die beistelltische: kill ugly radio (2003, cd, ger, private release) here's a brandnew album by die beistelltische, german a capella group that performs strictly zappa. this is their second album and contains, besides a fair bunch of studio recorded material, also a splendid live version of 'billy the mountain'. my favourite track, however, is 'the idiot bastard son'. gregorian-like chanting included. beautiful. essential stuff !!
juan de la cruz band: up in arms (2003, cd, ger, normal records-shadoks music 013) originally released in 1972 (!!) in the fillipines, this album has now been rereleased on cd in germany. it includes juan de la cruz's performance of frank zappa's 'mystery roach'. i like it. i like the entire album, as a matter of fact.
the plastic people of the universe: 1969 - 2001 (2002, 15cd-box, cz, globus) i don't know if this is an official release. globus does mention it on their website, but the story i got was that only 50 boxes were made - by a shop-owner and out of an overstock of osbourne boxes - and this in an attempt to boost sales. besides all that, the plastic people of the universe deserve a place in everyone's record collection. they are a very fine czech underground band. one of the discs in this box-set is called "trouble every day" (picture on the right), and includes a coverversion of the very same track. as you know, originally written by frank zappa.
hasidic new wave: kabalogy (1999, cd, usa, knitting factory records kfr-239) this one's a bit older. the hasidic new wave band is a joint effort of frank london and greg wall. they play some very jazzy stuff, spiced up with a lot of jiddish influences. one of the tracks on this album is called 'the frank zappa memorial bris'. don't ask me why. it's a nice track, but i don't find any zappa in it.

Jambangle is a belgian jazz band. they were asked to do something with zappa's music and ended up doing something with zappa, james bond themes and own compositions.

Three concerts have been scheduled. all in belgium. I don't think i can attend all three, but i'll try. See you there?

doctor dark is preparing to leave for bad doberan, germany. they still have one gig scheduled in providence, so if you're from the neighbourhood, try to catch them. sunday 2003/07/13 concert 'as220', providence, ri, usa i was also fortunate enough to get a copy of their 2003/06/06 gig at the 'station 68' in new london, ct, usa, and i have to admit that they sure sound like they will astonish quite a bunch of people in bad doberan. the set-list included a.o. 'ice cream for crow', 'sun zoom spark', 'i'm gonna booglarize you baby', 'the past sure is tense', 'bat chain pullar', 'moonlight on vermont' and 'electricity'.
