* Beyond the Foggy Highway SHIPPING NOW!

Hello!  This is just a brief note to let you all know that I spent my weekend drawing pictures and signing CD's for all of you cool people who pre-ordered the live album!  The CD's came on Friday and I'm VERY pleased with how it all came out.  It's a very cool album and features the immense musicianship of Andre LaFosse, Jen Kuhn, Isaac Slape, Kevin Dooley, Kahlil Sabbagh, Dann Friedman, Todd Carey, and singer/songwriter Kat Parsons.  We will be doing some features on oppymusic.com on the album in the coming months and if you would like to write a fan review for the website, we will post your review!

If you'd still like to get your "pre-order" in, you have about a week left before I stop signing them, so you can either e-mail me here or order on-line at oppymusic.com and I'll take care of you.

I hope that you're all doing well and that everyone's families are safe with all the wacky weather and what-not.

Also, Special Opps WILL be performing on Sunday, November 20th, which is my birthday, at a location yet to be announced.  With the live album finally out and everything, we'll have lots to celebrate.

Everybody booze up and riot for the Lord.

-- Chris Opperman

Hi Peter, I don't know if UM has a spot for THIS kind of thing, but here is a Zappa hate site! Jesus is Savior .com lists the Evils in
America! It's quite amusing, actually.

BOGUS POMP

ZAPPAWEEN 10 ... Halloween tradition lives on!!! ... Featuring Bogus Pomp - Saturday - October 29th

2005/10/29 Bogus Pomp - concert 'bourbon street', newport richey, tampa bay, usa

It's a rare thing when a community embraces a band in such a way as the Tampa Bay music scene has embraced Bogus Pomp. This band was started as a project just for fun and over the last 11 years it has evolved and grown into a well-respected institution of musical excellence. This Halloween weekend, Bogus Pomp will have their 10th annual ZAPPAWEEN festival concert and mark a decade of celebrating the incredible music of Frank Zappa. Bogus Pomp performs the late master's work in a way that has become very endeared to serious Zappa fans all over the world. Bogus Pomp offers something you just can't get anymore,... anywhere.... well, except in Tampa Bay. They offer the stylish and complex music of Frank Zappa performed in a very true-to-form way with precision and conviction. Since this will be ZAPPAWEEN 10, there will be some serious buffoonery to go along with the serious performance. Bogus Pomp keeps Halloween tradition alive with lots of laughs and a costume contest with crazy prizes. Zappaween has become such an amazing annual event and this 10 year anniversary should be the best yet. Zappaween 10 happens on Saturday, October 29th at Bourbon Street, 4331 U.S. Highway 19 in Newport Richey. Tickets are $15. Doors at 8:30pm, showtime at 9:30pm. As always, audio and video recording devices are welcomed and encouraged.

Don't forget to come dressed in costume. The costume contest winners will be awarded special prizes including an autographed guitar for first place.

A limited amount of DVD's from their Zappanale show in Germany will be available.

Jerry will be also be updating everybody with preliminary details about an exciting 2006 schedule. Sponsorships that guarantee choice seats and other goodies will again be available.

SHEIK YERBOUTI

  • sheik yerbouti: ouch patrol
(2005, cd, ger, goodlife records sycd0501)
    • October 2004, German band Sheik Yerbouti did a couple of concerts with none other than Napoleon Murphy Brock.
The results of this can be found on "Ouch Patrol". A great album for which the guys from Sheik Yerbouti also took a horn section on the road.

They're all here. All the tracks that have Napoleon's mark on them: Village Of The Sun, Penguin In Bondage, The Evil Prince...

Sheik Yerbouti was in great shape. Having the great Napoleon Murphy Brock as a special guest, makes this recording a must-have for every Zappa fan !

ZAPPA IN 1993 PLAYBOY

  • The August 1993 issue of the German Playboy edition included a 6-page article / interview with Frank Zappa by David Sheff.

I added the picture (Anna Smith on the cover...) to the Zappa magazine specials & articles section.

ANOTHER ZAPPA BOOTLEG

  • frank zappa: united mothers in manchester of invention
         (2005, 2cd-bootleg, ??, zft 002 / 003)
    • A new Frank Zappa bootleg has entered the circuit. "United Mothers In Manchester Of Invention" presents the 1979/02/12 concert in the 'Apollo Theater' in Manchester, UK, plus a couple of tracks from the so-called "Impossible Album".

The concert has been around in the trade circuit for a while. And more recently an excellent sounding mix of a sbd & audience tape has been made available on the Zappateers site.

This release is only for the die-hard collectors.
Numbered, limited edition of 600 copies.

THE RESIDENTS

There's a new Residents album scheduled. It's called "The Way We Were", and the first run will carry an extra DVD.

In the meantime, The EyeBalled ones have rereleased their classic "The Third Reich 'n Roll" album on Mute Records.
Superb packaging for a classic album, including some great back-ground info - it'll make you want to visit Rather Ripped Records in San Fran...

Rumour has it that Mute will soon be releasing some sort of 'mole-box'. Can't wait for that one.

THE OREGON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Only recently, an audience recording of a fabulous Zappa tribute concert made its entry into the trade circuit:

1995/04/05, The Oregon Symphony Orchestra together with The Band From Utopia and The Persuasions, performed a night of Zappa music in Portland, Oregon. Take note that for this concert, Steve Vai played the guitar for the BFU.

THE TROUPE

The Troupe will be performing two additional shows of Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" in Amsterdam, NL:
  • 2005/10/23 The Troupe - concert 'de kleine komedie', amsterdam, the netherlands

  • 2005/10/24 The Troupe - concert 'de kleine komedie', amsterdam, the netherlands

in dutch, it goes like this:

The Troupe (Egon Kracht, Jeroen Zijlstra, Frans van Deursen e.a.)
DE KLEINE KOMEDIE
Amstel 56-58, 1017 AC Amsterdam, kassa: 020-624 05 34

GORKY PARK

  • gorky park: gorky park II - moscow calling
        (1993, cd, usa, m.i.r. records)
    • I'm not sure of the date, but I think that this album was released on m.i.r. records in 1993. This "special russian version" is probably from 1999 (?).
American Orientated Rock, as played by a Russian band. Frank Zappa helped the band with their introduction in the States and Dweezil Zappa performed "additional guitars" on this album.

        (2005, cd, bel, universal)
    • There's a new dEUS album out. "Pocket Revolution". Those of you who are unfamiliar with dEUS should really check them out.

Really good. With Mauro 'Evil Superstars' Pawlowski on guitar and Stef Kamil Carlens (Zita Swoon) as guest vocalist on a couple of tracks.
I'm pretty convinced that it can't get better than this.
"Pocket Revolution" is a very well-balanced album: beautiful melodies, but with a sharp edge.
      This is really good...

JAN TURKENBURG

New free download on WM Recordings:

After A fifth of Splogman and Splogman’s sixth sense Jan Turkenburg is going back in time with "4 Tributes to 365 days and 1 bonus". Although on both previous releases some tracks contained samples of Otis Fodder's 365 Days project (2003) the first four of these cut and paste pieces were never released apart from a temporary link on the project's website.

The plan was to make 7 tributes using samples from different months in the project, but after the sixth Jan was too busy working on his own slightly more modest follow up on Fodder’s project: 52 Weeks.
For this release he finally finished the seventh tribute using samples of the last three months of 365 days. This is the "bonus".

ZAPPA ON COVER OF GUITAR & BASS

  • guitar & bass
        (2005/10, mag, uk)
    • The October issue of Guitar & Bass includes an interview with Dweezil & Ahmet regarding the Zappa plays Zappa tour. We've all heared that it has been postponed, so this is a bit anachrostic, but what the heck.
It has Uncle Frank on the cover, and that's a good thing.

ACADEMY ZAPPA

  • academy zappa - proceedings of the first international conference of esemplastic zappology
    • edited by bend watson and esther leslie
          (2005, book, uk, saf publishing)
    • Almost two years ago, January 2004, the First International Conference of Esemplastic Zappology (ICE-Z) was held in London. Visitors were able to listen to lectures by an international selection of Zappologists.
"Academy Zappa" collects these papers. "The Treatment of Random Pitches in Frank Zappa's 'Approximate' by Richared Hemming, "Watermelon in Easter Hay: The Function of the Reverb Unit & the Poverty of the Individual Spirit" by T.H.F. Drenching, ... They're all there.

What I like about Zappa's music, is that you can keep on listening to it. There's always new things to discover. The same can be said of his lyrics. Everyone has his own opinion and/or explanation of why and what Zappa said.
That's why it's such fun to read "Acadamy Zappa". This collection of  papers will take you on paths that you have never walked before.
Try it. It's good for you.

See you tomorrow with more news

BLAST

The picture below shows Blast (Dirk Bruinsma, Pad Conca, Fabrizio Spera and Frank Crijns) in concert at the 'Plusetage' in Baarle Nassau, NL on 2005/10/0.
Picture taken by Ive H.

Quite experimental music, but very enjoyable.

The guys have a new album out on Recommended Records. Their previous albums (except for their first one) are out on / available from Cuneiform.

ORGANISSIMO

  • organissimo: this is the place
(2005, cd, usa, big 'o' records)
    • Jim Alfredson on Hammond B3 (love that sound), Joe Gloss on some fat-sounding jazz guitar and Randy Marsh on drums.
"This Is The Place" presents a healthy dose of groovy, swinging jazz. When you close your eyes, you wonder what's keeping Snoopy and Charlie Brown (hey, I like Vince Guaraldi!).
I like this one, I like it a lot.
And yes, it includes Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia', but this is the odd one out as this is the only track that is not composed by Organissimo. And it's also the only track where Joe Gloss has put some fuzz in his guitar tone. Great version though...

THE MUFFIN MEN

The Muffin Men will tour Germany (plus one gig in Belgium), starting one of the next days:

CHAD WACKERMAN

  • chad wackerman: legs eleven
(2003, cd, australia, chad wackerman cwcd-4)
    • Chad Wackerman issued his 4th solo album in 2003. "Legs Eleven" features the same musicians as his "Scream" album from 1999: James Muller on guitar, Daryl Pratt on vibraphone and marimba and Leon Gaer on bass. If you liked "Scream", you'll like "Legs Eleven" even better.
This is an excellent jazz album. Contemporary jazz à la Mike Stern. All compositions written by Chad Wackerman, and displaying the fine talents of his fellow musicians.

THE WRONG OBJECT

I went to the concert by The Wrong Object, feat. Elton Dean, in Eindhoven, NL on Monday 2005/10/10. Actually, it was only The Wrong Object as Elton Dean had gotten really sick. Even without mister Dean, the concert was great and the band adjusted the setlist so that there was even room for some Zappa compositions.
The gig was broadcast live on the internet, and can still be watched at: http://www.citytv.nl/. Check it out.

If Elton Dean recovers in time, the Paris concert will take place as scheduled.
Ten days later, The Wrong Object will be playing some concerts with Harry Beckett (of Charles Mingus, Jah Wobble and Working Week fame).

  • 2005/10/18 the Wrong Object, feat.Elton Dean - concert 'Glaz'Art', Paris, France

  • 2005/10/27 the Wrong Object, feat. Harry Beckett - concert 'l'aquilone', liège, belgium

  • 2005/10/28 the Wrong Object, feat. Harry Beckett - concert mechelen, Belgium, feat. Harry Beckett (afternoon - private gig)

2005/10/28 the Wrong Object, feat. Harry Beckett – concert ‘Jazzzolder’, Mechelen, Belgium

  • 2005/11/04 the Wrong Object - concert 'rockhal', esch/alzette, luxembourg

  • 2005/11/12 the Wrong Object - concert "Zappadag", 'jeugdhuis TNT', genk, belgium

MATS / MORGAN BAND

  • mats / morgan band: thanks for flying with us
        (2005, cd, usa, cuneiform)
    • May 4, 2005, I saw a very impressive concert by the Mats / Morgan Band at the 'Magasin 4' club in Brussels, Belgium. I had seen them at Zappanale in 2004, but this Brussels concert really blew me away. The band played a couple of pieces that I wasn't familiar with, making me very curious for their next album.
And here it is. "Thanks for flying with us" has been released on Cuneiform records and it's Mats and Morgan's best record as of yet.
The first track, 'Sinus', immediately sets the tone: you're entering the world of Mats and Morgan. It's groovy, but in every imaginable rhythm; it's melodic but with nice angular turns.
Essential listening. This is a superb album. (most definitely in my top 5 of 2005 - and I know that it's only october).

'It's Music, Jim, but not as we know it'.

ZAPPATEERS, ANYONE ?

The Jazzwerkstatt is forum for a group of musicians from Vienna. The last couple of months, they've performed some Zappa:

JAZZWERKSTATT: Salesny, Schabata & Preuschl
2005/07/01 concert vienna, austria

Clemens Salesny (as, bcl), Woody Schabata (vib) & Raphael Preuschl (b) performed Zappa's 'Twenty Small Cigars'.

JAZZWERKSTATT: JAZZMESSE
2005/07/03 concert 'porgy & bess', vienna, austria
  • Medley (Take Your Clothes Off-What's The Ugliest Part-Let's Make The Water-)
  • What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body (reprise, with preamble)
  • Sofa #1

explained by Hasi:

a Jazzmesse is something like a matinee, as this concert started at about 11 a.m. on a sunday, which is usually the time that the religious performances in churches take place, and Messe is the German word for their ritual.

Here's some extra info on the "Frank Zappa Memorial Barbecue" concert that was held in France a couple of years ago.

PLUSETAGE

'Plusetage' might well be Holland's best kept secret. It's a club, located in Baarle-Nassau, a little village near the border with Belgium, and it offers a stage to a huge variety of artists.

Next week, they're having (a) Blast. Early next year, their program presents Drummers Double Bill (with Corrie van Binsbergen), The Wrong Object, and Palinckx.

  • 2005/10/08 Blast - concert 'Plusetage', Baarle-Nassau, The Netherlands
  • 2006/01/14 Drummers Double Bill (with Corrie van Binsbergen) - concert 'Plusetage', Baarle-Nassau, The Netherlands

In-between concerts. Here's a quick update.

STEVE VAI / THE BREED

I went to see Steve Vai in concert in Antwerp (Belgium) yesterday. Driving to the concert, my pal Jeroen and I were wondering what to expect. Vai has done it all: played with Zappa, performed with some Big Names (Whitesnake, Roth, ...), grew out to be a guitar god, has made fine albums, performed with the Metropole Orchestra, and most important of all: he has written some excellent pieces of music. You don't have to be a guitar player to appreciate his compositions. Just check out Mike Keneally's piano performances of some Vai classics.

Well, whatever what you think of Vai, you missed a hell of a show yesterday. He played for almost three hours (!!), including an acoustic set and room for his Breed pals to play a song of their own. Excellent.

Don't try to call me tonight. I'll be off to Tilburg to catch another one of these.

The Vai tour-dates are in the concert calendar below. Be sure to check them out.

THE ROSA ENSEMBLE

A couple of days ago, I went to see the Rosa Ensemble in Eindhoven, NL.
  • 2005/09/29 concert 'Futura Plaza', Eindhoven, the netherlands

The Rosa Ensemble was responsable for the excellent "Selling Hoovers In Mojave" album that got released earlier this year. It's a Beefheart tribute album, with re-arranged music and dutch vocals. The band had been touring with this program in 2004, but I had never gotten the chance to see them.

Fortunately, the Rosa Ensemble was able to do a small reprise tour in September 2005, and this brought them to Eindhoven.

The location, Futura Plaza, can host a couple of hundred people at maximum. It was sold out. Appearantly, the band had been changed slightly compared to their latest tour, but that didn't show at all. The Rosa Ensemble sounded very, very tight. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a very energetic show.

The set-list looked like this:
oranje klauw * somberland * c-grooot * wortel * 1010 * pepsi III * impro * pepsi IV * dokter dark * alice * pink & brown * blaat en rook * bothering heights * paardenmoord * ape-ma * shake baby shake * neonvleesvrees * blaf
encores: vleerketting plukker * wij zijn niet alleen

I won't go into translating these back into english.  You can check out the album data.
Just for your info: both 'Blaf' and 'Wij Zijn Niet Alleen' are Zappa compositions.

It looks like you won't be able to see the Rosa Ensemble performing "Selling Hoovers..." again any time soon, but you can still get there fabulous album.

Order it at:

Glad to be back. There's loads of info.
These last couple of months of 2005 look very promising.

what happened?

So here's what happened:

August had been fabulous. Especially since Zappanale had been great. The last day of August, however, my computer hard-disk crashed, taking with it a lot of data.
Do I take back-ups? Sure. Every once in a while. And I thought that I was lucky that my previous back-up was from the second of August.
So what did I lose? Lots of e-mail messages, recent changes to this website, and a bunch of things that I was working on... Tough one.
Why did it take that long to recover? Ahh, now that's a good question. It took the specialists a couple of weeks to find out that my hard-disk couldn't be revived. As it was necessary to by a new hard-disk, I used the opportunity to upgrade completely and bought a new computer. At this very moment, I can even read and write DVDRs. And I got rid of my 64k modem and acquired a broadband connection.
(the bad news is that I have to get familiar with all the new soft- and hardware -- I'm pretty sure that it'll take me another bunch of hours before I get this thing working the way I would like it)
