Thanx for the info. Both bands have been added to UM.

MAISIE

  • maisie: the incredible strange choir of paracuwaii
        (1998, cd, italy, snowdonia sd003)

    • Now here is something else. Italian duo Maisie, Alberto Scotti and Cinzia LaFauci, released their "The Incredible Strange Choir Of Paracuwaii" album in 1999. The album features Maisie (of course) but also a lot of their friends, playing the same Maisie compositions. To give an example: 'Silicone', can be found twice on the disc, as performed by Maisie and covered by Nando Meet Corrosion. The music itself is very impressive, very Residents- like, and so it is no surprise that this album also includes a Residents composition. Semolina is performed by Maisie  & Andrea Azzali.
I didn't locate no choir, nor do I know where Paracuwaii is, but this sure is one incredible strange album.
      I love it.

LEBOCAL: HOMMAGE A FRANK ZAPPA

October 16, 2004
There's quite a chunck of news. I tried spicing it up a bit with some extra pictures...
Talk again to you in a couple of days... Yep, there's more to come.

FOOL MOON

I received an e-mail from François Briquet (Fool Moon guitarist), saying that Fool Moon is about to release a new album.
I was a bit ashamed to notice that the "Fool Moon" entry in UM was incomplete, so I added line-up & tracklisting.
  • fool moon: fool moon
        (1994, cd, france, kzl 150502)

    • The Fool Moon debut album includes Frank Zappa's 'More Trouble Comin' Every Day' as well as a bunch of other classics. Read Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Lowell George (!!), Willie Dixon and many more.

Those of you who have difficulties locating this fine album, should contact:
      foolmon@wanadoo.fr

TONY DURAN

In the sixties, Tony Duran played tenor sax with The Premiers, an east side Chicano rock group. He is mentioned in the Mark Guerrero website at <http://www.markguerrero.net/11.html>.
A very fine picture can be found at <http://www.markguerrero.net/pa5.html>.

KLIMPEREI

Klimperei is mentioned in the section "Resifriends", band that play the music of the Residents.

I don't know when or where I got that info, so if anyone can help me out on this...

I do know that Klimperei has a fab looking website at : http://klimperei.free.fr

SUPERCHARGE

  • supercharge: between music and madness
        (1974, lp, uk, ??)

    • The info on the album reads as follows: "In 1974, the Liverpool band Supercharge organised its first commercially available recording "Between Music And Madness". Only a small initial run was produced, and the LP has been unavailable for over 25 years. A number of copies have recently been located, resulting in the production of this CD".

This is an excellent, funky album and I'm not only taking about the Zappa piece. This is funky party music. A couple of originals mixed with cover tunes makes "Between Music And Madness" a must-have. I don't know what happened to Albie Donnelly or to his Supercharge band, but I do know that this album needs your attention.

THE KENEALLIST - october 8, 2004

THE KENEALLIST by Mike Keneally
3:39 PM   Oct. 8 '04

http://www.keneally.com
http://www.radiokeneally.com

Hello, everyone.  This is a quick “hello, “ just me checking in after a very busy September with a lot of touring activity.  The Universe Will Provide has been in stores for a few weeks and is getting outrageous press response, and Dog will be in stores November 16.  There'll be an article about me and the new albums in the January issue of Guitar Player - there was a fantastic review of TUWP in the last issue - and plenty of other upcoming press as well.   Hooray!

And, soon, yet another new album!:  Vai - Piano Reductions Vol. 1 will finally see release in November.  This is the solo piano album of Steve Vai compositions which I recorded in 1999.  I'm pretty profoundly thrilled with the album.  Copies will be available for sale from our merchandising site, http://www.moosemart.com, starting in November, and tracks from the album will be previewed at http://www.radiokeneally.com before the end of October.

In fact, now that I'm off the road for a little bit, I should be coming up with a lot more new RadioKeneally content, including more recent live tracks and another batch of insane promos, within the next few weeks.  Thank you for the great response to the site.  I'm also in hot-to-trot writing mode right now and will probably be writing a lot of the next MKB album over the next couple of months.

I've written a very brief essay about politics and energy, an idea which I know is not thrilling to some of you, so I've opted not to force it upon you in this Keneallist missive, but rather to simply to inform you of its existence.  If you are interested in my opinions about the current presidential campaign, no one can stop you from clicking this link: http://www.keneally.com/mkopinion01.html

Still available!  “Dog” signed, numbered special edition featuring DVD!  And “The Universe Will Provide” with exclusive second album “Parallel Universe”!  Only available at http://www.moosemart.com!  And I hear it's the holiday season!

If you haven't been listening to a lot of Jeff Buckley lately, listen to more Jeff Buckley, and don't forget those frequent walks.  And “America - The Book” from the Daily Show writers made me laugh hard at least 150 times.  And, and, Mr. Show's fourth season on DVD!  Yay!

Enough rambling!  Let's paint a house!

MIKE KENEALLY: THE NEW RELEASES

  • keneally - metropole orkest: the universe will provide
(2004, cd, usa, favored nations fn2400-2)

    • Those of you who have lost track of Mike Keneally for one reason or another, should be aware that "The Universe Will Provide" is an excellent album.
It has Mike Keneally and the fabulous Metropole Orkest performing a suite that Keneally wrote especially for the orchestra. And it's great.
Released on Favored Nations (!!), this album should get the attention that it deserves.
Congrats to NPS as well, for their continuing exciting projects.

  • keneally - metropole orkest: parallel universe
(2004, cd, usa, exowas recordings ex2407-1)

    • Exowax, Mike Keneally's label, put out a companion CD to "The Universe Will Provide". A great idea, resulting in an interesting and funny release.
It sure has been a busy year for Keneally fans, but as long as he makes records like these, you won't hear any fans complaining.

ZAPPAWEEN X

Jerry Outlaw (Bogus Pomp) on Zappaween X:

Hey everybody,

I know lots of people are unhappy about the cancellation of Zappaween 10.

I can assure you that nobody is as unhappy about it as I am.  Things just came together in a completely rotten way to make Zappaween impossible this year.  Obviously, four major hurricanes in six weeks didn't help things.

Many of us were without power at different points and some for a week or more.  These hurricanes have caused serious changes in everyone's plans and schedules.

I had serious discussions with Alex,Rick, and John about the amount of rehearsal time we would have leading up to Zappaween.  Things were stacked against us in many ways concerning everyone's individual schedules.  At first we decided to go ahead with it and try to squeeze in a couple of rehearsals before Zappaween and make it happen.  We knew it would be very hard and we also knew that we wouldn't really be at 100% as a band by Zappaween because of such limited time to get together.  Still we said, let's do it.  Performing when we are not as rehearsed as we should be is risky but we have been in that situation before and been ok.  We were deciding the setlist and looking at two days in october to get with John for
full-band rehearsals.  Then it happened,...

The idiots at the state theater called and said they double booked the date with another band.

Even though we booked that date a year ago,.. a fucking YEAR AGO, they still refused to even consider moving the other band to a different date.  I was really surprised that they wouldn't even consider moving the other band, especially since we would put at least 500 people in there and probably sell most of their beer out.  These guys (Tony and Dave) have shown that they couldn't care less about an institution that has filled their smelly little theater to capacity many times and certainly made them lots of money.  Dave is particularly to blame.  He could have prevented this situation from happening months ago by simply calling me.  He is an idiot of the highest degree and everyone should tell him so.  His phone number is  727-804-5341 for anyone who would like to express their distaste to him for letting this very very stupid thing happen.

Doing Zappaween on a different date is not an option so, unfortunately we must cancel due to many contributing factors... the destructive power of four hurricanes, the abrupt changing of everyone's schedules, very limited rehearsal time and finally the biggest reason for Zappaween not happening this year,... COMPLETE STUPIDITY on the part of Tony and Dave from the state theater.  Especially Dave Hundley.   I can only offer my most sincere apology to everyone who was expecting the good time that Zappaween has been for nine years in a row.  We are very sorry to cancel Zappaween 10 and we hope to make it up to everyone in the near future.  Needless to say, we will never play the state theater again.  OK, there it is.... my explaination of why things led up to the cancellation of Zappaween this year.  Once again, I am SO sorry about this.  My heart is crushed over it and we will make it up to everyone somehow.  I promise.  Don't give up on us because we are not
done yet.

very sincerely,

-- Jerry Outlaw

The Keneally/Metropole Orkest album "The Universe Will Provide" that I did the orchestrations for (along with Keneally) has been getting rave reviews!  The latest is a review in Guitar Player magazine that you can find at www.guitarplayer.com by searching for "Keneally."

Anyway, Co de Kloet and our friends at NPS Radio Holland will be running a special on The Universe Will Provide this Monday, Oct. 11th starting at 2:00 PST (5:00 EST) that you can listen to at www.4fm.nl.  The Oppy special is on October 22nd, but I will send you another reminder before then.

* 2
The next concert with Special Opps is going to be rather, well, special.  It's going to be @ Level One in Los Angeles and it is going to feature opening sets by Andre LaFosse, Jen Kuhn's band Triple Helix, Kelda (on whose record I just played), and then Special Opps will be presenting a piece called "A Very Space Opera" as a Halloween special.  I'm still working out all the details, but please mark Tuesday, October 26th on your calendar.  This will be my last Level One show as a booking agent, because I tried it and realized that it's really not for me.

FAKE ZAPPA POSTAGE STAMPS

The picture below shows some fake postage stamps. Fake, because they weren't issued by a real country but prbably by some clever salesman. They're said to be issued in 2002 by a country called Udmartia.
My dad, who is a postage stamp collector, laughed out loud when I showed him this picture. I still think they look nice, though, so I'll paste the picture right here in UM somewhere...

And just to show you how clever this scam is, you can find some pictures below of some of the so-called FDC's. That's First Day Covers, released and stamped on the date of issue...
Remember, they're all fake...

The Prime-Time Sublime Community Orchestra is working on a new record to be called “Songs That Will Never Win A Grammy”.  It will be mostly pop songs, subverted beyond the commercial realm, sung by computers with orchestral accompaniment.

NEW RELEASES BY THE RESIDENTS

A message from our Resifriends at Ralphamerica:

Hello faithful one,
here's the latest from the Ralph Council...lots of goodies to report...

I MURDERED MOMMY, the soundtrack to the abandoned CD Rom project of 1997 is now a limited edition Ralph release. Packaged with a long long booklet, containing the original Cryptic notes on the project, this is limited to 1000 numbered copies and comes in a DVD sized digipak with slipcase. The music has not appeared elsewhere...

THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM DVD/CD (hardbound edition), the first releases by MUTE are both fantastic. You get 54 one minute movies on the DVD, along with the "maze" interface and some hidden goodies. It has been remixed for 5.1 surround, and there are filmmaker contributions from across the globe. The CD is a special 25th anniversary edition bound in a hardcover. Quite deluxe.

JOE'S DOMAGE

  • frank zappa: joe's domage (73)
        (2004, cd, usa, vaultarnative records)

    • Finally. I was getting desperate. My paranoia was running wild: Is someone at customs starting a Zappa collection? Does my mailman have anything against me? Is the box that mentions "these are for belgium" stashed away in a corner at the ZFT?
But no, here it is, in all its glory, "Joe's Domage". A rehearsal where the band learns pieces like 'New Brown Clouds' or 'One Shot Deal'.  I like these sort of things.
Of course, there's always the chance that these sort of documentaries wear out sooner than a 'real' album, but what the heck. This is absolutely great. A must have for any Zappa fan.
(Ive, I'll bring your copy along on Thursday.)

October 11, 2004
I managed to get my counter back on-line... at least, I think so...
And there's a couple of new bootleg DVDs around:

FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEG DVD

  • frank zappa: barcelona the hard way
        (2004, dvd-bootleg, ??, room entertainment room 101065)

    • The 1988/05/17 concert at the 'Palacio Deportes' in Barcelona, Spain got broadcasted on Spanish television at the time.
I had a DVDR copy of this show lying around (from a second or third generation VHS tape), and I have to say that this one looks better.

An excellent 1988 show, in good quality.
  • frank zappa: we don't mess around plus video from hell
        (2004, dvd-bootleg, ??, room entertainment room 101066)

    • Again, the recording quality of this bootleg DVD is better than what I've seen circulating on DVDR lately.
This disc includes the famous "We Don't Mess Around" show (1978/09/08 concert 'circus krone', munich, germany), from a german televion broadcast (ref: the "At The Circus" bootleg),
and part 2 is the "Video From Hell".

October 10, 2004
Welcome to another newsletter. Lots of things are happening, so keep your eyes and ears out, and make sure to keep me posted...
Talk again to you tomorrow.
Same time, same place.

STEFANO BOLLANI

  • stefano bollani: småt småt
(2003, cd, france, label blue llc 6665)

    • The last year, Stefano Bollani's name has popped up in various raving jazz concert reviews. "Småt Småt", his first solo album caught my attention because it includes Frank Zappa's 'Let's Move To Cleveland'.
Listening to "Småt Småt" left me with some mixed feelings. The biggest part of the album is absolutely great, but I could have done without the vocal parts on some of the songs.
'Let's Move To Cleveland", for me, is the highlight of the album. Solo piano, powerful playing and a very fine but way too short improvisation (the entire track is only 3:46 min long...).

However, as the distributor of Label Blue is in problems, this album is not the easiest one to find...

GARY LUCAS

  • gary lucas: operators are standing by
(2003, cd, usa, knitting factory kfw316-2)

    • "Operaters Are Standing By" is subtitled "The Essential Gary Lucas 1988 - 1996) and is in fact a compilation album. A very good one, as it shows the various aspects of Gary Lucas.
Zappa fans should know that it also includes 'King Strong', Lucas's toying around with Zappa's 'King Kong'.

  • gary lucas & jozef van wissem: the universe of absence
        (2004, cd, nl, bvhaast 0105)

    • I saw Gary Lucas and Jozef van Wissem in concert the other day, in Tilburg, NL. Well, it did not include van Wissem all the way through 'cause he had to catch a train (yes, a train to get back to Amsterdam), but it was a very fine concert.
"The Universe Of Absence" in the second Lucas / van Wissem album, also on the BVHaast label. Van Wissem on lute and Lucas on his dobro (with occasional slide). "The Universe Of Absence" is a very enjoyable album. Varied and very well balanced, both instruments adding to the sound.
      Simply great.

CAPTAIN KLAUSI

  • captain klausi: my guitar wants to kill your mama
        (1998, cdr, ger, private release)

    • I have never heard of Captain Klausi, and as the album does not include too many liner notes, I can't tell you all to much about this band. "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" is from 1998, and is an all Zappa album.
      Straight-forward Zappa.
      Fun.

FIREWORKS

  • fireworks: first tracks
        (2001, cd, usa, fw012001)

    • Fireworks recorded Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page No.2' on their debut album, "First Tracks".
      Brian Coughlin ( Fireworks director)says:
"Zappa is one of my most significant inspirations and models for Fireworks and we love his music!  Fireworks plays the B. P. #2 very often in our concerts and it is one of our favorite encore pieces.  We have also played the Black Page #1 and the drum solo version, King Kong, and we have rehearsed but never performed Peaches en Regalia and Brown Shoes Don't Make It.  The versions of King Kong and Brown shoes were my arrangements. (...) One of these days we want to put together a big project of Zappa's music."

"First Tracks" is a superb album.

  • fireworks: the rite of spring
        (2003, cd, usa, fw002)

    • Contrary to their first album, this one has one big opus on it: Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring". This is an extraordinary album. The piece is a classic one, and the performance is just brilliant. Played by an octet, featuring flute, bass, electric guitar, keyboards, percussion, violin, cello and clarinet, this is a fabulous piece of music.
I can only give you one advice: play it at night; preferably in the dark; make sure that you play it loud enough and don't let anyone else bother you.

      Essential listening !!

LAGQ

  • lagq: lagq's guitar heroes
        (2004, cd, usa, telarc cd-80598)

    • The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) recorded a Frank Zappa tribute on their "LAGQ's Guitar Heroes" album. The composition is called "Frank Zappa - Let's Be Frank" and was written by Bryan Johanson.
Other 'heroes' that are included on this album are John McLaughlin, Jimi Hendrix, Pat Metheny, Michael Hedges, Chet Atkins, ...
I enjoyed listening to the album, but it's not the kind of album that makes me go wild.

THE FOURFATHERS

  • the fourfathers: dust
        (2003, cdr, uk, private release)

    •  2003 saw the release of "Dust", another very fine Fourfathers album. The very first seconds of the album make it very clear: the Fourfathers are into Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band: a pulsating rhythm, a saxophone player who goes for the 'free' approach, a growling voice and some typical Magic guitar work. My cup of tea.
'Like An Angel' has Gillian Thrilling on guest-vocals. It's fascinating how another lead vocal colours this song in an all different way. My thoughts jumped to Pere Ubu and Talking Heads immediately. Excellent stuff.
"Dust" also includes a couple of Van Vliet originals: 'I'm Gonna Booglarise Ya, Baby' and (not mentioned on the cover, but part of the bonus tracks) 'Making Love To A Vampire With A Monkey On My Knee'.
      Excellent !!

  • the fourfathers: jam with rockette morton
        (2004, cdr, uk, private release)

    • July 11, 2004, The Fourfathers jammed with Mark Boston, better known as Rockette Morton from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
Benjamin Horrendous, the Fourfathers bass player had been in contact with Rockette Morton for a while and had arranged a meeting after the Magic Band's summer 2004 UK tour. The result can be heard on this very impressive album. "Jam" is not an easy album. My favorite tracks are the vocal ones: 'The Squirrel & the Shrew' (a song that the Fourfathers have played before), and 'Flat Face Blues' (a blues standard). 'New Shoes' comes in close, as it has some great interplay between the saxophone and the guitar.

This is a must-have for any experimental music / Beefheart / Magic Band fan.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

  • captain beefheart: : classic interviews
(2004, cd, uk, chrome dreams cis 2009)

    • Only recently, Chrome Dreams released a very fine Frank Zappa interview. Brand-new in this series, is the Captain Beefheart interview by journalist Steven Rosen, dated somewhere around the mid 70s.
Despite the quality of the recording (a lot of noise from the old tapes), this is quite an interesting interview. Don actually gives his view upon a lot of things: his influences, music that he likes, Zappa, the various Magic Bands, the spanish language and much more.

      Very interesting.
