refuge" which is basically a Magic Band influenced compilation of music I've put together over the last year and a half.

I'm listening to Rockette put a bass line on a song called "Maybe That'll Teach Ya" which is based loosely on a jam that was done by Don, Doug Moon, and myself. I used the Moon riff and Don's line "Maybe That'll Teach Ya" and wrote a whole song around it about the futility of revenge. It's a more bluesy kind of simple piece.

I don't think Mark or I have ever sounded better together. This has been a lot of fun and I'm sure that Beefheart fans will be pleased as this will fill a particular need for new fresh material in the style of the Magic Band. I started getting these ideas about six months into the project, I suppose, as a result of the complete saturation I was undergoing to achieve a reasonable MB sound.

So, just thought I'd update you.

Gotta go, John French

NEW FRANK ZAPPA VINYL BOOTLEG

  • frank zappa: instrumental & improvisations
        (2005, lp, ??, nq-002)
    • 80 copies on red wax
      99 copies on blue wax
      50 copies on multi-colored wax
    • I haven't actually seen this one yet. As you can see by the print run, this will be a pretty hard-to-find album.

Extra info on this album is very welcome. I only know that the album should include recordings from the 1972/12/09 Portland concert, and from the 1973/10/26 Austin concert.

I'm still looking for a copy, so if anyone can help me out...
