ELVIS SCHOENBERG * ELVIS SCHOENBERG * ELVIS SCHOENBERG * ELVIS SCHOENBERG

  • elvis schoenberg's orchestre surréal: it's alive
(2003, cd, usa, allegro non troppo records es-1002)
    • Remember that I talked about Elvis Schoenberg and his Orchestre Surréal in the previous big nOte newsletter? "It's Alive" is his latest and brand-new album.
The booklet says "or is it Howlin' Charles Ives? Ludwig Von Ellington? Or Thelonious Verdi?... The thrill of listening to two radiostations at once..."
As I said last time, you're not prepared for this. Elvis Schoenberg's Orchestre Surréal continues in its theatrical madness. They take one or two compositions, ripp them both out of context and mix them together. Big fun & a joy to listen to.
It's pretty obvious that Elvis Schoenberg's alter ego is a Zappa fan. We can only hope that he will do a complete Zappa album one day. In the meantime, we're glad to have "It's Alive".

THE SPOILERS * THE SPOILERS * THE SPOILERS * THE SPOILERS * THE SPOILERS

The "Surf Instrumental cover versions of tunes by Frank Zappa" project
more info at: http://homepages.stayfree.co.uk/cordelia/Pages/Zappa%20Surf.htm

I asked all of the Zappa Surf album contributors the same couple of questions.
Thanks to Kirill Turitsin from The Spoilers, I can tell you the following:

The Spoilers play instrumental surf music. They don't consider themselves 'surf kind of guys', because "it's really funny to be a 'surf-kind of man' in the midle of Russia, where there is no ocean".

They have never been to California, but they do think that it's a cool place. Maybe even one of the coolest places in the world.

The Spoilers have contributed to several Russian & European compilations, but have no full lengh album out as of yet.

They don’t play other Zappa compositions either. Just the "Theme from Lumpy Gravy", that they recorded especially for the Zappa Surf project. Kirill said that before the Zappa Surf project, he had hardly heard any Zappa tracks at all. When he found out about the project through the Cawabunga mailing list, he listened to about 20 Zappa albums and picked 'Theme from Lumpy Gravy".

Kirill's message to the world: "Stay reverb!"

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART * CAPTAIN BEEFHEART * CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

  • various artists: where we live
        (2003, cd, eu, capitol / emi 724359318424)
    • The album cover says:
Stand for what you stand on
      Where we live
A campaign for the universal right to clean air & clean water
      A benefit cd for earthjustice

It's an okay album and it's for a good cause. But I'm mentioning it, because it features the one and only Don Van Vliet. Yes, you read it right. Captain Beefheart contributed to this album. And, no, he did not give the permission to use some of his work, but he recorded something new especially for this album: 'Happy Earthday' (sung to 'Happy Birthday). It's only some thirty seconds long but it's hilarious.
      A must have!

Thanks for the info, Zjakki.

MARK BOSTON AKA ROCKETTE MORTON

  • rockette morton: love space
        (2003, cd, usa, bs8981)
    • from the "Love Space" liner notes:

"Rockette's career started big when he was hired by Don Van Vliet to play bass in the revolutionary Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. Rockette and Beefheart guitarist Zoot Horn Rollo parted with the band in 1974 and formed their own band named Mallard. They released two recordings, and toured England and Germany. When the band broke up, Rockette began a long period of working from gig to gig.
One of these jobs was playing wit country music recording artist Leon Everette of South Carolina. The Everette connection led Rockette to his first visit to Aiken, South Carolina, where he co-owns and operates Bomark Studios.
In 2003 Rockette was invited to participate in a reunion of the Magic Band. Four authentic members of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band (though from different years) united..."

Also in 2003, Rockette made his first solo album, "Love Space" on which Zoot Horn Rollo guests on one track.

No traces of Beefheart or Mallard, but it's a nice album. Rockette Morton describes it as "feel good music".

ZAPPAWEEN IX * ZAPPAWEEN IX * ZAPPAWEEN IX * ZAPPAWEEN IX * ZAPPAWEEN IX

Fred Hemmer says:

The Ninth Annual Zappaween festival is happening at the State Theatre in downtown St. Petersburg on Saturday, November 1st.   Bogus Pomp will once again burgeon forth with over three hours of the best damn music you could ever hope to hear a band perform live.   Electric violin and guitar virtuoso, Dan Campbell will be joining Jerry and the guys once again to bring a level of musical excellence (combined with freewheeling buffoonery) to Tampa Bay that only happens once a year.   As always, Jerry will give the best dressed freak one of his very own electric guitars.   A particularly cool high point of this years Zappaween performance will be during the second set, as Bogus Pomp will perform the HOT RATS album in it's entirety.   Expect Dan to really be smokin' the violin on this stuff.  As always, video and audio recording is welcomed and encouraged.   Anyone recording audio should bring your own microphones because board access is not always available.

Every time we do Zappaween at the State Theatre, it's a NONSMOKING show.

Jerry and the band really do appreciate everyone that respects this request.

Tickets are $15.  Doors are at 8 pm, show is around 9pm or so.   Bogus Pomp has become an institution of musical excellence over the last decade and this 9th year in a row further establishes Zappaween as a St.Petersburg tradition.   Bogus Pomp wants to sincerely thank everyone who has supported the band in our effort to keep this incredible music alive.   See you there!!!!
