- whatchamacallit: demo
(2002, cdr, bel, demo)
belgian sextet whatchamacallit (vibes / marimba, guitar, sax,
keys, bass & drums) plays the music of frank zappa. all members
of whatchamacallit have been classically trained, and this
shows. they don't hesitate to take on the more 'difficult' zappa
pieces. (check out their concert play-list).
this demo includes: 'the black page', 'rdnzl', 'peaches' and 'cruising for
burgers'.
pieter claus (vibes & marimba, & the one behind it all) said
that the same session also included 'i'm the slime', but that it didn't make
the demo.
anyway, the pieces that did make the demo sound really great. all the tracks
show this laid-back, jazzy feeling. fine, controlled playing and
including some impressive solos as well.
i like it a lot. - check them out !! try to see them in concert - or even
better: schedule them in your festival or broadcast !!

- the
grandmothers: the eternal question
(2002, cd, ger, inkanish ir0002)
- feat. various ex-moi;
incl.zappa compositions
if i'm not mistaken, i told you about these discs about a month ago.
technically speaking, these two albums are re-releases. initially,
they were both issued as cdrs by jimmy carl black in 2001. this
time, both albums were issued on factory pressed silver discs.
- captain beefheart and the magic band: dust sucker
(2002, cd, uk, milksafe bf6003)
"dust sucker" presents demos for the never released "bat
chain pullar" album. the magic band on this album is: denny
walley, jeff morris tepper, john thomas and john french. i hadn't
heard these before, so (despite the little hiss) i enjoyed listening to
them. that's the first 12 tracks. the next 7 are live recordings
(and one studio cut) from various sources. nice stuff, sure, but i
don't understand why they had to add these seven tracks. it's always
nice to listen to some extra material, but the first twelve tracks would
have made a very nice album on its own.
milksafe (ozit/morpheus) has its own website, so i asked them about the
legal aspects. to put it mildly, not everyone is convinced that this
is an 'official' release... haven't heard from them (yet).
* * * i didn't get to see "corrie
en de blazers" (corrie van binsbergen + nederlands blazers ensemble) in
concert. let's hope they recorded it and will broadcast or release it. * *
* there's a lot of new zappa bootlegs coming the next couple of months * * * die
beistelltische will play at the upcoming zappanale festival - confirmed by
the band itself * * * so will the nasal retentive orchestra - also confirmed * *
* the april issue of mojo carried the bono/beefheart telephone conversation that
was previously published in oor magazine. * * * the spring 2002 issue of mojo
collections, has 6 pages (with nice pics) on frank zappa and the mothers * * *
